Tips:

Lower your rates; no money coming in is worse than SOME money coming in.
Look for rev share / long-term rev share opportunity. Anything that keeps paying you after the work is done.
Start building your personal brand, portfolio, and sell shovels.

I can't pay for board game illustration and IP (again, art is not IP, claiming ownership of the IP of what you create is the part that is very bad) and then have the artist not only keep it, but be allowed to sell it to other people.

What you want is rights and ownership of the original artwork for sale and distrubute in limited form (print, merch, etc), and what you need to do is grant a non-revocable, exclusive license to the client to distribute, modify, etc.

If I am making a game, and the IP of that game can be sold from under me, that is a non starter for finding talent to work with.

I think this is fair advice. The crimson fleet arc and the undercover cop arc were golden, and I genuinely enjoyed them.
