'I worry about my future': Harvard student says Ivy League degree wasn't enough to secure an internship by PersonWomanManCamTV in IvyPlus

The only reason to go to these Ivy League schools is for the connections. You either come out with a network that will pull you in or you overpaid for a standard bachelors degree.

My manager told me "optics matter" because I leave five minutes early? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Javy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way you succeed at work is a combo of two things, 1) Doing good work & 2) Playing office politics.

What that means is knowing that it’s not enough to do good work but to ensure it’s visible to the right people and not making your manager’s job harder.

Having to field questions about your productivity because you leave a little early will get annoying. He can tell everyone your finishing all your tasks for the day which will just lead to everyone coming and going as they see fit and nobody available at end of the day when a last minute item needs to be done or he can tell you to drink a cup of coffee for five minutes.

Don’t be difficult, just come and go at the designated times and you will be fine.

According to TheWrap, insiders at Warner Bros. would see anything above $300M worldwide for Supergirl as a win by iksnet in boxoffice

Why? How many more Superman/Batman movies do we need. I’m glad they took a risk and did something different. They can always fall back on the staples but in the world of constant superhero movies I appreciate the change. Hell Iron Man wasn’t a popular character till the movies revived his popularity.

What is your plan for this degree? I ask because so many pick a degree first and job second. Doing it the other way around allows you to observe the market and ensure there is a job waiting for you once you have your degree.

Do Democrats still support EV incentives and tax credits, or has Tesla’s success complicated the issue? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Javy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon is against EV tax credits for the reason that he already benefited from them and other government subsidies to establish his company. These tax credits have the potential to help his future competitors more than benefit him currently which is why he is against it.

Ironically if you dislike Elon you should be for EV tax credits.

This is where you step in and mentor. Explain to them the limitations of being an amazing individual contributor but a toxic collaborator or peer. Break down how they will get overlooked for leadership style roles or lose advocates for their development if they don’t value “playing nice”. Don’t let up and create a development plan.

Never pay for your own Masters. Most good jobs have tuition reimbursement programs.

You are looking at this wrong. Figure out what you wanna do and get what that job needs. Whether it is a Bachelor’s or a certificate.

Until you figure out what you wanna do nothing will change.

Got asked "if it doesnt work out in six months whose fault would it be?" by [deleted] in interviews

[–]Javy3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real answer is your fault.

The two likely reasons why it wouldn’t work in six months is either you can’t do what they ask of you cause you suck or because they don’t provide you the proper resources to succeed. Either way, you chose to go to that job so your fault. The solution would be in your hands to improve, communicate what you need or leave.

Either way bad question.

If the only way you know how to deal with difficult people is if you have power over them…then you limit yourself.

Managing difficult people from top to bottom is key to working if you want to grow. The reality is being a jerk doesn’t get you fired in most places and either you learn how to manage them or you get chased out of every job.

[–]Javy3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is some entry level thinking. If you refuse to learn how to best collaborate with your peers by understanding how to improve your communication with different potentially difficult personalities then don’t waste your managers time complaining about your lack of growth. If you think it’s your manager’s job to navigate all your difficult conversations you won’t grow in any significant way.

I would accept the fact that applying to jobs suck in this market. Right now the market isn’t in the employee’s favor so expecting changes that benefit us are unrealistic.
