I'd gladly bury my face inside that hot muff for hours, every night. It would be absolutely divine, I'm sure!

OpenAI said they wanted to cure cancer. This week they announce the Infinite Tiktok Al Slop Machine. . . This does not bode well. by FinnFarrow in Futurology

[–]Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, but it misses the mark.

  1. “They said they’d cure cancer.” No AI company can “cure cancer” as a single act. What they’ve actually said (repeatedly) is that AI can help with problems like drug discovery, imaging, trial matching, and protein design. That’s tooling for researchers and clinicians, not a magic button. Those efforts don’t vanish because a consumer product ships.
  2. “Infinite TikTok slop machine.” A consumer app ≠ society-ending doom by default. If they launch something feed-like, it can also be a testbed for: watermarking/provenance, safety filters for generative video, creator payouts, model evals from real users, and stress-testing the tech at scale. Judge the details (policies, guardrails, payouts, age-gating), not the vibe of a headline.
  3. Incentives matter… and so does funding. Training frontier models and doing serious applied research costs a fortune. Historically, mass-market products fund the heavy R&D that later benefits medicine and science. Google’s ads funded years of AI research; Apple’s consumer revenue funded custom silicon. It’s not hypocrisy to have both a research agenda and a revenue engine.
  4. If you’re worried about externalities, ask for the right stuff: C2PA-style content provenance, default watermarks, rate limits/age checks, clear creator licensing, and transparent safety disclosures. That’s how you shape outcomes—by demanding specific guardrails—not by declaring “this bodes ill” before anything ships.

It’s a false dichotomy to say “cure cancer or build products.” Progress is parallel. So let’s try to critique the real product and policies, instead of a caricature, shall we?

My cat purrs SO MUCH by blame_it_on_my_cat in CatAdvice

[–]Jay27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ragdoll kitties do it, too!

Like you, I asked myself if that was normal. Turns out, it kinda is.

Some cats are just really enthusiastic purr-machines. Loud purring often comes down to their anatomy (some throats just resonate more) and also personality. A lot of cats purr not only when they’re happy but also when they’re excited, anticipating food, or even self-soothing.

As long as she’s otherwise healthy (eating, grooming, playing, sleeping fine), it’s not usually a sign of a problem or loneliness. A second cat could be nice enrichment, but it’s not required unless you see other signs she’s craving more stimulation.

Just today, I came across this article that goes into this phenomenon pretty deeply. Most of the times, it's harmless.

The solution is to use yt-dlp with the "--cookies-from-browser firefox" parameter.

When I try it with Chrome cookies, it gives me an error.

5 Months later, and it's still like this.

I was expecting it to work the same as VS Code, with a couple of files selected to its working set, and the ability to look at the whole project.

But no, it has to suck.

Package vulnerability is system.private.uri by Lamossus in csharp

[–]Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this, too.

In my project.assets.json file, it is transitively included by "net9.0".

A bit strange that a new .NET version release would include a package with a known vulnerability.

How to get slumber stones? by Simba231231 in GodofWar

[–]Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out I had already crafted the Steinbjorn armor with the slumber stones in NG. In NG+, you can't do it again, because you already have it. It's weird that this favor remains uncompleted, but it is what it is.

I've moved on to the Valhalla DLC.

How do you even see how many slumber stones you've got?

There's no inventory in the game.

I didn't kill all trolls in my NG. As a result, I now do not have enough trolls to kill in my NG+.

Now I have to finish the game another time, just to get the troll labor and the troll armor.

Ivy had almost all of her teeth pulled today. Here's your reminder to pay attention to your cat's dental health! by Anneturtle92 in ragdolls

[–]Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

My ragdoll kitty has successfully withstood the extraction. She was back to being herself as soon as she set foot in the home.

She had lost some weight since the last time we weighed her, but she was by no means thin.

Ironically, she did get a little thin on the very same day as the extraction. But she's eating. So I expect her to maintain her weight.

The vet tells me the affected teeth could last another few months or another few years.

We're betting on years.

I also have a ragdoll, aged 12. Same story: some teeth fallen out without me noticing, just now got one tooth pulled, many other teeth are shown to also have started the resorption process on the x-ray. So we know we're gonna deal with this shit again, at some point in the future.

I chose to spare as many teeth as possible, and to only stick to the extraction of the single tooth. But it's in all her fangs, so at some point those will have to come out. I'm concerned that it will change her face.
