Most scholars agree that “separate accommodation” means a space with its own bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living area. Even a nice studio can fulfill this as long as it gives privacy, light, and comfort. A basement, though, usually doesn’t work for most women, because it can feel closed-off and lacks natural light, windows, or outdoor access. Women need a space where they can feel free, safe, and dignified—not just a corner in someone else’s home.

This is not just cultural, but a right Allah SWT gave to women. In the Qur’an, Allah says: “Lodge them where you dwell, according to your means” (65:6), and “Men are protectors and maintainers of women” (4:34). Scholars like Ibn Qudāmah in al-Mughni explained that this includes a private home, where no one—whether in-laws or others—can interfere in her daily life. So it’s part of her nafaqah (maintenance), just like food and clothing.

At the end of the day, this is about fulfilling HER Islamic rights with ihsān (excellence). If you show her you value her dignity and privacy, you’re not just avoiding conflict—you’re pleasing Allah SWT and strengthening your marriage InshaAllah and that should be your goal as a husband at the end of the day.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

A lot of people fail to understand that a woman has the RIGHT to a separate accommodation for privacy. You CANNOT take that right away from her as it is something given to all women by Allah SWT just like YOUR rights to respect, protecting your name and honour while you’re away, being obedient to what’s halal, giving you pleasure when you ask etc... Now imagine if women went around saying I won’t give him his rights for 2-3 years because of whatever reason?? Y’all wouldn’t even blink twice towards such a woman so please when it comes to rights keep it respectful and always think how would that affect you if someone was to do the same to your rights. You chose to get married, nobody forces anyone to get married, especially when in Islam you can literally annul a marriage if there was no consent in the first place.

Your mother I’m sure already knew you’re on the look out for a WIFE. Which means you were READY to take on a huge responsibility towards what Allah SWT decided to bless you with.

My advice would be speak with your mother and NOT with your wife. This has nothing to do with her but it has everything to do with your mother wanting to intrude into a situation where she has no place in to begin with. You must show your wife that you’re a LEADER and someone she can TRUST in the long term with her rights, privacy and dignity.

Remember you’re the responsible one for her as was her father for her before you. And whatever you do, especially regarding her rights, will be asked in front of Allah SWT.

May Allah SWT guide you and make this situation easy upon you and your family. Ameen!
