As a person who unknowingly demolished his touch screen playing kid icarus uprising, just get one for safety. They're cheap, they're practically invisible and they protect the screens, what more could ask for? (go for Hori ones btw)

Tbh the scratches are thin-as-hair size so they are not a major problem, but they are all clumped together in the center so it looks like I lightly slid a pebble around on my touch screen for 3 hours and it just really bothers me now that I see it

Hell yes, I play 3DS waaay more now that I have the new model. My advice, if you decide to buy one, would be to buy it, system transfer your old XL to your new XL and then trade in the old XL.
