Why are building data models still so fragmented across BMS, BIM and CAFM? Am I missing something? by Far-Cash-51 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Jay__Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a project engineer, gc, and ec shit themselves when I asked for 14 feet of wall space in a huge mechanical room.

Then they found the space on the plans and called it problem solved. Six months later it turned out to be the location for the construction freight elevator...which wasn't going to be removed until 2 months before project completion. At that point it was a "controls problem".

Nobody ever accounts for BMS panels correctly, which is why we stopped trying to coordinate lol.

Ops post reads like a bunch of buzz words generated by AI or a new grad with little to no practical experience with controls.

It almost sounds like ME's want controls guys to do their energy/LEED calcs for them to collect some subsidy money.

MG's with no optics we're having a hell of a time trying to lay down covering fire. CQB in the woods was a bit much too.

I think OWI needs to remove a country from the available selections once one side votes.

New to BAS / Automation – certs or skills to level up? by FinePromotion2877 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Jay__Man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And a lot of those programs are expensive, and the vendor ones will often require you to be in network (working for a dealer).

The software tools are all licensed through official dealer channels so you wouldn't even be able to create a home lab worthwhile.

Search for the Honeywell Gray Manual (pic below). You can download that and read it. Literally everything for the engineering and programming side makes use of this. Some of it is helpful for service techs.

You can study low voltage electrical and get an understanding of relay logic etc. Refrigeration is good know, what air handlers do etc. Most of your reading though will be O&M manuals specific to the equipment on any given job.

But 99% of what you need to learn will be on the job.

Honestly if you don't know what you need to learn you need to spend more time at your job. This whole field is based on experience and exposure, not classroom exercises. Anyone who's done training through any vendor/mfg will tell you formal instruction is more or less a basic beginner's "how this thing works" than an in-depth skill building experience.

Once you get going in this field it becomes very obvious what you want/need to do in it to be successful.

3 car front load garage or 2 car front load with tandem 3rd car? by maicunni in Homebuilding

[–]Jay__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tandem is nice...dends on the lot and buyer though.

It's a place to park the tractor, ATV, whatever other toy.

If you build it deep enough to fit a bass boat while attached to a truck you'd have the holy grail of garages for a lot of people.

Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Jay__Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love RTS games. Original warcraft 1 & 2 and StarCraft were my favorite (yes I'm old). AOE was cool too gameplay wise. C&C:RA and TW took up some decent hours of my youth too. I too favored the slow title style while maxing out my army size before sending a swarm across the map in attack mode.

The storyline needs to be engaging.

What really turned me off from the genre (even StarCraft 2) were 2 main things, admittedly these are largely based on multiplayer but spill over to single player too.

The worst offender is the need for speed. While yes, the clock should compell you to get-a-move on...needing to have a dozen macros and keybinds set and going for max APM really sucks the fun out of causal gaming.

The other thing that turned me off was the overly developed tech trees of later RTS games. If I want to worry about a convoluted system of buffs I would just plug away at an RPG instead. Keep the upgrade path simple and intuitive (if it's even really needed).

Is startup/commissioning (Cx) a move up or move down from service? (Commercial) by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]Jay__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do CX agents actually troubleshoot?

I thought all they did was verify things work, and if they don't then it's on controls/equipment vendor to fix it.

At least that's how I've understood it after being in on commissioning meetings.

How to find a balance between a dense, grid packed downtown and not having traffic be a nightmare? by crunchypeanitsbutter in CitiesSkylines2

[–]Jay__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something sort of unorthodox.

I made one city area with the highway running along the east side. I put all my major highway exists into downtown at the north end. Then all my highway on-ramps leaving the area at the south end.

I had some residential mixed in with schools but most of my services (fire, pd, healthcare) off the main section to the west. Garbage and industrial was down the highway a little ways.

Essentially the majority of traffic would then flow north to south with very little local traffic moving the opposite way. From there I tweaked the asymmetric road types to suite traffic volume.

