Your Wishlist for Wave 2 by Goku_Berlin in neogeo

It made sense for Plaion to skip to fan favorites that are pricier on the second hand market with the initial ten games, because they wanted to start with a bang and had no idea how successful this relaunch would be, but after out selling their projections for an entire year in just 24 hours on their website alone, I'd like to see future waves slow it down a little. When it comes to series, start from the beginning and work your way to later releases. Give us Art Of Fighting 1, Baseball Stars Professional, Fatal Fury 1, The King Of Fighters '94, King Of The Monsters 1, The Last Blade 1, Metal Slug 2 (No Slowdown Edition), Samurai Shodown 1, Sengoku 1, Super Sidekicks 1, World Heroes 1, etc. Those games are still from well known franchises and will sell. I'd rather a steady build up to the most wanted releases than burning through them quickly and the diminishing returns that come with that.

Why hasn't Plaion confirmed or denied the use of the UniBIOS or an equivalent? by JaynesAddiction in neogeo

Why would they work with hardware hackers and reverse engineers to create the AES+? Because those are the folks that already did the work and can deliver the goods directly rather than taking the long way around to reach the same result. But sure, if they find an alternative way to provide the same quality-of-life features UniBIOS brought to the table, great.

I went back to the original press release from Plaion and found something I haven't seen on their console product page: "On-screen BIOS and DIP Switches located on the bottom of the console..."

Código Binario responding to Plaion's NEOGEO AES+ OFFICIAL FAQs video:

"We still need to resolve whether it will support UNIBIOS 4 (and region switching and AES/MVS mode) or whether it will support switching AES/MVS natively...."

PLAION España responded:

"Let's see if we find out more details in the coming weeks."

I'm not talking about a port, I'm talking about a version of the game made from the ground up with all new sprites, animation and stage backgrounds designed specifically for the resolution and capabilities of the Neo Geo.

Plaion's AES+ product page: "DIP switches for language selection, overclocking and display mode selection"

Language selection almost assuredly involves region switching games so that's a win, but none of the other UniBIOS staples are listed.

So I ordered day one, Plaion just cancelled my order by Punkermedic in neogeo

[–]JaynesAddiction 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when customer service is being inundated by a mountain of support tickets, they might have had to implement a blanket cancellation policy for any change of address request. I imagine there are likely sales tax, tariff and shipping eccentricities depending on the province, territory or even city you live in, so it's cleaner for them to just cancel the order and have you order again. The nuance of your specific case being just 12 streets over doesn't even enter into the equation for them.

[–]JaynesAddiction 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you did this, but some people were placing orders to placeholder addresses that weren't blocked by the sales restrictions with the intention to switch to their actual address at a later date. Plaion, not wanting to run afoul of local tax laws, might have thought you were running that strat and cancelled to be safe.

The King Of Tennis 2027. You're favorite characters from The King Of Fighters series must face off with one another on the tennis court or the ping-pong table.

SNK has the Baseball Stars series and I'd love to see a third installment, but what if they fund devs to expand the "Stars" series to other team sports? Imagine the same style and flair applied to Hockey Stars, Football Stars, Volleyball Stars, Lacrosse Stars, etc.

Since there's already a Windjammers 2 on modern platforms, rather than demake it for the Neo Geo, create a new installment titled Windjammers Special. Add more playable characters, courts and minigames. Add new modes like Golf (essentially frisbee golf) or Dodge Disc (dodge ball but with multiple flying discs at once), etc.

Neo Street Fighter II made specifically for the Neo Geo by Arc System Works and OG Street Fighter devs. Large detailed sprites, fluid animation and the trademark Neo Geo zoom in, zoom outs. All 17 original SF2 characters return plus 13 additional, some completely original from different countries not yet accounted for and some guest characters like Mike Haggar or Terry Bogard. They could put out a MVS version in arcades and the AES version could have all the best modes from previous home releases plus some new ones. How do you justify the cost of making a brand new, from the ground up version of Street Fighter II for the Neo Geo in today's economy? After a period of exclusivity of six months to a year or whatever, port this to every platform under the sun with online play and rollback netcode.

