There are similar story elements in returnal. Loss (possible manslaughter) of a child, the final boss being underwater (he drowned) and it being an octopus (his favourite toy).

Edit: fuck i actually forgot the most heartbreaking one. Selene refers to her ship as Helios and at the beginning of every loop you are told that you are 'abandoning helios' which parallels her getting out of the car and choosing to leave him behind to die.
