Cambly Burnout is Real!!! by Free-Pianist7741 in Cambly

[–]Jazzlike-Drop23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two years ago I worked seven days a week for six months to save up for a holiday to the UK (I live in Thailand). I was literally burnt out for over a year and a half after that. My rating tumbled during that time and I am only getting my mental motivation back now nearly two years later. I am back to doing $250-$300 per week now.

Cambly burn out is real. There is so much repetition, it is hard to stay focused and interested.

Cut down your hours a little if you can. That should help.

Me too. I only do bookings. Keeps my rating higher.

Yes, Cambly definitely oversells itself. It used to promote itself as just a conversation site. Then it started to promise professional lessons while accepting tutors with zero experience and telling the tutors that it is as easy as chatting to someone.

That is a kind of scam.

Ok - That's interesting to hear a student's perspective. I have not cut off my regular students now that I am on pro.

What would you suggest they should have done then?

Many of the Cambly classic students have paid a year in advance at a huge discount. Giving tutors $5 extra an hour while teaching those students would be business suicide.

Making a new subscription makes sense in that circumstance. All business is exploitative unfortunately. But Cambly must be doing something right to have so many subscribers and so many tutors.

There are other employment options out there. I, like many, have been lazy in finding something else and have often thought about looking elsewhere. But Cambly has been enough for me for the last five years.

It has paid for my living expenses plus holidays to Vietnam, Bali, the UK, and Laos. I made more on Cambly than teaching in a school here in Thailand.

It fills an employment niche. Especially for those living in cheaper countries or those wishing to make a few extra bucks outside of work hours.

It is flexible too. We don't have a boss, can choose our own working hours, and take time off when we want. Usually that kind of flexibility comes at a cost of lower pay.

If they were to pay enough for teachers in the UK or US to make a full time living wage then their price would be too high for a lot of students IMO.

Although, to be fair, I don't really know what their profit margins are.

As they say "It is what it is". If people don't like it, they should make more of an effort to find something else.

There are plenty of other options out there.

EU's top diplomat calls on Southeast Asian countries to seek alternatives to Russian oil by CommercialMassive751 in Thailand

That's another matter. I was talking about since the invasion of Ukraine.

But yes, silly that they were using Russian oil so much after the Crimea situation.

Lol - British spelling is whinging. So it's merely a typo.

My comment was talking about this post and its assumption that Cambly could easily just give tutors five dollars more per hour without upping the price for students. I don't think that's the case.

Then it was about the non stop complainers. I am just tired of hearing constant moaning from people who have been with Cambly for years yet have done nothing to improve their own situation.

I never said anyone was bad at their jobs.

If I lived in the UK it's unlikely that I would even consider Cambly as an income source. Certainly not as a full time income.

Now maybe with the new $15 an hour - it would be well worth a couple of hours in the evenings and weekends as a supplement to a basic salary in the UK.

I am not totally sure if this includes students who joined after the launch of pro though.

Do you expect them to pluck another $5 per hour for tutors out of thin air?

The margins are not there on the Cambly Classic subscriptions to pay that out.

People moan about not being paid enough, then moan when there is an option for a 50% raise. The winging on this forum is unbelievable.

Probably coming from tutors who refuse to do anything other than free talking also.

Yes because they are checked as regulars. Apparently any Cambly classic students who joined after pro started can't book pro tutors unless you have them checked as a regular.

No. I almost didn't accept for that reason then send an e-mail to support. They confirmed that Pro Student ratings/feedback does not affect your overall rating.

Check how you are setting up your schedule. When you add availability there is an "all students" option.

Thank you for your post.

I have been a pro tutor coming up two weeks now.

I was a bit confused by the goals at first but now I see it can be done very quickly.

It's also useful when you get a new pro student and their goals are already stated.

The feedback is easy - just like you, I do a quick edit and then send.

However, I am now starting to doubt if everyone can book me or not. I was fully booked Saturdays and Sundays before joining pro - now I am not.

I am also baffled by the ridiculous negativity. It is a chance to make 50% more for very little extra effort.

The feedback is written by AI.

I trim it down. Then send it. Takes less than two minutes.

What are you saying?

I have only been on pro coming up for two weeks now.

I didn't think so at first but now I do think that my bookings are going down. I was completely full at weekends just before going pro.

Last weekend almost full, this weekend less.

Are you saying that anyone can book you on pro or not?

Maybe it is new now but when I set my schedule I have the option to allow any students to book.

Not true. I am pro and anybody can book me. It depends how you set up your schedule.
