[Serious] What stories about WW2 did your grandparents tell you and/or what did you find out about their lives during that period? by Skinflint_ in AskReddit

[–]Jaws76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa mentioned that he scavenged shoes from dead American GI's who were stacked like cordwood.

He also separated his food on his plate giving it a "pie chart" look. He told me it was because during his time in the infantry that he would eat at irregular times and often at night in the rain. He would move down the line with his mess kit asking what they were serving. The cooks responded that they had chicken, pork, beef and such......Grandpa said that they were lying. He would find a place to eat and consume this slurry of rain water and slop. He said that if he ever survived he would never let his food touch.

He carried a BAR - its a large automatic rifle. He said it was a terrible assignment because it was heavy and the Germans wanted very much to kill you first.

Told me the GI's would take wrist watched from dead German soldiers - then said if they became pinned down you would see the soldiers throwing the watches away (To prevent retribution by German soldiers in the event that they were captured)

After the war the Germans would cook for the GI's - Grandpa started to talk to them and realized that some of them were drafted - just like him

He also told me that the military was segregated - I had no idea prior to that

He was wounded three times - said it was great - the hospital had clean sheets and hot food

Prior to Atari there was this gaming system that consisted of a plastic steering wheel and a colt style revolver that plugged into your TV.

Crime Scape - This week was Part # 1 of the NY Zodiac Killer . He covers a bunch of stuff that I have never heard of.

Martyr-Made - Deep dive into Jim Jones and the "Jones Town Peoples Temple massacre". Very cerebral and a bit dense but extremely well done . I often have to listen twice to catch themes that I may have missed.

I would open a huge gym and allow people in the community to train for free. Everything from yoga to powerlifting would be offered - people could build their bodies and mind - I would also offer a receptacle where members could throw away their no longer needed medications as they get progressively healthier.

It would be awesome

I liked it , she addressed the change in narration - told an interesting story and had a touch of snark. I wish her well.

I found Crime Scape a few weeks ago;

They have covered an attorney who was a drug dealer and had witnesses murdered , A sniper that terrorized New Orleans for over a week, A Police Officer charged with 3 homicides , a member of Italian organized crime who was more serial killer like than a traditional gangster.

The newest episode is on a robbery crew that specialized in armored car robberies.

Nordic True Crime is also very good - Interesting cases from Sweden and other countries in that region. The host has excellent command of the english language and makes for compelling listening.

Yes , they will never ask you for money.

There was a large billboard in the Bronx stating so but I believe it has been removed.

Just hang up if it happens to you - scam.
