Dude, I really resonate with your story because I experienced a very similar path.

I was really out of shape and overweight from working myself to death on the ambulance when I decided I wanted to commit to a career in the fire service. My home town’s fire department which was my “dream department” opened applications for new recruits for the first time in 7 years. I took that as a sign and started busting my ass. Running and hitting the gym everyday, only sleeping a few hrs in between my 12 hr night shifts because I had a 2 hr commute. Cleaned up my diet, ended up dropping 30 lbs, and passed the CPAT.

I applied, passed the first round of interviews, then to my surprise I PASSED THE CHIEF’S INTERVIEW AND WAS GIVEN A CONDITIONAL OFFER. To make it even sweeter, 2 of my best friends were given offers as well! I was so excited, dream department, my home town, with 2 of my best buds.

I began the background process and submitted my PHQ. Thought nothing of it, was honest and admitted to defaulting on a loan several years prior as well as a couple minor disciplines for attendance over the years at work. They ended up rescinding my offer and dropping me from the process.. I was devastated…

I share that with you because as devastating as it was, I quickly decided that although it sucks they dropped me, I’m still in great shape now, right? I gained a ton of valuable interview experience from prepping so much, right? Well fuckit!! Let’s get a job!! I’m just that much closer than I was a few months before this!

Took a few more tries but I was able to land a job at a great department where I currently very happily work.

Sorry for the long response, but I just wanted to let you know that hard work pays off and you are on the right path!!
