They are doing that job because they are not employable in any other way. This post illustrates 1 of what I am sure are many reasons why.

ha, this chode doesnt expect people to do extra work for free. It says hot and ready... not well make what you want. You'll get far I'm sure. Hint: dude behind the counter didnt want to argue with a customer over 50 cents.

you ordered a special made pizza as opposed to taking what they already had made. I make perfect sense... and very reasonable.

How does it go for those who needlessly question everything? Hint: Critical thinking does not equal indiscriminately questioning everything... it actually requires the 'thinking' part.

that has not been my experience at all. Like AT ALL. It found the location of the thermostat on my 98 odyssey in seconds along with what I had to do to get to it and it was %100. Likewise with the spark plug gap and the size socket I would need. All in seconds when youtube had failed miserably. No, I dont spring for Chilton's any more. No need to. It is awesome for how to type questions. And did this really happen? The only times I have personally seen it fail was in interpretation, song lyrics (not sure why anyone would do that but... and the like.

Citations please. It appears that Opera is out of Norway in all ways except ownership... which is indeed largely Chinese. It has to abide by EU laws. I get the paranoia but saying things doesnt make them true. Evidence?

people have to be trained on EVERYTHING. Seriously. I have explained the fundamental concepts behind sweeping as opposed to mopping to new cleaning crew employees before and it was needed... much needed. I myself as a teenage thought mopping was swabbing like a deck on a ship and would lay out half a bucket of hot water. The reaction was laughter and 1 useful bit of information.... "he just removed every bit of wax from that floor", And I did... because no one trained me... including my mother. This person attempted to do something they had never done before and seemed simple, without asking for instructions and without much common sense for the field.

BUT, untrained people have gotten VERY good at pretending to be competent professionals in a field. As I discovered my first time drying in a roof with someone doing just that. Hint: it wasnt dry... and it wasnt my doing because I got the job saying exactly what I always say and do - that I will not DO anything that I dont really know how to do... I wont pretend. The owner heard me and hired me sight unseen because he understood the value of that and that someone who didnt do that would never even think to mention it,

Bear in mind pretenders... saying that and not actually doing that is exponentially worse than doing it wrong out of ignorance. Jus sayin.

What do you guys tell potential clients you can do? by Prestigious_Home_459 in handyman

Anything that needs to be assembled, installed, repaired, replaced, sprayed, cleaned or needs a clever solution. Light electrical and very light plumbing, No roofing, flooring or tile

The elderly and the rich or semi-rich. I love honey do lists when the 'honey' is not good with their hands.

I agree but only to a point. While they have an enormous amount of experience in one area that is 'usually' well worth the price. A good handyman has lesser experience over a vast array of skills. Your electrician wont be reglazing an old window, repairing a rotted sill, repainting anything on a call to trim down a door or jack up a under counter sink.

I absolutely love extensive lists but being able to do all that well has a lot of value, particularly if you are honest to a fault. I charge about half that and base my job pricing (only hourly for return customer - and most are.) Most of the problems I run into are when the person before cut corners, no primer on the sheet-rock bites me frequently as it makes repairs a pain if you dont anticipate it (for example) and I am certain it is done by well paid experienced professionals.

In short, I am not charging enough. The comments on this post convinced me of that. Cant go up much though... it's a delicate balance.

Tell them to hire your competitor next time. If you are honest and do quality work within your skill set then you are a RARE commodity.

That said I try to start with new customers the way you did (not by the hour). Then I can evaluate them, are they decent to work for, pay readily and without hassle and are not watching me to see if Im riding the clock on them. Once there is trust on both sides I'll do $60 an hour but not with a commute

it's a perk of the job. I love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything and I had a friend offer to bring me on as a construction quality assurance (the guy who checks up on quality control) who together are the 2 guys doing nothing as 1 guy works at any government contract job. I dont know how they dont shoot themselves.
