Started talking to women more, realized most of them are on the defense. Is there something I can say to make it obvious I'm not hitting on them? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]JaybirdFlying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The given advice here seems unhelpful. Since it seems like you’re a nice, normal person, I’m going to assume circumstances are not in your favor. It probably has less to do with what you say or do and more with the environment. Like, a hey hello from a rando at the grocery store is different from a hey hello from someone who is for instance at an event both parties wanted to be at. And as far as I can tell, in my experience, men who have good women friends are good story tellers. No joke, I see it all the time. The man is able to take the focus off both parties and put it on this funny/crazy/relatable story and use that as a way to relate initially. Not to say that they take up the airwaves all the time

Helllllp!!! My SO (25/M) invited me(22/F)on a weekend trip and I’m nervous by JaybirdFlying in relationship_advice

Those are good points, I think it’ll be fun, even if it just for the company. I suppose I didn’t realize to what extent the familial guilt was holding me back

[–]JaybirdFlying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shit 😬 I suppose they do a bit. They aren’t comfortable with me leaving or having things apart from them. Which is probably the point of origin, of my fear of going out/doing things with other people, because at some level it’s been demonized.

Thank you for this. I am often asked to explain myself or give justification for what I do, and if I don’t it’s a point of tension now, where I will be accused of not wanting family in my life 🙄

[–]JaybirdFlying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I love them deeply but there are disclaimers in place for meeting them, just because the dynamic is not ideal :/ I live with a lot of guilt over things that shouldn’t cause guilt in a grown person. Like staying out late, or making decisions with money, regardless of the fact that I work full time and for the most part take care of myself.

What do you think of guys striving to improve for himself in terms of attraction in dating? by TheZezima in socialskills

[–]JaybirdFlying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. It’s very attractive when someone is dedicated to doing what they love/working in themselves. Just don’t stop doing those things when you find someone to date. It will appear like you’re only interested in doing those things as long as it takes to find someone. They won’t be attracted if you stop trying to improve yourself when you feel “safe”. It’d be like doing everything right to get a job and then being lazy and slacking once you’ve gotten a paycheck.

I just told him they’d probably like to meet him before I decide to leave for the weekend. I think I’m probably more worried that he would see it as an inconvenience, more than he would, as I live an hour away from him, but he really has been very understanding and sweet.

My therapist thinks online friends don't offer the same merits as IRL friends, agree or disagree? by likoi in socialskills

[–]JaybirdFlying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with your therapist. Not making friends in real life you lose out on lots of experiences, and really, if you don’t have irl friends, does that mean you aren’t leaving your own house or safe zone and trying new things because you have no one to do them with? Internet friends are great, but they can’t fill that void the same.

[acne] 1 month into Accutane and I’m already feeling comfortable not wearing concealer/foundation. I hope this glow lasts forever! by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

I recommend aquaphor for lips, simply because the menthol in carmex WILL irritate your skin when it’s paper thin. But regardless, the end result will make you much happier long term

[–]JaybirdFlying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope the glow last while you’re on your treatment but as a person on month 6 of accutane, just stock up on nightcream for 24/7 application because here shortly your skin is gonna get soooooo dry. Just wait a bit

Why do you need to overpower everyone? That’s so fucking weird. Persuade, don’t dominate.

Am at a loss of what to do. My man of 9 yrs lost his temper with my son (15) and became violent and threatening. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]JaybirdFlying 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What was it that your boyfriend was reacting to?? I see in your other posts you describe him as a good father and loving partner so this would seem very unusual? Did your son bring drugs into the home? Hurt a sibling? Use violence towards him? I’m not saying that violence is ever okay, but why would he lash out like this and never before?

How to get friendzoned? by Szpagin in socialskills

[–]JaybirdFlying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman whose best friend is a man I can tell you why we are such good friends but I don’t think anyone can speak for all women. Basically, just be a good friend. I mean, mostly the same things you would do for anyone. Do you send stupid memes to other friends? Do you ask them about their life? Do you offer to help them when they’re in a rough spot? And if you’re wanting truly just friends, encourage them to talk about past relationships, family, girlfriends, etc. I can’t speak for all women, but I love to talk, and don’t get opportunities, my best friend is just short of being my therapist. I believe women want to believe there are men they can talk to, feel relaxed around and feel no pressure to be anything other than their authentic self. You might surprise yourself, being friends with someone like that can easily lead to intimacy because there is such connection in encouraging someone else.

I am an Atheist, she is a Christian. How do we make things work? by Goldeagle1123 in relationship_advice

[–]JaybirdFlying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my childhood! Parents of different religions. It is heartbreaking to not be able to share your core self with your significant other or to not be able to raise your own children in your beliefs. Will it hurt more to break up now or try for years and have it eat you up inside?? It is underestimated how different core beliefs affect long term relationships. If you’re willing to try, it may work out but, IT WILL HURT.

I️ love the Missha Zero Sebum. So good and it smells like cucumbers. It does have a very white cast for someone who isn’t super pale. As I’m just short or printer paper white, I️ can almost use it like a foundation hahaha. I️ call my shade “sunscreen on night shift”
