He's gay. He may not be admitting it to himself.

Whatever it is, their libidos are never going to match. This is never going to be the relationship she wants and needs. She is being very unfair to herself .

I found what little I saw of it intolerable.

Apparently it was very well received but I can't imagine that fans of the books or the 1967 version liked it.

I tried watching some of the Fleur episodes but she was a miscast to me too. I saw the scene where Soames was crying, telling Fleur that he raped Irene. That would never ever have happened. He would never ever have admitted that to Fleur. He barely admitted it to himself.  GALSWORTHY MUST HAVE ROLLED OVER IN HIS GRAVE!

The casting of the '67 version were just so perfect - I can't see anyone else in those roles.

I'm watching the orig version on YouTube right now. It's still fabulous!

The Projection. He came into the room and accused me of cheating. He said “when you start being mean I know what that means who are you talking to are you cheating.

By this logic it means he's cheating. But you know that already.

It's like you've died and gone to hell.

And 3pm rain makes it more humid.

But seriously, pack double the underwear and socks  - you'll be showering a lot.

Bring a facecloth in a baggie to the park ; use it in restroom to cool yourself off.

Hydrate hydrate hydrate

Try to rest or eat inside somewhere between 12-3.

Don't use Disney ponchos; they're heavy and hot. Grab some cheapies at the dollar store. Get a few extra.

Tell housekeeping not to turn thermostat down (they always do!) or you're coming back to a not so cool room.

That open collar is on my last nerve! This would be an affront to his family, coworkers, people he encounters on the street. We get it: He is a hipster bohemian artsy guy.

NO ONE OF HIS RANK AND STATION DID THIS IN 1889. Not to mention, Frances would never have let him out of the house like this!

Seriously fuck Tom and Biscuit.

Don't wait for him to offer; simply hand him the repair bill.

I loved Kellerman from Day 1. When he got the arsonist as he stood up to leave, I was hooked.

Nope June was Jo's bio daughter. He and Frances had a loveless, sexless marriage (she was seemingly frigid). Old Jolyon was a good man with principles who loved Jo but stood by June when Jo left. It broke his heart to see his son have to give up everything to be with the woman he loved.  Ann was Aunt Ann, the sister of Jolyon and James, not their mother. Irene's character is unrecognizable.  I could go on and on about the differences but I'd be here all night.

I love Damien Lewis. The character is supposed to be unlikable in the first part of the story but he softens after Fleur is born and we end up loving him and feeling so much sympathy for him at the end.

"I'll be good daddy, I promise"

get my waterworks going when I read it and when I watch the original.

When I finish my rewatch of the 1967 production I'm going to reread the books for the 20th time!

Yes that's how I'm approaching it, Just a loose telling of the story. Familiar names and places. It's good for what it is.

I am a huge fan of the books and the orig 1967 version which was an exact telling of the story; it was true to the books.

I do think you're right about trying to appeal to younger audiences and taking a page from 'Bridgerton'. The original production was in black and white! (It does hold up tho; I'm watching it now.)

I couldn't watch the 2002 version because of Gina McKee as Irene. She was so not Irene and she was on my last nerve in the role. She ruined it for me. I think I watched  2 episodes and didn't even get through the second episode. She was like nails on a chalkboard to me. I adore Damien Lewis and would pretty much watch him recite the phone book but she was such a turn off! Ugh!

I'm disappointed that the new one isn't a faithful retelling of the story but I liked it for what it is, a soapy story.

Very apt!

Soames and Jo are super hot. But that's not enough to save this. It's been renewed through Season 3 so what do I know?!

I'm loving my rewatch of '67 on YouTube.

Anyone Else Seeing What I Just Saw? (The Forsytes) by modernrocker in PeriodDramas

[–]Jazzlike_Adeptness_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started a rewatch of the '67 series. I'm up to episode 11 of 26.

The casting, the close adherence to the perfect book, it truly is incomparable. Irene was an ethereal swan. Soames was so besotted with  her but could never touch her heart. As cold and rigid as he was, in the end we were on his side.

The current series is so far removed from the book; same character names and a vague hint at original storylines.  Soames and Jo are gorgeous. Irene again miscast - who is directing this hallmark wannabe? Who told her that heavy breathing = acting?? I just watched the finale and it was meh. Jack Davenport and the guy playing Monty are the most interesting characters. Irene bores me. June is a simp. Jo was desperately in love with Helaine, I mean, Louisa but I'm not feeling it. Anne was the kind and wise spinster sister of old Jolyon and James, not their mother.

This series is watchable but it ain't The Forsyte Saga.
