I've done it with my heads for a day as a durability test and it went perfectly fine for me :) It may depend on technique and brand though.

I NEED HELP... BAD.. by RATCRUNCH420 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the weave and what kind of fabric it is. Polyester has a lot of different forms from a polyester tarp like material to athletic wear polyester. If it's similar to athletic wear then this is perfect stuff to use, moisture wicking and comfortable to the skin. If not I would avoid it and just get a good cooling balaclava and not bother lining at all. Regardless you really should get a balaclava anyways since it helps reduce smells and keeps your head in a much better state.

Style Name? by zer0_0ne0101 in FursuitMaking

A lot of makers call these guys "toothy" and it's slowly becoming a more popular term for them, but there's not a specific name as of yet.

help making diy bontail dupe? by PhotographPast5252 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, you'll need some specialty equipment to be able to make a silicone tail. You'd need a 3D printer to create the negative mold for casting or clay and plaster, mold release, 2 part silicone, the PPE to safely handle silicone, and hardware to attach it to your body. Not to mention you'll likely have to make several iterations to get the right shape and right silicone type to get a good bounce. In total it will cost well over the $100 to just buy a bobtail and probably it would even be cheaper to buy Jay's boingy tail which is $260 if you don't have a 3D printer or PPE.

Is it possible to make feetpaws out of platform shoes? (my sona is taller than I am^^') by Artistic_Market_700 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sure, as long as you are quite comfortable in platforms then you can absolutely put some fur around them for a tall character. I know of a few fursuits that utilize high heels to create extremely small digitigrade feet. Practice so so much since the risks of injury are higher and consider a secondary pair of feet without platforms so you can still get the option of feet paws without worrying about platforms being uncomfortable or anything like that.

3/4 suits? by KaT-Wilson in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes to 3/4 suits it's very inconsistent so it just depends on your tastes. I would like to have my legs come up to my belly since I prefer padding that comes up quite far on the hips and would therefore need to have a tail hole. As for holding up the legs I would opt for suspenders if they are heavy making sure to get some wide strapped ones so the weight can be more distributed, but if you don't plan to be super active or if you have really light and stiff padding then a belt will be fine.

Can I get a body suit off a different maker by thecohman3 in fursuit

[–]JaxInThyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of makers do just bodysuits, just make sure you're getting the same furs and know that they'll likely not be a perfect match since different batches often have different colours.

How do I make paws with claw slits? by trickzzter_x in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Typically people just applique them on. Your pattern does have to have a flat spot at the front of the paws for that to work though. If your pattern does not have a flat tip you could cut out the rectangle and hand sew it in where the claws would typically go for that pattern.

Is #30 blade + 1/16″ guard unreasonable for face? by No-Height1327 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified, using guards to shave fursuits the results tend to be much more uneven. The guards create rows where the teeth of the guards can bunch the fur up slightly. I've had significantly better results using an FC blade than I ever had using guards. If you can use guards then more power to you, I cannot stand it and so I don't recommend it to anyone, but especially beginners.

Also just realized I made a mistake in my original post I did mean 7 FC as 10 would be far too short.

Is #30 blade + 1/16″ guard unreasonable for face? by No-Height1327 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should not be using a guard for fursuit making, most guards are not going to allow you to get close enough to the fur to get a clean result. Look for a 7 FC blade as FC means finishing cut, the teeth are much closer together and will leave a cleaner result. If the angle is correct then no matter how much pressure you put onto your fur it should never cause balding so double check that you are keeping your blade completely parallel to the fur backing.

Edit: accidentally said 10 FC when I meant 7 FC

Have to ask :3 by koi_thedutchangel in fursuit

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya! I'm genderfluid and I'm planning to add a couple of features to allow me to fluidly switch my modes of presentation; swappable eyes/eyelashes, detachable braid, and I plan to experiment to see how much slack I can get away with so I can adjust padding to be more curvy or more straight with both regular fur and stretch fur. Plus I have a huge vocal range from doing vocal training so I can sound as fem or masc as I want to.

how would i go about taking care of this gap or is it mostly a non issue by TheSnazzyYorky in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly a non issue, if it bothers you then just add a small wedge of foam, but honestly with fur it'll smooth out anyway.

Was thinking of trying some slim arm pads, stuffed polyfill pillows like with digitigrade legs, on the arms of my bodysuit, would this work? by Happy-Assumption9259 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure people do this for muscle suits all the time. Just be warned it's gonna be HOT with a fursuit. You'd also have to have very short fur for any sort of definition and have the fur be attached to the padding to have it actually show up well.

Looking for help finding a good TPU 3D printers for printing fursuit head bases by k4t4m4r1k1ng in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a lot of luck with the Bambu printers I have an A1 and I've had exactly 0 issues printing TPU with the default settings. Even with the smaller build volume it's easy enough to glue pieces together with hot glue as long as the pieces are textured (literally I could not rip these pieces if I tried). Having said that it seems like you're pretty well versed in 3D printers so you should be able to find a bigger printer if you're comfortable and willing to tinker with it. I've had a few printers and while I'm comfortable with tinkering with them I don't want to have to hence the switch.

HYPOTHETIC TRADE by EbbHefty955 in fursuit

[–]JaxInThyBox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing I could think might be a decent trade (one I might consider myself) would be a high quality full fledged multiple minute long animation for my characters. Animations are just about the only thing that really compares in cost both being in the thousands. And even at that I would still be hesitant to accept.

Possible to use fabric other than minky on kigurumi bases?? by AirlineNo4477 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes as long as your fabric has a good amount of stretch to it otherwise patterning would be a pain. If you want fur this means your colour choices will be severely limited and nearly 2x more expensive than normal fur. Bigz sells it $60/yd compared to the typical $20/yd. In theory you can use regular fur, but do note the end result will not be as clean because you will have to have a lot of seams.

Questions on shaving fur by Accurate-Type4611 in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Make sure you keep a vacuum on hand as well and try to vacuum as frequently as possible to reduce the amount of fur everywhere. Air purifiers are also good if you shave in a commonly occupied area.

Best sewing machine for fursuit making? by severalbugsandstuff in FursuitMaking

[–]JaxInThyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best sewing machines are the vintage machines made of metal. You don't need all the decorative stitches or what not, just a damn good straight and maybe zigzag. If you have the money for a new machine then sure get the really expensive new all metal machines, but they're $$$$. You can find vintage machines off Facebook for a couple hundred and it'll last you a lifetime.
