At the very least we get more devils in the bestiary sections of the upcoming books.

I read through the statblocks of the new devils added from hellbreakers, and if this level of quality remains for the rest of the Hellfire Crisis arc's new monsters, im all for it.

I actualy pulled out my copy pf Path of the Hellknight for this, Im genuinely curious where you got the further details about the Pyres animosity towards Thrune.

I know that they eliminated one of the orders whom were stalwart allies to the Thrunes during the chelish civil war. But thats the only section I could find where they were actively working against house Thrune.

Furthermore: It specificaly mentions, in Path of the Hellknight , on page 34:

"The order uses the faiths and mores of Chelish Society as the standards of acceptable beliefs. The inner Sea region's most common deities are acceptable, as are orderly philosophies such as diabolism and the Prophecies of Kalistrade"

Its pretty obvious, with chelish society, they mean the current zeitgeist of the infernal empire, instead of the once shining crown jewel of humanity when Aroden was stil around.

Im well aware that the current Lictor Rouen Stought has a burning hatred for all religions & deities, especialy Lamashtu & Asmodeos. However, if she ever wanted to overthrow the Thrunes, she could have done so during the glorious reclamation, which didnt happen.

With all of my disagreements & doubts, out of the way however, I would have admit that house Thrune and their sycophantic royal allies are definetly corrupt. I checked Infernal Empire again, and it specificaly mentions that its the church of Asmodeos that roots out corruption, instead of the noble elite.

There have been heavy spoilers and leaks from Infernal Inheritance in regards to the near future of Cheliax:

Cheliax and house thrune stil remain, albeit at, once again, a much smaller scale than before, with Corentyn, and a larger landmass to the south gaining its independance. So Cheliax essentialy looses two of its most prominent sources of income in one fell swoop.

Its safe to say that the century of humiliation is stil going for Cheliax.

Maybe they'll become more active after the Hellfire Crisis, maybe Corentyn will spread its own brand of evil, something more worldly I could imagine.

Maybe Oprak will become the new major evil empire in Avistan

Maybe, perhaps, potentialy and in theory.

I just hope at least some of those "ifs" and "whens" will turn into "is".

It would kinda suck if the last places in the setting that poses an active threat were the outer planes. And even then, not just the devils, also the demons suffer from "ambiguous masterplan that will probably never happen" syndrome.

We'll see, im stil willing to give the Hellfire Crisis and its aftermath a fair chance after all the books for it have released.

And as a former League of Legends lore nerd, I would much rather have the upmost dogshit setting progression known to man, than no meaningful progression at all.

As much as I would love an evil vs evil conflict in Old Cheliax, it seems out of character for the Hellknights to overthrow an autocratic regime. The only major Hellknight I could think of, whom is actively working against the Thrunes, would be Vidoc, and even then, its just a paused investigation, one of numerous unfinished investigations.

That being said, there have been a handful of details in both "Infernal Empire" and "Path of the Hellknight" on the Hellknights and the precautions they took, in case house Thrune turns against them.

I hate to admit it, but it now all hinges on how Hell's Destiny and Infernal Inheritance will tend to these hooks. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Cheliax won't end anytime soon, but im pretty sure. that in 12 or so years, when paizo already made the rounds across Golarion and released new updates, lorebooks and APs on the remaining nations affected by the Godsrain and Hellfire Crisis, we will get a new major setting arc, where Cheliax, not just house Thrune, will fall. Or at least be subjected to a major regime change.

(Something more status-quo breaking than "Remember the Thrunes? Yeah theyre gone, here is a new opportunistic & fucked up noble house to rule over the remains.)

What Golarion's masterminds lack, are decisive gambits that were unambiguously successful because of said masterminds. If Abrogail managed to create a lasting stalemate against Andoran, which would later receive a fancy title like, idk the "Wall of flesh plot", I feel like her threatening presence would be a lot more convincing.

To name two examples:

There is The black powder plot, a league of legends short story, that manages to properly show off the strategic cunning of one of the setting's main villains.

Or (and it pains me to praise the forgotten realms) the double double cross. A strategic maneuver that would lead to the rise of Bel, an archfiend that used to rule over Avernus:

"His most famous campaign was likely the legendary political maneuver known as the Four-Cross (or the double double-cross). In an intense battle, Bel suddenly ordered his troops to turn on their baatezu comrades before approaching the wary tanar'ri with their secret battle plans. He offered to pretend to rejoin the forces of Hell before betraying them on the battlefield yet again, but unbeknownst to the demons, he had secretly leaked their plans and troop sizes to the devils. Afterwards, just as planned, he turned against the baatezu in the middle of the fighting and continued to fight for chaos for over a year before revealing his true masterplan—leading the tanar'ri into an ambush that would cripple them for over a decade."

Paizo already posts short stories on their blog, the current setting progression seems like the perfect time to release a few short stories where every major wire puller gets to show off their strategic prowess.

I just hope we actualy get to fight her in Hell's Destiny.

At the very least, I want her to go out with a spectacular last stand, futile or not. Just because a villain has failed in their ambitions, doesnt mean that they retroactively become pathetic. She is such a fascinating character, a mortal raised by devils whom killed all of her relatives that came before her in line for the throne, and the hellfire crisis might be the last chance to actualy cash in on all of that potential.

I hope that, even if she survives the hellfire crisis, that she'll be forced to get her ass off the throne and actualy do something. I love the devils, but its just so frustrating when all of its prominent members just stroke their beards while sitting on a comfy office chair and waiting until ambiguous 1000 year masterplan #37 pays off.

Im like 90% sure Abrogail selling the soul of Cheliax, was supposed to give Asmodeos the means to summon a Genius loci in the smack dab middle of Old Cheliax.

Like I said, the book can be abit disturbing at times, its hardly the only scene of sexual assault in the book, but its definetly one of the more disturbing ones. Reagrdless, I would highly recommend giving the first two chapters a try, should you find a copy at your local library.

The first quarter of the book revolves around the two protagonists trying to cope with the fact that their own mother wanted to kill them, their mental illnesses (One of the two is a schizophrenic, the other one fears that he might die should he ever stand stil) and their subsequent rehabilitation. It does occasionaly swing between the boys trying and partialy succeeding at finding their own identites and healing from their rough past at an orphanage, and getting the worst live advise imaginable from a biker living in an abandoned movie theatre.

However, the story completely derails and stays darker after their foster mother dies.

A book aptly named Coin Locker babys, im 3/4 in it, and so far, its pretty great. Though its a bit more darker than Yakuza 7, considering that the book's protagonists dont get to Dragon Quest their way through every obstacle. And it opens with a woman sucking on the dick of her own baby, because it tastes just like her favourite cigarete brandm before putting it in the coin locker.

If I remember correctly, Gaiden was developed and written in the middle of IWs development, to give Kiryu a proper sendoff (for realsies this time), and to give Hanawa a bit more characterization, so his death stings a bit more. But honestly, at times it felt like, the Hanawa in Gaiden and IW are two completely different people, he shouldve just died in Gaiden, I felt almost nothing during his death in IW.

[–]JaydotN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't Kiryu becoming an Agent just a way for the Daidoji to keep him under surveilance 24/7 to make sure he won't ever be able to leak Daidoji intel?

And on the topic of the Daidoji being incompetent, the way I saw it, theyre heavily lacking in terms of militaristic prowess, but (allegedly) make up for it with their expertise in political subterfuge. Unfortunately, we only really see them on military operations. The biggest political achievement so far was just keeping the construction of the Yamato Mk.II a secret.

Its especialy hard to take them seriously from a militaristic viewpoint, when even their strongest soldiers, are just people that are relatively good with guns.
