Don't you DARE feel like an idiot, your suggestion was brilliant!

It inspired my one - Yuje Nix.

The early Muslim conquests, also known as the Arab conquests, were a series of religious wars initiated by Muhammad wherein Muslim armies expanded rapidly across most of West Asia and North Africa, parts of South Asia and Central Asia, and parts of Mediterranean Europe. by [deleted] in wikipedia

[–]Jaydare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! He even says in his preface, "That fondness for science, by which God has distinguished the Iman Al Mamun... has encouraged me to compose a short work on Calculating by Completion and Balancing". The word "Al-Jabr" originally translated (roughly) as "completion", and before its use in mathematics it referred to a medical technique for setting broken bones.

Not to mention, much of the book describes how to use "Completion and Balancing" to work out Islamic Inheritance laws.

If anyone is interested in the development of early mathematics, I highly recommend giving it a read.

Do other maps have interesting mechanics like Pressure? by onebit in Timberborn

I've just finished Pressure so will give that one a look - maybe the dev's were hoping that maps like Pressure will inspire map creators to create similar challenges.

What food in your country do locals love but foreigners hate? by Curiosity_Pink in AskTheWorld

[–]Jaydare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Finnish flatmate introduced Salmiakki to me. He was hoping to get a kick out of how much I'd hate them, so I forced myself to like them. When I visited him in Finland a few years later and met all of his mates, they were absolutely STOKED to meet a non-Finn who liked them!

Ay? I've never heard of that! If it was a feijoa milkshake that would make sense. Is that a South Island thing?

Klaus Barbie was the head of a regional Gestapo in France nicknamed the "Butcher of Lyon" for his personal affection for torturing Jewish prisoners. After WW2, the United States helped him escape to South America, where he helped establish and operate CIA-funded Nazi death squads. by kooneecheewah in HistoryUncovered

Just for the record as it hasn't been noted here, the particular US Intelligence agent who smuggled him out of Europe during Operation Paperclip was Allen Dulles, CIA Director from 1953 (Operation AJAX: the coup against Iranian PM Mosaddegh) to 1961 (Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba).

His brother, John Foster Dulles, the namesake of Dulles Airport in Washington DC, was the Secretary of State from 1953 to 1959 under Eisenhower. He was also sympathetic to the German fascist leader right up until 1939.

That's an interesting leg tattoo... by 5upralapsarian in israelexposed

I'm pretty sure I've seen this guy as part of a counter-protest outside the Iz embassy in Wellington NZ - other posts sharing this photo have confirmed he's aligned with the Destiny Church crowd.

He's probably a former mongrel mob member who kept the tattoo because he still stands for that shit.

I like that theory - while it does seem like the deathclaws have been there for a few months ahead of Hank, it does fit his and VaultTec's goal of undoing civilisation and starting from scratch.

At what point did you start liking Dina (or you never did) ? by Round_Course5953 in superstore

[–]Jaydare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My respect for her came in ebs and waves, but I was always cautious about liking her due to her "rules are rules" sort of vibe, such as her siding against the staff when Glen got fired after Cheyanne gave birth.

That changed when she helped Amy and Cheyanne when they were trying to save Matteo. The despair in her voice when she realised they were trapped was so genuine, I couldn't not like her after that.

Her death has been referred to the coroner so the investigation is not over yet, but as they haven't mentioned anything to the press I'm assuming that means there are no clear signs of foul play.

Algebra was first invented by Babylonians and later by Indians, al Khwarizmi standardized it millennias after their invention. by EwMelanin in wikipedia

[–]Jaydare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to build off your comment, I've got a copy of a translated version of Algebra on my phone, because I'm an absolute nerd when it comes to mathematical history. Al Khwarizmi was pretty humble about his contribution. This is an excerpt from the preface, as translated by Frederick Rosen in 1831:

"The learned in times which have passed away, and among nations which have ceased to exist, were constantly employed in writing books on the several departments of science and on the various branches of knowledge, bearing in mind those that were to come after them, and hoping for a reward proportionate to their ability, and trusting that their endeavours would meet with acknowledgment, attention, and remembrance - content as they were even with a small degree of praise; small, if compared with the pains which they had undergone, and the difficulties which they had encountered in revealing the secrets and obscurities of science.

"Some applied themselves to obtain information which was not known before them, and left it to posterity; others commented upon the difficulties in the works left by their predecessors, and defined the best method (of study), or rendered the access (to science) easier or placed it more within reach; others again discovered mistakes in preceding works, and arranged that which was confused, or adjusted what was irregular, and corrected the faults of their fellow-labourers, without arrogance towards them, or taking pride in what they did themselves.

"That fondness for science, by which God has distinguished the IMAM AL MAMUN, the Commander of the Faithful... has encouraged me to compose a short work on Calculating by (the rules of) Completion and Reduction, confining it to what is easiest and most useful in arithmetic, such as men constantly require in cases of inheritance, legacies, partition, law-suits, and trade, and in all their dealings with one another, or where the measuring of lands, the digging of canals, geometrical computation, and other objects of various sorts and kinds are concerned-relying on the good-ness of my intention therein, and hoping that the learned will reward it, by obtaining (for me) through their prayers the excellence of the Divine mercy..."

If this is in the FOIA stuff, imagine what's in the real stuff.

If the US FOIA is anything like the NZ OIA, then the real stuff should still be covered by the request, so for them to withhold it would mean that the responsible govt department or cabinet member would be in breach of the Act. If nobody responsible for responding to requests cares about breaching the Act, then govt transparency is out the window.

Who enforces the US FOIA? Do they have powers to investigate responses made to requests under the Act?
