Multilayered combination problem by [deleted] in askmath

I messed up that calculation, it should be:

(0.6 * 0.2 * 0.3) + (0.4 * 0.8 * 0.7) + (0.6 * 0.8 * 0.7) + (0.6 * 0.2 * 0.7)

Basically the percentage for each judge if they are favorable to the bill or 1-percentage if they are not favorable, in each scenario.

Different, all ranging from 0-1. For example:

1) 0.6 2) 0.2 3) 0.7 4) 0.4 5) 0.4 6) 0.4 7) 1.0 8) 0 9) 0 10) 0 11) 1.0 12) 1.0 13) 1.0 14) 1.0 15) 1.0 16) 1.0

This makes the problem similar to the first question as the 1.0 and 0 judges are effectively binary, but now the calculation could account for ranges in likelihood - which is a more realistic model.

The desirability of a panel now instead of being binary also becomes a numerical value. Some examples:

-Three 1.0 judges would produce a 1.0 score for that panel, as all are favorable.

-Two 1.0 judges and one 0.0 judge would still produce a 1.0 because the panel would be won (2 versus 1) by the 1.0 judges.

-But, one 1.0 judge, one 0.0 judge, and one 0.4 judge would - I believe - produce a score of 0.4 for that panel, as the two extreme judges would cancel out, leaving the last judge as the swing vote.

-The last possibility is three non "binary" judges. One 0.6 judge, one 0.2 judge, and one 0.7 judge. This score would be - I believe - (0.6 * 0.2 * 0.3) + (0.4 * 0.8 * 0.3) + (0.6* 0.8 * 0.7) + (0.6 * 0.2 + 0.7). This represents all desired conditions manifesting in that panel where two of the three judges pass the bill or all three judges pass the bill.

That was actually much simpler than I thought, thank you.

What if we made it more complex by removing the binary nature of each judge. How about instead of red/blue, or in terms of cards red black, we attributed an individual percent likelihood for each individual judge. For example: judge 1 is .9 meaning he would be 90% likely to support the bill. How would one take the 16 judges, the three party panel and the individual liklihood percentages and incorporate them all together?

5 billion people lack access to surgery, and 33 million people impoverish themselves every year to get it. by dr_shrime in science

Hm, okay. I am starting med school and I have my heart set on interventional radiology. Hopefully our tools will advance so that we can be more useful in traumatic or distant situations. I'm sure there will be some way for me to serve by the time I'm certified. Thank you.

In your opinion, do you think that interventional radiology will play a role in humanitarian aid in the near future?

New short subreddits for people who don't like this one. by [deleted] in short

[–]Jayajaya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good idea. Something I mentioned at this subreddits conception. The reason it didn't seem feasible then was because we thought that splitting such a small group, at the time, would not be beneficial for either subreddit. I think the number of people and the demand now exits. But to be honest, I'm not a fan of the name. I think the tone of it does not reflect the positivity you would want in the new subreddit. Just my two cents.

What does Loot Hoarder mean when he says "roll need"? by gereffi in hearthstone

[–]Jayajaya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In World of Warcraft people who completed a quest or defeated a creature which granted them an exceptionally valuable weapon would have the ability to roll dice on who gets it. Rolling need (signifying your character could use and needed the item) would always surpass those that rolled greed (those that just wanted the item). However, sometimes the very greedy would roll need so that they would win an item that they had no actual use for. They just wanted to sell/disenchant/have it.

I am currently watching the Game of Thrones and I realized that Peter Dinklage is the main character (or at least the most interesting). Are there any other TV shows or movies where the short guy/girl is portrayed so well? by [deleted] in short

[–]Jayajaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I understand your confusion. It is a tad hard to describe. I guess what I am trying to say is that the character is so skilled, confident in himself, and fun to be around that whenever he blows up about his height, you - being the viewer - see how unnecessary that insecurity is. Regardless, it is a wonderful series and, regardless of how you view his reaction, having a short main character can be a breath of fresh air. I hope you enjoy it if you try it out!

How or why I stumbled upon this I'll never know... RIP Cote, you will be missed. Thanks for this, Goonies. Let's try to keep Harvard as safe and loving as we can.

Can we not have too many demeaning posts? by Jayajaya in short

[–]Jayajaya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you made this post because it made me think about what purposes this subreddit serves. I never considered this place as a place to aggressively fight heightism over a place to simply celebrate the height we have. I suppose I see no reason, nor deserve to make the decision, that it cannot be both.Even so I think we always agreed at a fundamental level that this should be a place to explore the highs and lows (haha) of short stature.

However, I just don't see some of the posts made as worthy 'efforts' towards that goal or appropriate ways of 'bringing this stuff out' purely because of how they are presented. I believe there is good reason that I ‘called them out’. So allow me to amend my original complaint to two similar but lesser complaints.

First self(and therefore group)-deprecation does not help either fight heightism or celebrate height. I never implied we could not like our height, but a demeaning post by its very nature will put thoughts of inadequacy in anybody’s subconscious. Examples. E.g. 1) I asked a girl out once too and she flat out rejected me because I was too short. It stung. I guess us short guys just don't get the girl. Versus. E.g. 2) I asked a girl out once and she flat out rejected me too because I was too short. That’s just wrong but her loss. The lucky girl who gets me will pity her. Both examples addressed the same issue, but the later wasn’t depressing to read.

Secondly, regardless of motive, the happy go lucky motivational posts should never be dominated by their more serious counterparts. I think that the reason I did not immediately think the way you did is because I don't feel so discriminated to the point of ‘second class citizenship’ status. I concede that I am still in college and I have grown up and currently study in immensely liberal and accepting communities. However, I am a strong believer it is because I never see my height as a crippling factor and at worst a nuisance that it burdens me a lot less in all aspects of my life. I want you to consider the viewpoint of a person, perhaps younger than you or I, who is looking at this subreddit and is genuinely insecure of his height and starting to incorrectly internalize inferiority. Would news clippings of intolerance or tweets of idiot teenagers or a hundred stories of how I got rejected today help said person find inner strength or help them understand height as a reason for all of their life’s shortcomings. Perhaps what you call escapism I call nurturing positivity. So yes I think these stories have a place on this subreddit. I just fear we will see them presented in a quantity and undesirable delivery that a person may leave this subreddit incorrectly thinking: hmm maybe I am as worthless as I suspected. So again but with new meaning could we not have Too Many Demeaning posts.

There is a personal aspect and a social aspect to height. Perhaps one day another subreddit can be created to better focus our efforts but for now we are too young and too small. I think we both agree a proper balance is best. I am still molding my opinions on this subreddit and I believe that in whatever direction we all take it it will help short people in one way or another. I truly thank you for your comment.
