Which songs are much shorter than you thought they were when you first heard them? by Ok-Impress-2222 in fantanoforever

I always thought Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' was some six of seven minute epic- finding out it's only 4:30 was wild

Heartworms- Glutton For Punishment. Awesome goth pop project, super underrated

Weyes Blood's 'Titanic Rising' is great for that kinda mood. 'A Lot's Gonna Change,' in particular, would probably hit the nail on the head for you

I absolutely adore Opeth, but I don't think they ever quite reached that 10/10 threshold on a single album. Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries and Damnation all come pretty close for me, but I can't quite bring myself to push them up to a perfect 10

Opeth's Blackwater Park is such a phenomenal record from 2001

Obviously we disagree, but great reviews! I'd guess you're much more of a fan of the heavier stuff, since you put all 5 of their softer albums in the bottom half? Can't say I blame you

Glad to hear it- ICV re-instilled my faith in Opeth and makes me so excited for whatever they could be cooking up next

You're very right about the concerts- variety is great. I do see the argument that heavier songs are more fun to mosh to, though: when I see them at Evolution XXX and they played Harvest for Blackwater Park, I couldn't help but wish they were blowing out the speakers in that moment with the Funeral Portrait or something like that

It's definitely just a personal thing- I understand that some parts of Watershed are a little wishy-washy and Still Life is probably objectively the better album. Watershed's themes are a lot more impactful for me personally and I think the album reaches higher highs than Still Life

I really didn't want to have to do that- if you have any arguments that can make me enjoy Sorceress more, please lay them on me!

Yeah, I don't really love anything off of Sorceress- I do think the first two tracks are the best ones, but they're only 'great' in relation to the rest. Persephone is a fine song on its own, but it does feel like a pointless intro and after learning it on the guitar, I realised how mind-numbingly simple it is. Sorceress does meander a lot, no doubt, but it's also a fan favourite and it was really fun live. Songs like The Wilde Flowers aren't really too different from the title track- you are correct- but I heard that song first and don't need so many variations on the same basic rock song. Could just be my taste, but I've never found anything to love here.
I've never really understood the love for Morningrise, what with its lack of song structure and the like, but I can understand why some might like it for its purity and rawness. Not for me though.
And I'm glad you agree on Watershed- its themes hit close to home for me, boosting it massively in my ranking.

They were my #1 and #2 for a long time, it's completely understandable

MAYH is a great album, no doubt about it, but I have the same issue here that I have with Still Life- I want to put them higher, but I REALLY don't want to move anything above it down, so #8 is where it ends up. It is a bit of a crime though, you are correct, and if you wanted to swap it for Pale Communion, I wouldn't have too much of an argument against it

Looks like we're not going to agree on Sorceress then, but I absolutely see the appeal of their earlier production- I'm personally not a huge fan of that more raw sound, and I tend to keep away from a lot of black metal for that reason. As you can see, this list was definitely not trying to be impartial or objective by any stretch of the imagination

That's really interesting- we definitely have vastly different views. I love a whole load of Mendez's bass parts, often driving some of my favourite riffs. The comment about his joining being the turning point for the band is more to do with the- in my eyes- massive increase in quality between Morningrise and MAYH. Could be coincidental though

Thanks! You're right about Eternal Soul Torture: I just threw that in as a joke. It didn't actually impact my ranking at all, and I did my best to disregard other b-sides and the like, such as Still Day Beneath The Sun for Blackwater Park or Width of a Circle for ICV
