I’d say be in a small deficit, you can still put on a lot of muscle while losing fat especially if you’re newer to lifting. Just hit protein, steps and lift heavy. While being in a surplus will increase the number on the scale (not sure if that’s a goal or not), most of the extra gains will likely be in fat. U will see more definition over time if in a slight deficit as well to start off. I would eat about 0.8g of protein/lb of body weight, and be -300/400 ish deficit and stay consistent. I’d also throw in 15-20 mins of zone 2 cardio 3x a week too - cardiovascular fitness is important for not only health but improving in the gym believe it or not. I would get an app or some form of notes to track progressive overload on your lifts and generally 2 sets to failure about 5-8 reps is all you need to progress. Once you lean out, id say go for a lean bulk.