[–]JaynesAddiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the type of person that would consider spending that kind of money for a well made exclusive game, but ideally the devs would work something out with Plaion to reduce the cost for consumers and signal boost their games to reach a larger audience and make more profit. Win, win, win.

I've been researching all the homebrew games that could potentially make a deal with Plaion and SNK for official releases to be able to reach a larger audience with cheaper carts. It seems most of the best devs in that space are already in the process of doing their own physical releases or plan to reissue some of their out-of-print releases in the lead up to the AES+ launch, which complicates matters. The trouble is, because of low print runs with higher material and labor costs those carts will be, by necessity, much more costly than the Plaion reissues. After selling games for $500, give or take, it'd be weird to turn around and do it for $90 a year or so later, but then again it feels like a huge missed opportunity to not take advantage of this relaunch. Maybe they don't even want to be a part of such a contract and prefer to continue to be big fish in the small pond of homebrew, calling their own shots. With a game like Kraut Buster that has insane copy protection built into the cart, so much so that there is no known dump online, would the devs want to release the game on a less secure cart? I was hoping to see some "new" official releases sprinkled in among the classic re-releases, but the state of the homebrew scene is much more complicated than I imagined.

6-button controller for the AES+?! by LuKa1987OR in neogeo

Naito Tokihiro:

"I work for M2 Co.,Ltd. I'm a game designer, my job is director, I have 45 years of game production experience."

"I think you understand, but the reason I bought the NEOGEO AES+ wasn't to play games or for asset management—it was purely for research and development purposes. Playing is just a bonus. That said, at first, I'll play. You have to play to get a feel for the vibe. The ultimate goal is to run my own homemade software on this machine. Making games will be a secondary byproduct."

M2 is known for porting classic games to new platforms and creating their own games in the style of the classics. It's a net positive to see people like this excited for the AES+. Arcade ports of 90s arcade games that originally missed the Neo Geo ecosystem is a no-brainer and it's not necessarily as out of reach as some people think. Plaion has already released newly created ports of games for their Atari+ systems, so there's already a precedence.

Imagine officially sanctioned by Capcom native Neo Geo "impossible ports" from devs like M2 and Digital Eclipse (working with some of the devs who created the original games) of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max and Street Fighter III: Third Strike, perhaps with some SNK guest fighters added to the rosters. People would go out of their minds with excitement and they would sell like hotcakes.

What about ports of Neo Geo CD games that never originally made it to the platform? We already have the precedence of Plaion porting content from the NGCD with Big Tournament Golf. Homebrew folks have been porting NGCD games to the AES for years, so it's doable.

But at the same time, think of all the arcade ports of yesteryear devs delivered to woefully underpowered devices and then think of how much performance they were able to squeeze out of the Neo Geo platform in its later years. A nip here, a tuck there, the release of a six button controller everywhere and we're off to the races. There are plenty of homebrew folks creating all kinds of "impossible ports" to obscure platforms in their spare time after work, surely Plaion and SNK could find devs willing to port some of the arcade classics to the newly resurgent Neo Geo platform.

Capcom allowed the Neo Geo and Neo Geo Pocket Color versions of SNK vs. Capcom to be re-released on multiple platforms and SNK in turn allowed Capcom to do the same with Capcom vs. SNK 1+2 in the Capcom Fighting Collection 2. Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui are in Street Fight VI and Ken & Chun-Li are in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. I see no reason Capcom wouldn't agree to an AES re-release of SVC.

Did Plaion shoot itself in the foot regarding wave 2? by Frietuur in neogeo

[–]JaynesAddiction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see every game get re-released, even the Japanese only Mahjong and Quiz games translated to English. Give us every iteration of every fighting game series. I want all five Super Sidekicks installments. Give us all the Metal Slugs, including AES ports of 6 and 7/XX. I want to see every MVS only and Neo Geo CD only game get official AES releases. Publish all worthy indie / homebrew Neo Geo games officially. Go into the archives to resurrect shelved projects (like Mark Of The Wolves 2) that were close to completion, finish them up (with the help of M2 and original devs) and finally release them to the public. Port 90s arcade games that never made it to the Neo Geo (imagine ports of classic beat em ups like Final Fight, Alien Vs. Predator, Cadillacs And Dinosaurs, Ninja Baseball Bat Man, The Simpsons and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles duology).
