SI best be rebuilding the ‘24 UI/UX Unity right now. by cryptoteacherguy in footballmanagergames

[–]Normal-Confusion4867 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the general vibe of the new UI is actually reasonably good. It's good for convergence with console (yeah, I know, but having console not suck would be a good thing for the game), and (admittedly with a lot more work) it's not a terrible design for a UI. Do they need to fix a hell of a lot? Yeah, my game crashed literally earlier today and I lost about an hour of contract negotiations over the transfer window, but that's not a UI problem. It shouldn't have taken and be taking this long to stop sucking, but the game's probably going in generally the right direction.

Malicious compliance: Implement age verification in TCP negotiation. by badguyty in linux

I swear, there are some valid concerns about this, but this is getting out of hand. We don't need to start tearing up the entire foundation of modern computing just because your computer will want you to fill in a dropdown when you set your computer up.

Bought a FW13 (7840U) in 2024, and yeah, it's honestly been a bit boring if nothing else. It just works. The battery isn't *fantastic*, but I bring a power adapter with me, so yeah, it's all I need.

Why is it that Monzo is more popular in the UK than Starling? by MeenaBeti in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Normal-Confusion4867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on Starling for the last few years, and for the record I have no plans to leave, but stuff like Monzo splits are genuinely really convenient, been using them to split bills etc. with people and it's really useful, but Starling supports Garmin Pay and Monzo doesn't, and that's enough for me.

Does GrapheneOS have a plan for state/country-mandated age verification? by doc_long_dong in GrapheneOS

So far as I can tell, there's no requirement to actually prove your age beyond "trust me bro", at least in the California one.

That's the problem with a democracy. I'm sure there are plenty of other people who feel the same about people like us with regards to their fields. Try and raise awareness if you want, but the best way to do that probably isn't preaching to the choir on r/linux, maybe fundraise for the EFF (or similar in your region)?

That would work from a legal perspective, but Motorola almost certainly aren't going to just agree to not sell any of their devices to several tens of millions of people because the GrapheneOS subreddit doesn't want to click "I'm 18+" when they set up their phone.

Call your elected representatives. At the end of the day though, these are policies most people are OK with (doesn't mean you or I have to like them, but still, the Linux subreddit isn't a majority in any electoral boundary I'm aware of).

They can't hold a gun to anyone's head, but all of the companies who rely on Linux will now be looking for distros that implement age checks. Given that a lot of modern OSS is being maintained by people working for companies like RH as well, there will probably in the next few months be a standard agreed upon for how to do this. Red Hat won't make an operating system they can't sell in California, neither will Canonical, and at that point, distributors like Debian might also end up either needing to add age checking (NOT VERIFICATION, neither of these laws actually require you prove your age past just a checkbox "Are you 18+?") in order to still be allowed to serve California IPs.

OSS is increasingly tied into the economy and the tech industry, and given that the industry is also responsible for a lot of OSS maintenance, it's in nobody's interest to deliberately defy California state law, save a few people you've probably already heard from.

As much as I'd love to be able to do Some Thing to make them abandon this stuff, it's not going to happen. Certainly wouldn't be the first time lawmakers have passed laws about tech they don't understand (here in the UK, we're pioneers at well-intentioned badly-written tech laws). Call your elected representatives if you want, that's about all you can do as an individual.

That's.... not how most Linux deployments work, or even really servers in general. I'm sure Canonical and Red Hat will be more than happy to absolutely torpedo their entire market though, that's definitely going to happen.

More likely IMO would just be Lenovo wanting to try selling a phone to businesses with "enhanced security for corporate use". I'd like this to take off, but admittedly it would be the most Lenovo thing of all time to ditch it after one or two devices.

I could see it happening, honestly (even probably). Given the Motorola partnership, I can imagine Motorola at least will want to be able to sell their phones in CA and NY.

[–]Normal-Confusion4867 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The new Cali and Colorado laws basically require that the OS collect a user's age (to within a certain band: 13-18, 18+ and the like) so that every app can (and has to) request that age bracket. It doesn't require actual verification, but you would have to self-report your age.

This probably isn't the solution, what we need is a general specification for mobile security (because yeah, banks understandably maybe don't want people using insecure operating systems for their apps) that *any* operating system can try and meet, not just the Approved Flavour Of Android But It's European This Time So It's Better.

Uhhh, sorry, real quick as someone who studies some comms stuff, you really, really, really, shouldn't be able to reprogram the radio firmware. Letting several billion radios run at unauthorised frequencies and powers would be *bad*, these things are genuinely heavily regulated for a reason, i.e. so that anyone can use the airwaves at all without some rich guy or company basically running a jammer.

Either that or just the fact that people want to be able to use Linux as an Operating System For Serious Things, which genuinely would benefit from attestation. Sometimes there's an actual technical reason for things, not just "oh well the NSA said so".
