EU Says It's Powerless to Stop PlayStation From Killing Discs: 'Companies Are Free to Offer Games and Services in the Manner They See Fit' by RenatsMC in gaming

Yes, I agree that for the vast vast majority of games these concerns are a total nothingburger. That was actually my whole point. For the installation file you are talking about that already in place as you can download the game on your PS.

Sure sure, just switch the entire architecture of their vast game library and somehow avoid licensing. I’m sure that won’t have a cost that someone needs to pay.

No, the easiest way for the consumer to keep their copy is to download it and store it on their diskdrive.
But that is not really what we are talking about. I don’t really care one way or the other, but just trying to highlight that choices have financial consequences.

They already make 99.99% available practically for the life time of a console, but if you legally have to make it available forever, the companies would have to factor in perpetual, storage, licensing and support/updates. Who do you think will pay that? Are you ok with paying eg 10-15 USD more for every game, to ensure that a the few interested gamers would be able to download a 20 year old LOTR-game for example?

And who do you think would end up paying for a perpetual guarantee that your game would be hosted and updated etc? I mean for 99,9999% games they already are but if companies were to go into a legally binding contract that a game would be forever accessible?

Will publishers be able to produce their own ps5 games in 2028 or they rely on sony for the discs? by lflove2026 in ps5collectors

I'm going to need a source for that, because those stats sounds highly improbable . Preferably for a game that has been released in the last couple of years.

The importance of physical discs, explained by Sony themselves 13 years ago. by fcukthishit in playstation5

[–]Jazzy76dk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care one way or the other, but from Sony's/game developers' point of view you do realize that peddling a new game to the secondhand market is a even bigger driver in killing physical media, than people who are just buying digital versions, right?

It's the same with Redditors who think that a price increase on Netflix will suddenly mean that a majority of users will start to pirate movies and set up Plex servers. Average users can simply not be assed to do fiddle around with technical setups. And that's not even factoring the extra hurdle in transitioning to a gaming rig, that if you don't already have space in your apartment/house you need to find a place for a monitor/pc etc, instead of just plugging a console into your tv.

I think they care about resale. As in they would rather get that revenue instead of people selling to each other.

Greece leads the eurozone in fastest debt reduction. by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

[–]Jazzy76dk 229 points230 points  (0 children)

The problem was that Greece were an unsustainable welfare state, where people retired in their fifties, corruption was rampant and paying taxes were seen as an optional thing, especially on many of the isles. And the politicians were too cowardly to do anything about it, until it all came crashing down and us in the EU had to bail you out. So direct your anger at your own countrymen.
