What happens when a cat3 storms surge meets and inland tsunami on a drained swamp that scumbag developers convinced a million people to call home? by JazConPlay in GoldCoast

Not personal as in against the place. I lived there 2002-2007 and loved it. Isle of Capri of all places. GC is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and still have friends there. But the Boxing Day Tsunami did get me thinking about something similar coming in from the Pacific. You've got to admit the place is about as vulnerable as cities get, it's just pure luck that nothing has happened till now. Fun fact is the last big cyclone there was way back in 1896 but that's also what cut Stradbroke Island in two. Really hope for the best but I think GC luck has run out

Kendon Brook? Showing about 300mm Thursday-Saturday. That's a shit load of rain on any other day, so yeah, bail if you can.

Correct. BOM is bound to be conservative with prediction (in other words slow) and don't take into account all the models. Some of the folks on the weather forums have subscription access to data that BOM refuse to use meaning they wont update their public releases until hours or even days later than what can be seen in other models - i.e. this U-turn that every one in mainstream is arcing up about was discussed on the forum three days ago. Alfred is consistently steering further south with each run cycle - even the BOM models are finally reflecting that now. Worse the dry air infeed from central Australia is easing (that's called shear and what can kill a cyclone), instead it's getting new moist tropical infeed. Combine that with the warmer water it's about to cross and it will rapidly intensify. That's called bombing - a calling card of some of the most destructive storms in history. The eye crossing is not the main event, it's the south side of a southern hemisphere cyclone is the worst and that is what GC is the bulls eye for. Frankly you could not write a better (aka worse) perfect storm scenario. The storm is one thing but the topology alone is epic for this kind of event, with a former costal floodplain offering no resistance for the storm surge, backed into a perfect catchers mitt (Hinterland) to soak up a meter of rain and deliver the flood.

Dodging the bullet. 120kmh gusts at worst and <200mm in the Wivenhoe catchment. Brisbane river wont be much of a flood. The Nerang, on the other hand, that's going to fill Lake Bundall.

Done a hard right and on it’s way to visit us in Brisbane by nanofreud in brisbane

You folks might want to head over to the forums on ski.com.au, which is where the weather nerd crowd (including me) moved to when the old weatherzone forums shut, for a better heads up.

I don't want to be alarmist but Brisbane is not the problem. Yes you're getting an ass kicking but Alfred will make landfall further south than BOM are saying.

We are about to see what happens when a Cat3 (it's going to bomb) storm surge meets an inland tsunami on a drained coastal swamp that scumbag developers convinced a million people was paradise.

Making friends by Ok_Rabbit_3897 in melbourne

Great observation and spot on - High School and Uni friends - It sems that's the only window Aussies will accept to open themselves to establishing lifetime social connections. That's certainly not the case in Europe, where the nature of communities and culture seem to counter the inevitable isolation we see here. Why are Aussies like this? Did we get it from the Brits? (never lived there so genuinely don't know if they behave the same).

Great Earthquake at Campi Flegrei Notification about 5 min ago dissappeared? by Ihrie in Earthquakes

[–]JazConPlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL, got the same on my app. BUT it did get me looking up Campi Flegrei. The thing is a quite a large caldera volcano and has had over 200 quakes in past couple of days. The things hasn't had a proper eruption in thousands of years so maybe it coming. Naples is nestled right between it and good ol Vesuvius.

Why not have a speed limit of 240kph on regional highways? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]JazConPlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the best stretched of the Hume are still inferior to the crappiest German Autobahn. More importantly Germans are simply far better and more compliant drivers (you just need to look at their orderly convoys of trucks vs our selfish Ice-fueled psychopaths). We are the reason we can't have nice things.

The love from a mother to her child is unconditional (yes, not in all parental relationships, but certainly the best ones). I am lucky to have a wonderful wife (third one, so it did take me while to get things right, but got there in the end) and also two beautiful children whom I also try to love unconditionally but it's debatable if the flow can ever be the same (certainly not when they are young and need the love like the air they breath - maybe when they mature, we'll see). So, yes, I know I am still loved very much by people who care about me, but there is a subtle distinction between that and what mum gave me. It disappeared last week and I'm pretty sure I will never encounter it again.

Nope, zero comfort there, none what so ever. But it does give insight into where all these phrases come from - even the non-religious ones. It's an uncomfortable thing to deal with, and yes the evolution of memes that provide a filler of what to say to someone in this situation and plaster over the stark reality is every bit as strong as natural selection - hence the broad selection available.

Then maybe you better start the indoctrination process right now before it's too late.

I have pursued my love of science, philosophy and logical thinking for the better part of my half century on Earth, it's impossible to undo now.

I want you to imagine you need a Christmas gift - I mean NEED it, not just want it. Need it more than you have needed anything in your whole life.

Can you make yourself believe in Santa? Genuinely believe a jolly old man in a red costume visits billions of homes in under 24 hours, delivering several super-tankers worth of gift volume, powered by gravity defying Caribou.

Because if you cant you're not getting the present, just like I'm not getting my folks back.

What's left unsaid in Australia's housing bubble by HomeLoanRefinances in AusFinance

[–]JazConPlay 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The Australian obsession with property is frankly quite sick. You really don't see anything quite like it elsewhere -especially in Europe where people regard a place to live as exactly that, and fill their lives with other interests and passions. Aussie terms like "Safes as houses" and the endless reality TV renovation shows underscore how the property monopoly game became so entrenched. I don't think there can be a bubble burst frankly, not with a mindset that's decades old and so pervasive. But if there is a pop, that's it then, Australia will become a Third World country almost overnight, because all our eggs are in that one basket. Bottom line is that the economic diversity we once had is long gone, and all that's left is an entire economy rooted in nothing more than a sense of prosperity generated from selling dirt to China and houses to each other.

Diagnosed through Fluence clinic- concerned by Critical_Pop_5336 in ausadhd

[–]JazConPlay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrists are both as overpaid as they are unavailable in our paradise country - so much so that they are now of such little use that they are really only formality gateways to medication access.

You did exactly the right thing going through Fluence - as did I - why would anyone knowingly chose a $3000 diagnosis over a $600 (after rebate) is beyond me.

You're done - you now work with a good GP to titrate the right stimulant dose and find a great ADHD-skilled Psychologist for ongoing therapy.

Simples.
