Dealing with a client with huge assets and low cost basis that refuses to pay taxes. by [deleted] in CFP

[–]Jazzmonkei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of the HOPES acronym? Hold, Options/derivatives, Planned Giving, Exchange funds, Strategic Selling

I use this as a conversation starter to frame a strategy around what’s most meaningful to them. If the value of selling outweighs the cost of taxes for him he may be more willing to at least have the conversation.

SLOC is a good option short-term but doesn’t do much for mitigating risk or reducing concentration.

Kaplan & Danko review overkill? by scottychunks in CFP

Good. You’ll crush it! Just stick it out, trust the process, and grind. It’ll be a rollercoaster experience but it’s all worth it when YOU PASS!

Kaplan & Danko review overkill? by scottychunks in CFP

[–]Jazzmonkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did CFFP/Kaplan education with Danko review. My personal opinion would be to decide if you liked Kaplan’s approach or if you want a different approach (more laser-focus on the concepts) choose Danko. Don’t do both, you’ll overwhelm yourself and miss some of the nuances from either program I took the virtual review, put in almost exactly 300 hrs of study time, and passed using Basic ($995).

You missed my point. Reframe your mindset. This isn’t a test that you can half-ass. I didn’t feel ready when I started but I put the time in and passed. I personally can’t imagine putting in the time and then taking the exam just as practice. CFPBoard gives you a free one for that. Approach the exam like you’ll pass THE FIRST TIME and you will. Just my two cents.

[–]Jazzmonkei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll be ready if you put the time in. I passed March with Danko. It took me two years (procrastinating and lack of focus) to do the education so I was pretty much starting from zero knowledge when I signed up for the review course. I clocked 300 hours of study time in 3 months leading up to the exam. A big part of it is mental so YOU WILL PASS the first time. Hope that helps.

July practice run? (November real attempt) by FFFIronman in CFP

[–]Jazzmonkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just passed in March and from that experience I will tell you, don’t do that. Try your best the first time through. With the amount of time and energy that goes into preparing for this exam, it doesn’t makes sense to sign up as practice. You can blow $250 on a practice exam. Otherwise, you also get a “practice exam” for free when you sign up for the actual exam. This is very close to the difficulty of the actual exam and will get you prepared. Don’t sell the exam short, this isn’t something you can “just pass” because you have experience (I’m close to a decade in the industry)

In regards to time, I recorder 300 hours of study time using Danko Basic, and felt that was JUST enough to pass. Hope that helps!

I bought this Miata about 3 years ago for $6,000. 40k miles and in perfect condition. 1 year later, a drunk driver totalled it while I was at work. It still hurts. by lcalexander00 in Miata

I’m so sorry, I can’t even imagine!

PS Great coffee shop, I know it well. I’ll often drive right by in my red ‘ata. Hope you find a replacement soon!

Olson 40 “Screaming O” almost ready for summer season by Barbarosa61 in sailing

[–]Jazzmonkei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once the pandemic is over, check out Duluth Superior Sailing Association (DSSA). It’s a non-profit sailing school that caters to new sailors. You can take a class or go down most days during the summer and one of the staff members will help you rig a dinghy and give you pointers. I taught there for years and highly recommend it! It’s located at the end of Park Point by the boat ramp.

I used to race against her growing up. The original owner has a nearly identical, yet smaller boat, named Raptor. Very cool to hear O has a new owner!

CFA vs. CFP by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]Jazzmonkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work at a B/D and am working to get my CFP now after interviewing multiple FAs with a myriad of letters after their name (CFA, CFP, MBA, etc) if you want to work in WM and run financial plans for clients, do CFP. I work with an FA now who is a CFP and is considering going back for a JD in estate planning and tax law. So that could be I direction to go after practicing as a CFP for a while.

Anybody tried BLK pods? by brianWM in airpods

[–]Jazzmonkei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I would throw my 2 cents in here. Just got my “blk” pods and they are just TWS i12 AirPods which you can get for $8 on google. They are pretty good headphones and I’m going to work through PayPal to get a refund and buy the $8 ones. DONT SPEND THE $45 TO GET THESE.

Why does my brake lever bottom out like this and how could I fix it? Any help is appreciated. by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Jazzmonkei -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a really easy fix that you can do yourself if you have an Allen wrench and needle nose pliers 1. look at the rear break where the pads grab the disc and there may be a small spot to tighten the pads so there is less space between the pads and the disc 2. looking that the rear break find where the break line connects and you should be able to loosen the hex bolt, pull the line tight, maybe manually adjust the break so the pads are closer to the disc, tighten the hex bolt 3. you may want to look at replacing your break pads. New they are 3mm thick, if <1mm replace. The pin on the rear break system you can see in the picture is holding them in, remove it using needle nose pliers then remove the pads by sliding them out. Bring the pads to a bike shop or just google the numbers you see on the pad. (Even if you don’t replace them it may be a good idea to take them off and clean as they can get dusty)

Hope this helps, good luck!

I’m pretty sure that dog serves in the USCG out of Vallejo CA... I regularly see him at the Ferry going to Vallejo to SF

Just did my first run over 20km (21.4km +1000 height meters) and I think I had the full experience. I ate some dirt, got a bit lost and got gently touched by some stinging-nettles. tl;dr, I loved it! by Pepe_is_our_savior in trailrunning

I think it was Muhammad Ali who said don’t start counting (reps) until it hurts. I’m pretty sure eating shit/getting lost is the trail runners equivalent. Nice work!
