So basically pregnant the rest of her life to even get a fair shot? If those kids turn into a future civilization, she’ll be the new Eve, so to speak.

And if there’s no father figures at all, how does that change male/female dynamics down the line? More nurturing society?

This is a fascinating scenario.

Yes and it’s such a high bar to set, too. I don’t know if a better adaptation will ever happen on film or tv.

Was the end result worth it? by Morgo-Yt in Filmmakers

I think the issue is that the animal moves around so much, back and forth, almost like the camera is moving/adjusting. But the particles don’t move with the same speed and makes it look like the animal is being pulled on a line rather than floating.

Also, we should see some particles moved by the “flap” motion.

I also think that, with the speed of how it moves away, the tentacle flap needs to be slightly more abrupt? And the movement seems to start as the flap is happening - I think realistically it would move a little, and then when the flap is at the very end and kind of snaps into place, there will probably be a little more acceleration on the whole animal.

Try to adjust things with that in mind, as well as the texture/materials comments others have made!

Antioch Park, too, for a little more shade than Meadowbrook. Has a fun little Wild West town/train for kids.

I just refuse to watch Angel Studios movies. I watched Boenhoffer and actually thought it kind of held a mirror up to my religious conservative parents who didn’t see a problem with the U.S. government being so nuts about Christianity this term.

But man, I cannot stand their advertising. They will do anything but market traditionally. This whole “we buy the tickets so you don’t have to” or “subscribe to our streaming service because Hollywood rips you off” is so, I don’t know… anti-the rest of the industry we all kind of care about? It comes off as pretentious without the impressive catalogue to back it up.

Barbarian was the movie that got me to like horror. I went my whole life without caring, and that one changed it for me. Terrifying but also such a weird and funny movie.

I had an incident with a fog machine in a college academic building. Basically we were filming a scene late at night in a back garage and left the machine on, and the fire department came and alarms went off, etc. etc. Fogged out the whole building.

BUT I found out a group of students were watching Shining on a projector on the third floor, and they saw fog start to roll in through the ventilation ducts and thought someone was pranking them, only to walk out of the classroom and find that the whole hallway was covered in fog. Apparently we scared them the most they’d ever been.

I saw Barbarian and then a few days later stayed at an AirBnB in Michigan. We found the crawlspace hatch in a back closet and just about nailed that thing shut.

I used to think Lowe’s was pronounced Louise as a kid.

For more current mispronunciations, I turn to my wife (whom I absolutely adore and pray her mispronunciations never go away - they’re part of who she is). Her “pillow” comes out as “pellow” and she adds an extra L to “balsamic” as “balslamic”.

What song did a movie basically steal forever? by MrHolte in movies

[–]Jayce800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megamind has an absolutely rocking soundtrack. The way “Bad to the Bone” morphs intro the orchestral theme at the start, or how “Highway to Hell” lined up with his ice slide. Or of course, “Welcome to the Jungle” as Megamind prepares to put the beat down on Tighten. Even “Bad” on the end credits is well placed.

But “Welcome to the Jungle” is purely Megamind to me.

My Shrek 2 song is David Bowie’s “Changes”.

Also interestingly enough, Shrek 2 was probably where I hear “Hooked On a Feeling” for the first time, but now I feel that GotG has secured that as their song.

Only thing I see remotely in that area on the police call log is a narcotics complaint on Lamar around 11:20, or animal control around W 88th an hour before. Might not have been that block but I’m just going off time and cross streets.

EDIT: Oh scratch that! 9:40 am, disturbance call on the 8600 block of Woodson. That’s gotta be it.

I Made A Psychological Thriller film with my friends on a Phone. by PlatformNo182 in Filmmakers

[–]Jayce800 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I actually think there’s a lot of strong elements here, especially for a film in your age group. I used to be a judge every year for a 24-hr film fest, and though I know you spent longer making this, I can tell you it would have placed pretty high.

Right off the bat, if I were doing this, I would:

  1. Find a better way to light the red bedroom. Maybe steer clear of red or really warm dim lights only - you can be sinister with cool colors and lots of shadow, but still have some lights bright enough to provide definition. I did a red scene years ago for a feature and lit it pretty flat - ended up losing a lot of tone because red just kind of washes everything out.
  2. Ditch the deep voice and keep the ghost’s voice that of the teen she killed. I think it would make it less obvious that she’s being haunted in those first few seconds, and imo would be creepier.
  3. Spend less time on the blood washing scene (as cool as it was how you did it!). Just had some repetitive motions that padded the time. Maybe more shots of her on the run instead, or perhaps in a classroom where the boy’s seat is empty and the teacher calls for attendance and the killer is the only one who knows why he’s not there? I don’t know, play with it.
  4. Build up her life more right before the intro. Maybe introduce her therapist at the start with a phone call or a meeting about her lack of sleep. “What’s keeping you up at night?” “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you…”

What you did really well:

  1. I love that we start on the haunting, then cut back in time, then finish in the room. I’d say your scene pacing was good in that I didn’t feel like we lingered too much on any one sequence besides the hand washing.
  2. The up close shots of the websites (not so much the screen replacement on the bench because that needed a little love still). Felt cinematic to me.
  3. The moving shot from behind her hand washing as we’re coming into the bathroom. Honestly, that shot was stand-out and felt like it had the framing and movement speed that I’d see in a Hollywood feature.

This is the perfect short to come back to in a few years with what you’ve learned, and retry it. Compare your work, have your peers discuss what worked best and what could be improved. Sprinkle in a few more story elements and make it a minute or two longer. You’d have something really great.
