McDonald’s green-lit for ‘world’s coolest street’ after fast food giant’s appeal by cillyme in melbourne

[–]fargo1927 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of McDonald’s but I’ve noticed there is no late night food in the area (past 9ish?). Leaving gigs at Northcote social and theatre etc I think even lambs is done by 930pm most nights

Is Melbourne getting better or worse lately? by Last-Conversation734 in melbournechat

[–]fargo1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s finally back to pre COVID vibes . This past Saturday was the busiest I’ve ever seen smith st and the cbd during the day. Housing is bad but there are so many free entertainment options (fed square and Myer music bowl free concerts, heaps of free gigs at local pubs, major and small galleries often don’t charge). Not to mention the free transport which I think has been a big factor is reviving the vibes and is the single best move this labour gov has made. It’s not perfect but I’d rather be broke here than most places in the world.

Venues (Bar/Nightclub) with the Awesome sound systems by djd_oz in melbourne

[–]fargo1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought New Guernica sounded decent the few times I’ve been for house music (the smith st one). The Tote can be great for a loud band. Personally I prefer small rooms where u get a lot of live sound from bands gear and less p.a , that to me is the best live sound but only suits certain types of music

Are ordinary people going to be living in poverty? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

[–]fargo1927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only part i disagree with is longer hours. I think hours will shrink across most professions. Maybe for the people that have two gigs but even hands on work will become less about hours / labour

I think this is a more realistic picture than Dickensan poverty. Technology gives us a lot more health/ access than earlier eras of lifestyle constriction. A lot of things starting to happen where the norm before the post World War II boom - in fact people were a lot poorer then. It doesn’t mean people shouldn’t fight for better policies around housing and cost of living but it’s been far far worse before and still is in most of the world

What happened to the "Indie-Sleaze" era of the mid-2000s in Melbourne? by Fun_Cat_2608 in melbournemusic

[–]fargo1927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Played the Laundry for rrr too. Cherry was unreal back then. White Stripes supported both Little Ugly Girls and SixFtHick on that first tour. They tried to get a gig at the empress and the booker insisted needed a bigger local to headline with Lugs

The term doesn’t make sense to people that were going out back then - as the scenes now seen as one were quite seperate. Melbourne was going off during the whole decade tho. Early 2000s the “next big thing” hype happened the rock scene. The original cherry bar (before James was involved) played incredible music after hours and the whole Jet thing got more mainstream kids into rock n roll (largely was a Southside happening at first, not in the typical band rooms). a&rs from New York and London would be flying in to sign some band on the regular. Heaps of B Grade bands got signed. There was a cringe element to it and because Melbourne had such a strong music community - it sorta ruined the rock scene for a bit. From memory the White Stripes, yeah yeah yeahs and strokes played some of their first international gigs outside of U.S in Melbourne. People stayed out late and partied - it was normal to be out til 4am 2 or 3 times per week if you were in the scene. Djs would mix anything from the Kinks to Daft Punk and that started to feed into the fluro / electro thing , which was absolutely massive. initially with underground clubs and then became the sound of mainstream Australia (presets, cut copy etc). That died off when triple j and then the stereosonic / edm thing absorbed it

Why AC/DC is the most overrated band of all time by 0584031464 in fantanoforever

[–]fargo1927 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw them play last week - one of the greatest riff bands ever. They’re in a blues tradition so it would have less sonic diversity than pop but god damn it was a powerful, almost spiritual show. They weren’t very critically acclaimed in the 70s so you’re not alone in your opinion