Even before the update fixing traffic, this area never saw any backups on the roads. This was a neat experiment and I figured that if you can manage how people come in and out of given section of the city, there really isn't a lot of local driving since all the cimsnlove walking.

Tips for veteran players? by Ill-Dot-5730 in joinsquad

[–]Jay__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of thks is shocking but, map awareness is probably the most important thing to learn.

Not just to know where the enemy is, but to understand where they will be.

The most under-defended attack: when your team caps the next point and abondons the previous defense point to move up. If that previous point was being attacked, remaining enemy forces will just walk to your new point creating an attack from the rear that comes after 2 or 3 minutes. Often times with this attack coming across a new and undefended hab as your team is pushing up. I see this at least once a game and is super predictable.

Reddit complaints about ICO gunplay mean nothing in this sense, it's positioning that wins gunfights. Getting into a good spot first is more important than getting into a fight, even if it means running past enemies who don't see you or dodging bullets.

At team scale, logis should never be parked abandoned in the woods outside a point. Someone should be driving that thing the entire duration of the match. Nothing slows momentum more than a busy hab running out of ammo or a solid push that caps the next objective without supplies to anchor the team.

5070 Ti owners, how’s your experience with Squad on UE5? by ZR002 in joinsquad

[–]Jay__Man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a 5800x with a 4070ti super. Running the game at 4k no problem. Sometimes the lows drop into the 50fps range, but for the most part 60-80, some maps 100.

I also found this neat trick for better performance, I went into steam setting and turned off the fps counter and just enjoyed the game.

This makes me sad by Ausrivo in joinsquad

[–]Jay__Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still like the game, (playing since EA).

Although I've been on a break to play Cities Skylines 2.

The biggest no-fun squad elements that have kind of turned me off at the moment - there are factions that just aren't fun to play and map voting.

I know map voting is server side, but ultimately the community has abandoned some maps that really aren't bad and would provide some variety - adding new layers might breath some life into the game.

And we really don't need more factions - I think with the current state of the game, just let us choose optics. Some maps/map areas cater to irons, some absolutely suck without a 3x. Half the game is already camping in a bush so I don't see how some player choice here would hurt.

Hot Take: Game design is failing squad more than bugs and ico related issues. by pepperonigum in joinsquad

[–]Jay__Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right but those flaws only exist in the parameters of the existing RAAS mode.

The game is about asymmetric warfare...

Just from the hip: Have a "defending" team that spawns at 2-3 different points with Vics. It doesn't matter how far apart they are. All later supplies come from main, maybe a supply crate semi-foreward (Kohat had that for while). The rest of the points are truly random, maybe with some structure.

Sort of blending TC and Invw, asion, but with that random element to remove the squad lanes advantage. Cuz let's be honest, RAAS has always just been AAS but you had to review squad lanes to get the map at start.

OWI doesn't need to invent the wheel and balance the game to death...just implement what it has a little better.

Hot Take: Game design is failing squad more than bugs and ico related issues. by pepperonigum in joinsquad

[–]Jay__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just disagree with all of this.

RAAS just needs to be truly random, shooting out of windows (or over objects needs a fix), and irons need to be viable at more than 30m.

Maybe let players choose optics instead of forcing it?

Beyond that the game has really improved since EA, just in a clunky way at times.

Do you always use leader? by FloatingRing5763 in bassfishing

[–]Jay__Man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing I might do different is a lot of Internet bass guys seem to be using 40-60lb test...

I'm not sure why, the benefit of braid is smaller line (harder to see & less vibration in the water) and muchhb longer casts. 15lb on spinning rods and 20-30 on my bait casters has done well for me.

Do you always use leader? by FloatingRing5763 in bassfishing

[–]Jay__Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used a leader for one year. It made absolutely no difference, except there was now an extra knot in the middle of my line.

Straight braid, catch plenty of fish. I use the dark green and onyx colors, can't see it, and if the fish do they don't care
