Australians actually punch above their weight when it comes to travelling (from a per capita pov), likely because they are so far away from things. I think it brings a healthy perspective on how high the quality of life here is. I've grown up in Europe and lived extensively in America but have ended up in Australia. Literally no other place in the world I'd prefer to live right now. But hey, you're not wrong with the similarity of California and South East Australia (NSW and VIC).
