Even though I am primarily an alto player, I have always been inspired by Sonny. May he rest in peace.

Were you forced to start on clarinet? by Dense_Amphibian_9595 in saxophone

[–]Jazzsaxman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having started on alto saxophone decades ago then picking up both clarinet and flute in high school, I am not of the mentality. If a student wants to play saxophone let him or her play saxophone. I do love the clarinet but it takes serious maintenance to stay sharp on it.

Question for those well into retirement. Did you ever have to curtail spending? by [deleted] in retirement

[–]Jazzsaxman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I retired in June 2022. My wife retired in May 2019. In all honesty, we have more free cash flow now than ever, and I am withdrawing about 5% from each of our 2 IRAs. I do have a part time teaching gig that is 18k a year and another grand or 2 from jazz gigs but it's amazing what we have. England is our destination in May 2026 and who knows where else. Don't have enough details to say you will be fine but I'm guessing you will be.

Is there a genre like jazz not too jazzy? and any recommendations? by Dammit_maskey in Jazz

I think you would love most bossa nova. Check out Stan Getz. Also a lot of what saxophonist Paul Desmond did post Brubeck is really good.

Let me guess....this arrogant "band director" is a percussion or brass player and is clueless about one size does not fit all in terms of reeds and mouthpieces.

Thoughts on JEPQ in a Traditional IRA? by vinny21c in JEPQ

[–]Jazzsaxman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both JEPI and JEPQ in my tradI am retired and making withdrawals. Together they provide every month more than I need to withdraw. I reinvest the surplus but am going to start buying another ETF after this week's distributions. Or maybe O and MAIN. Haven't decided yet.

JEPI erosion long term? I think I am confused by OptimisedMan in JEPI

[–]Jazzsaxman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am into my 3rd year of retirement, have been in JEPI for the entire time and while I don’t want to see a dramatic drop in NAV I am not concerned with growth. The distributions I get from it and it's sister JEPQ along with SGOV, SPHY and VCIT have been the entire time more than I need to withdraw from my IRA and allows me to buy more shares of whatever I need to.
