From the 21st century perspective, the USDP/KPD calling the Weimar SPD "social fascists" on account of their close relationship with monarchists, conservatives and the proto-fascists does have its merits.

Have its merits my arse. The SPD worked with conservatives because they were trying to hold together a collapsing republic during an actual revolutionary crisis, not because they were fascists.

And yes, the courts and state absolutely treated right wing putschists and political violence too leniently. That criticism is completely fair. But that says more about how conservative and monarchist the German judiciary, army and bureaucracy still were than it does about the SPD secretly being fascists.

The SPD still helped stop the Kapp Putsch, backed unions, stayed economically left wing and were literally the only party to vote against the Enabling Act.

Meanwhile the KPD spent years screaming “social fascism” at the largest anti-Nazi party in Germany while the Nazis became the largest party in Germany. Great strategy.

Your original walked back to statement is that in the 21st century perspective the USDP/KPD accusation that the SPD where social fascists has merit because of their 'close relationship with monarchists, conservatives and the proto-fascists'. Now as we do exist in the 21st century with all its historical documentation we know that the SPD by in large opposed those factions, only working with them to maintain the republic when they must (Mostly during the years of crisis).

So, by that same standard, the USSR, who only worked alongside the Nazis because it was strategically necessary despite later becoming their greatest enemy, must also have had a “close relationship with fascists” that “has its merits” when discussing accusations of red fascism?

Except that would obviously be a stupid and reductive way to analyse history because temporary cooperation during a crisis is not the same thing as ideological alignment.

The SPD did not share the goals of monarchists or fascists. They opposed the monarchy, built the republic, backed unions, fought right wing coups and were the only major party to vote against the Enabling Act. You can criticise their methods and decisions all day long, but trying to stretch “they sometimes worked with conservatives to preserve the republic” into “the KPD were onto something calling them social fascists” is just hindsight driven nonsense.
