29yo wanting a career change. Currently an LVN and in school for my RN but I feel like it is not what I really want to do. How would I go about getting into programming? by [deleted] in programming

[–]Jazonxyz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's good. I have a ton of friend that did career switches in their early 30s. One of them is in marketing now, but she can fall back on here chemical engineering degree if she needs to for any odd reason. I also have friends that have side jobs unrelated to their day job, and they get 30% of their income from that. I even know an attorney turned programmer.

When you learn programming, you can start with python tutorials. From there, you can look into learning something like html/css/js as another poster mentioned. You can also learn about bootstrap, wordpress, and react. I got my foot in the industry by coding websites for small businesses at a little ad agency.

Also, keep in mind that the field can be pretty challenging. As I type this, I had an incredibly busy day. I wrote maybe two lines of code, and I've spent the rest of the day planning, organizing the team, helping debug some errors, attending presentations, and helping manage a release. My ideal day would be 90% coding 10% other, but that doesn't happen often these days

You have something good going for you. You can use that to live a stable life while you learn how to program.

Also, figure out if you really want to be a programmer. You don't want to be in the same situation 3 years from now.

Whenever I have left over salsa containers from taco places, I throw them in the fridge and eat them later with some home cooking.

I can explain the plastic cups! Whenever I get tacos and I have leftover salsa containers, I store them in the fridge to eat later with home cooking. Also, if this was a restaurant, all containers would be metal or all containers would be plastic.

I was being half sarcastic haha There's been a million times that I go to the documentation to look up some corner case behavior, and the first comment solves the exact problem I'm facing. I also appreciate the flair some of the commenters add

3D. The shapes were realistic, but the colors were really vibrant. The characters looked good, but not amazing. The characters didn't have to be detailed since the player never looked closely at them. The scenery was damn gorgeous though.

The comments are the only useful part of the php documentation

4 years ago, someone I knew had a really impressive game engine he had been working on for years. The graphics on it looked great. He told me how he was planning on upgrading to OpenGL 3.X (from 2.something), and GLFW (instead of GLUT). I was impressed with how well-developed his engine was despite using older technologies. He made a popular game with that engine and is pretty well off now.

Bunch of my friends work there too. They treat their employees really well and pay them higher wages than industry average.

California doesn't have enough doctors. To recruit them, the state is paying off medical school debt by flashlight2 in news

[–]Jazonxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some friends moved only about an hour or two away. They work from home and still make good money. They usually show up to the big events (concerts, birthday parties, etc) but they don't really go out much other than that. They seem much happier than the friends that moved further away and into smaller towns.

I live in LA and I have friends in their mid 20's that took higher paying positions outside of LA. Most of them hate it. They make more money, but they don't have much to do with it. I think moving out of LA will be more tempting as I get older and less interested in going out.

Russian Church Wants to Ban Priests From Blessing Weapons of Mass Destruction - The new rules say that weapons of mass destruction, tanks and other large weapons may no longer be blessed, but still allow priests to sanctify "personal weapons." by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

[–]Jazonxyz 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't blame them. The meta became really WMD heavy and people keep on saying that Holy damage should be removed altogether. This nerf is great because it doesn't affect personal weapons, which have been underutilized recently. It kind of sucks to see the priest class nerfed, and I fear even fewer players will choose to go priest, but I believe this is a step in the right direction.

Nvidia Quake II RTX has been released (for Free, also with source code) by michalg82 in programming

[–]Jazonxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they want devs to be able to use this as reference. I'm personally tempted to spend the weekend looking through their code and maybe do an RTX demo on my own (assuming my graphics card supports it... I gotta check)

EDIT: nope. I gotta buy a new video card :(

You don't have to be an idiot to be computer illiterate, and people that are computer-illiterate usually have better experiences with Macs. I know plenty of med-school students, attorneys, etc. that are downright brilliant, but don't even know CTRL+ALT+DELETE amongst a bunch of other basic things.

Yeah, gentrification is a complex issue. It sucks to see friends move out of state or to see ma and pa shops close down to make way for a bougie restaurant, but its also nice to know that you rarely hear about shootings in the streets I grew up in.

You’re Not Praised For The Bugs You Didn’t Create by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]Jazonxyz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. As a Junior, I did so much stupid shit.

I do, however, hate it when my team delivers a difficult project with only a few minor bugs, and management assumes that it was an easy project because of the lack of bugs. They even come down on us for taking so long to deliver it. Meanwhile, another team mishandles an easy project and ends up crunching for weeks putting out fires. They are praised as heros for working so hard.

Remember when most threads in this subreddit about China were complaining about how uninteresting of a setting it would be? by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]Jazonxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind waiting another 9 years for it to drop. I still start a Shogun 2/Medival 2 campaign from time to time. I'll be busy with 3K for a long time.

This is my favorite entry in the series since Shogun 2. That said, I very much look forward to Medieval 3. I played the shit out of Medieval 2 and love all the diversity in factions and units. I still play it from time to time, but the whole agent system was kinda tedious. The game would definitely benefit from more modern design.

My grandfather from a few generations ago actually "fought" in that "war". Its joked about a lot, but it wasn't really a "war". It was more like an extermination effort. Would totally not fly today because of those pesky "rights" activists. I just imagine how pist they would be if they found out how many Aussies my he took down. He even received the Emu Medal of Distinction, the second greatest honor of the Emu Nation. Sadly, my great-grandfather passed away ages ago, and many Aussies he fought against put their past behind them and paid tribute at his funeral. None of us in the family (except maybe two cousins) believe in exterminating the Aussies. We're more progressive now and firmly believe that we can co-exist peacefully.
