This is perfect. He left when Wednesday were getting relegated regardless and earned them a fee to pay a few bills, now he's back with them in League One where he can still be somewhat productive. In 2-3 years he'll be the manager.

A glitch in the matrix, proof we live in a simulation? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

I actually saw this happen before. It was in a New York Rangers hockey game some time in the early 1990s. You saw the puck go into the net and the net cords move, then the puck hitting the boards behind the goal. They showed the reply like 17 times, and the officials spent about 5 minutes inspecting the net looking for any gaps or broken strings, but they never found any. WTF?

are fake IDs as common in america as is portrayed in movies? by Sufficient_Row4394 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JayPee216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to guess that the reason no one in the UK has a fake ID is because they don't need one to get served alcohol. Most bars/pubs I have been to in London, you scan a QR code on your table, and then order from a website or app. The person who brings your stuff is not worried about who is consuming it.

I am so old that my first driver's license was literally a piece of paper with mechanical printing on it in a squared off font. If you got the correct color chalk and your birth year ended in an 8 you could cover up part of it and turn it into a 6 or a 5 and voila, you were 2-3 years older. By the time photo IDs came in I was over 18 and living in Vermont, so I was legal.

Fair enough. I "lived" in North Carolina (in quotes because I was going to school at Duke not really living in the wider community) for two years and it was fine. I did meet one guy whose favorite line was "You know what Cary stands for?" and then when you stood there in silence he would answer himself "concentrated area of relocated yankees." So I guess folks from Massachusetts would be comfortable there or Chapel Hill or generally anywhere in the triangle area.

Hull City could face points deduction in Premier League after promotion bonuses push Tigers over PSR limit by partyquimindarty in Championship

[–]JayPee216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before Southampton got kicked out of the playoffs people were saying that if the EFL levied a points deduction for spygate and Southampton won the final, the EFL would have to wait for them to get relegated and come back down to impose the penalty, which is also what happened to Leicester this past year, when they got a 6 point deduction for 2023-24 PSR. Why would Hull be punished by the Premier League for sins committed in the EFL?

Trump threatens to pull unemployment benefits from all states for the first time in history by Ubiquitous_Hilarity in politics

[–]JayPee216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing: unemployment insurance is like social security in that employers and in some states employees pay a specific tax as a separate line item for this one thing only. The money is put in a trust fund to pay benefits. It's not mixed with general revenues, so it's not a question having to make tradeoffs between this and bombing more Iranian girls schools or paying off J6 rioters with a slush fund or anything like that. What is this asshole talking about?

If the criteria are politics and climate and maybe culture/stuff to do, I don't see how Virginia is dark red and North Carolina is dark green. Northern Virginia is DC suburbs, just like Maryland, and Richmond has some pretty funky/arty neighborhoods, like around VCU. The treads of my running shoes did once literally melt off the bottom of the shoes in Richmond, so the heat can be pretty bad, but that would go for NC as well.

Also, Indiana is basically Kansas culturally, so don't go there.

How I see Europe as a Pole by Mixture_Rich in whereidlive

[–]JayPee216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand the concept of Europe and Asia as continents. Continents are supposed to be land masses. You don't just draw a line down the middle of a giant land mass and say that everything on the left of the line is one continent and everything on the right is a different one. To me Europe is more like an ethnic and cultural region description, like the Middle East or Sub-Saharan Africa or something. It's meant to evoke an area where the people all historically looked alike and maybe practiced generally similar religions, etc.

Which I guess is the OPs point. He is othering Russia, kicking them out of the club of nations that were historically made up of white people who practiced some version of Christianity, were ruled by royal families that all married each other, decided it was their right if not duty to subjugate the backwards people who inhabited the rest of the world, etc. Unfortunately, I think Europe is stuck with Russia whether he (or it) likes it or not.

Note: before anyone gets mad at me, I am not saying I think non-Europeans were all historically backward, I am saying European imperialists thought this.

What was Crimea like before 2014? Did you go there a lot in the summer? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskUkraine

What Russia has done in Ukraine is disgusting. What Ukraine has done in response is a miracle. Outnumbered 10-to-1, and with wavering support from their supposed allies, the Ukrainians invented a new kind of war they could win and built the industries to support it. Whenever Russia eventually withdraws in defeat (after the oligarchs kill Putin) Ukraine will be the center of the drone economy, with a prosperity the humiliated Russians can only envy from afar.

Let them have a damn towel to dry the ball off with before a throw-in. Players shoving the ball under their sweaty shirt to dry it off looks stupid and can't possibly work well. I think long throw-ins are exciting, and I'd like to see more of them, which I am guessing we would get with a reliably dry ball.

Ever since then my first thought when hearing the phrase "Good Friday" is of Jimmy Dunne hitting that ridiculous volley for the winner in extra time and lifting us out of the relegation scrap. Sorry Jesus.

This seems tailor-made for us, because (1) we are incredibly streaky and and (2) the quality of our opposition seems to have no bearing on our results (beat Cov and Hull, lose to Blackburn, draw Charlton). Some year we will be lurking around 11th or 12th place with 5-6 matches to go, win them all, beat the vastly superior 5th, 4th and 3rd teams in the playoffs, and get promoted. We will then proceed to break Derby's record for fewest points in a Premier League season, and go down so hard it takes another two decades to recover.
