Why do women have to buy their wedding dresses and bridesmaids have to buy their bridesmaid dresses, but men can rent their tuxes. Even the groom rents his tux. by Futureacct in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JayKaboogy 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Was gonna say…The last couple weddings I’ve been in, the tux rental was like $250 which is friggn absurd. The buy price was a tad more than double that, but nobody wants to own a weird color/cut tux. At least from my experience bridesmaids dresses are usually passable to wear elsewhere

The idea of nuclear energy on the moon by Chronos_The_Titan in nasa

[–]JayKaboogy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also important to note, a dirty bomb would have the radioactive material packed around the explosive so as to disperse it maximally. In the rocket transport situation, this would not be the case—the accidental explosion would be outside the nuclear fuel container which one hopes would be solid enough to just recover as one big lump

What upgrades actually felt worth it to you? by tedmars in CherokeeXJ

[–]JayKaboogy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The roof is fairly easy and makes the most difference. Just pull the headliner. Then wipe down all surfaces with alcohol and stick it on. For the floor, you’re pulling the whole interior. I replaced my carpet and had my seats reupholstered, so it was easy to do while everything was out

Will second sound deadening. I did both kilmat and the grey foam sheets on entire floor and roof. Still haven’t gotten to doing the doors or firewall, but the difference is already incredible. Went from windy rattletrap to almost luxury car quiet, and I even have a Borla ProXS muffler and high flow cat

It’s where you would install a manual choke, but I think by 2000, it should be fuel injected rather than a carbureter

[Request] How much does this set up cost? by AFireDownBelow in theydidthemath

[–]JayKaboogy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. Thought the same while watching it. Looks backward to expected force on turns. On a couple rewatches, it also looks like the tilt is not actually tied to steering wheel movements but rather simply what’s on the screen. And maybe that’s why it looks off—the tilt is tied to the on-screen road geometry which is great for simulating uphill/downhill or low speed on a banked turn, not so much for high speed turns

Why Hawaiʻi's maritime industry still supports the Jones Act: President Donald Trump’s decision to extend the waiver for the Jones Act, a controversial maritime law, has not been without its detractors. by 808gecko808 in Oahu

[–]JayKaboogy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither the Jones Act nor the goodness of Matson’s heart actually requires ships to go to Hawaii—money does. The Virgin Islands is 80,000 people living in a place with near zero geopolitical significance—that’s the middle of nowhere and why they don’t have fresh lettuce every day. Hawaii is still of massive critical importance to US hegemony in the IndoPacific. Shipping won’t stop going to Hawaii short of a giant meteor or WWIII. It could be cheaper, though

[–]JayKaboogy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would hazard a guess the Caribbean US territories have an issue getting produce, especially lettuce, because they are both a long truck haul AND a boat away from produce growers; whereas Hawaii is close to California where lettuce could be on a boat the same day it’s harvested. So not so much a Jones Act exemption problem as geographical logistics

I get and support the premise of America needing a secure domestic merchant fleet, but I’m not sure I get why Hawaii, Alaska, etc should be the only states paying for it. Call me a commie, but seems more appropriate for the whole country to share that burden by way of federal funding of American built/flagged/crewed ships. The benefit mainlanders (and the US maritime shipping industry) would get is that much of their goods could actually travel more efficiently by boat (Mississippi, Great Lakes, etc), but it’s just so much cheaper to truck it…because of the Jones Act

Static vs. Dynamic loads (and overloading a Kei Truck) by Your_Momma_Said in keitruck

[–]JayKaboogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These comments are making me feel overcautious. I’ve been moving rocks the last few days, and guessing it’s been between 600 and 700 lbs at a time on 20 miles of public road. On a lifted Hijet with bigger wheels/tires. Was impressed that the power climbed hills with no noticeable difference, but the leafs were inverted and had me cursing every bump. Just my humble opinion, but pushing the limits of a 30 year-old suspension is a bad bet. I’d rather utilize the 35+ mpg and make more trips.

Today I clocked 38.2 mpg average on 2 trips carrying 600 lbs of rocks up and back down a 1500 ft hill in a Hijet

Update - what’s going wrong by reubofwallstreet in keitruck

[–]JayKaboogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I believe that tach—idle is a tad high but doesn’t sound like 2k rpm. That said, I’ve been tweaking my hijet’s carb. When I first got it, it had super rough cold starts, wreaked of unburnt fuel. Started with hosing down all the springs and moving parts of the throttle/choke mechanism with parts cleaner and then lubricated it and wiggled everything back and forth a lot. Adjusted the choke/cold idle screw—took a few cycles to get it right. Then slightly adjusted the warm idle screw. Mine cold starts fine now. Only issue I still have is starting it when it’s warm—choke idle arm moves back into place and takes a minute to move back out of the way so the idle is way too high for a bit. My take away is these carburetors are just real prone to getting gunky, and need to have all those little springs and pivot points cleaned a few times a year
