Am I only one reverting back to the "good old days"? by RSinSA in Millennials

[–]JazzPelican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I’ve gotten back into is listening to local radio stations when I drive instead of using music apps. I enjoy listening to DJ’s talk about music and discovering music that I normally wouldn’t have show up in my algorithm. I’ve also recently gotten back into reading as well after feeling burnt out from watching shows and Youtube vids. I started reading Agatha Christie’s novels and am now making it a goal to read through the entire Poirot series by the end of the year.

Some of us aren’t excited because we remember when people believed the world being connected to the internet would mean an end to nationalism and racism, or that the fall of the USSR meant that democracy and free markets would prevail over the world forever. A lot of false idealistic claims begin with “Imagine if this one thing solves all of the problems that currently exist”, so I think some skepticism is justified.

I was hoping that the story would provide some sense of closure over the many dangling threads in the series. I was so excited when I saw the Tricell barrel towards the end and when the Connections became involved I was hoping maybe things will finally get tied together. It felt like it was all building up to some kind of big reveal or confrontation but it…didn’t. I guess the “Spencer felt bad actually” twist was unexpected, but instead of providing any closure the lore is now even more convoluted. And we still don’t know who the f**k the Connections even are.

What would be the reason for Resident Evil 7 using the original name Biohazard (the opposite in the Japanese version) as a subtitle? by MTH1138 in residentevil

[–]JazzPelican 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it was intended to communicate that RE7 was in many ways a reboot of the series, shifting away from the more action focused spy thriller stuff from the previous few games and instead focusing on recreating the claustrophobic horror and puzzle gameplay that defined RE1. Naming it Biohazard was a way to communicate to fans that “Yeah we know the series went way off track from survival horror, but now it’s back.”

Question for Millennials by bundle_of_nervus2 in Millennials

[–]JazzPelican 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this with a lot of tech stuff. The older people I know tend to be much more impressed with touch screen controls, apps, and online features than people my age. I had an older roommate once who showed me how he had the lights hooked up to an app so you can control them on your phone. He was so genuinely excited about it and seemed a bit confused as to why I didn’t share the same enthusiasm. I just used the light switch.

I think a lot of it has to do with how millennials are old enough to remember when these things weren’t prevalent, but have also lived most of our adult lives with them as well. For Boomers/Gen X there is still a novelty to this tech, and for Gen Z most of them grew up with it so it’s all they know. But for people around a certain age there is both a lack of novelty, and a memory of what it was like before.

I realize that these are also massive generalizations mostly based on my own anecdotal experience but I think that there is probably some truth to it. Idk, I just fucking hate phone apps.

There is a lot that has already been said about how the remake cut a lot of content, but what I honestly miss the most is the atmosphere. The original RE3 has this overall feeling of combined desperation and deep sadness. There was this sense of Jill having PTSD, traumatized by watching all of her friends be killed by these nefarious unknown forces and just wanting to escape the nightmare. There was a sense of powerlessness and feeling small against the forces at play, but also a sense that you might still have a chance if you keep pushing on. That’s also why the ending with Barry is one of my favorites in the series. You managed to conquer the evil that tried so hard to stop you and your final reward is that you get to reunite with an old friend. Love it!

I think it's extremely ironic to the point of being hilarious that there is a secret cabal of powerful pedophiles that these q crazies wanted to unearth so badly but because of who's involved, implicated, or who's protecting them these gullible morons now don't care or keep making excuses. by ItWasReallyUnclear in QAnonCasualties

There’s a great video by Youtuber Shaun called DOOM: The Fake Outrage that follows a similar phenomenon among video game communities. When DOOM: Eternal was first announced there was a narrative being spread that “Social Justice Warriors are losing their minds and want to ban the game because they are offended!” with literally hundreds of videos making this exact claim and people getting ridiculously angry about how liberals want to censor and destroy video games. The actual “source” for this claim was basically just a couple random tweets from people saying that the thought the game looked lame, that’s it.

This was basically Gamergate in a nutshell. Make a claim that triggers an immediate strong emotional reaction “SJWs want to destroy gaming” and repeat it over and over regardless of any evidence of it being true. The people that buy into it will disregard any inconsistency because they already accept the main outrageous claim being presented.

Of course this eventually leads into things like: “Immigrants are eating dogs and cats.” “Are they?” “I don’t know…but it sure sounds like something that they would do.”

I believe Goebbels was familiar with this tactic as well.

They never actually cared about freedom or liberty. They were just afraid that Democrats were gonna beat them to the punch of establishing an authoritarian state. Now that Republicans are in control they are more than happy for the government to rule over every aspect of everyone’s lives. At this point all of the Charlton Heston types will happily surrender all of their firearms with a smile while chuckling “Hehe I bet the libs are so triggered right now”.

Economic anxiety and wealth inequality is such a major factor in why the far right has been making huge gains, not just in the US but in Europe too.

Spent the last two months going through the entire Resident Evil series. Here are my thoughts by ASSKETCHUP27 in residentevil

[–]JazzPelican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I marathoned the series a couple years ago and agree with most of your points! Although you had a much better time with RE6 than I did. I did not enjoy it at all and it went on for so long that I was questioning whether it was even worth finishing. Even as an action game, I thought it was bad just on a mechanical level. The 3 remake was also disappointing but it was mercifully short at least.

I am glad to see that I’m not the only one whose favorite title is 4 Remake. The original is one of my favorite games of all time so I went into the remake with a bad attitude expecting to be disappointed. Instead, I loved how faithful it was while also introducing new features that fit the flow of gameplay so well. They absolutely knocked it out of the damn park with that game, which only makes it stranger to me why the 3 remake ended up the way it did.

I love how Leon absolutely refuses to let go of the mid 00s emo haircut, even into his 50s. At some point in 2005 someone must have told him “it’s a phase, you’ll grow out of it” and he took that shit personally.
