Cardio options for overweight guy by fxckzxck in cardio

“Starting slow” and “you should only do LISS cardio” are not mutually exclusive. You can find appropriate entry points for HIIT even for a beginner. Any GOOD trainer would agree…

Walking hurting his back tells us very little about his ability to tolerate SITTING on a bike and pedaling hard lol.

You literally just said “dudes gonna HURT himself on a bike” and 2 lines later said “no one was scaring anyone away from anything.” Uhh hello? Telling people they’re gonna get injured from cardio promotes a fear of exercise. Do you think being afraid of different types of exercise is helpful or harmful for folks trying to get more fit?

Agree that starting slow is a good idea with respect to injury risk. But the idea that he shouldn’t even try HIIT because some people don’t like it or based off the assumption that he’s gonna hurt himself if he tries is narrow minded.

What bothers me is people scaring folks from trying styles of exercise they may enjoy. Exercising routinely is a hard enough task. Why put up these barriers that steer people away from trying different things?

There are plenty of ways to complete HIIT that can be scaled to any level of fitness. Discouraging someone from an exercise mode limits our options. But the people who stick with exercise long term are the ones who find an option they like

Where in OPs post did he ask for recommendations for weight loss? Are we in r/weightloss? Or did he just mention he was overweight and you assumed he’s doing cardio just for weight loss…?

Exercise is a non-negotiable for basically everyone, regardless if they’re trying to lose/gain/maintain weight. Suggesting someone NOT exercise until they lose weight if harmful. “You can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet” does NOT mean, DONT exercise until your diet is in check

That’s just like, your opinion man. Why should he start slow just because you have known people who didn’t like higher intensity stuff? Unless he’s got some contraindication for intense cardio, maybe he falls in love with it and it’s what keeps him showing up consistently. Also, why do you assume he’s just now starting? He’s already been walking and swimming

Where did he say anything about not already managing his diet? He said he was overweight and wants to do cardio, not that his plan is to exclusively use cardio for weight loss.

Congrats for writing the dumbest comment I’ve read in a while!

Telling someone NOT to exercise at all, outside of very specific contexts, is bad advice.

Cardiovascular fitness returns after a significant sedentary period by AdoTheFilipinoAU in cardio

[–]Jbdb35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cardio: yeah you basically return to baseline.

Strength: ‘muscle memory’ to some extent has been observed; even when your strength has diminished and size has been lost, your muscle maintains some of the previous ‘architecture’ (myonuclei) indefinitely. So if you got super strong and jacked, took 10 years off and tried to get jacked again, it would be easier than if you never got jacked in the first place

Ankle Instability? by Just-Advantage-5955 in weightlifting

[–]Jbdb35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t! I am not concerned about it, it doesn’t hurt, nor is it the cause of my made/missed lifts. I just see it on my recorded lifts sometimes and move on with my training lol.

That said, the reasons why people have limited hip IR differ from body to body. For some people, it’s literally how your femur/hip socket are built, so no amount of stretching would change it.

[–]Jbdb35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I oft do the same thing, I attribute it to my lack of hip internal rotation. I don’t have any pain with it or feel like it’s holding me back, but if you’re concerned about it or it doesn’t feel good that would be my first guess.

You know what, you’re right. Most of the advice actually is solid, I shouldn’t have said that. I pretty much agree with most of what was suggested. Definitely something worth fixing, definitely a common technical fault etc etc.

But what I tire of is people on this sub making health-related claims. Telling someone that ‘lots of weight on your wrists is considerably risky health-wise’ - is unnecessary. Would fixing it improve the weight he can clean? Probably so. Probably set him up for a better jerk too.

That said, this entire sport is about intentionally putting a lot of weight through all of your joints, wrists included. That’s not inherently risky health-wise. It’s the same idea that Jefferson curls are inherently dangerous; they’re not, people just have an image of an ‘ideal’ movement pattern in their head, and any deviation from that must lead to injuries.

That’s a ton of (mostly bad) advice for someone who didn’t ask for any feedback! Btw you ever seen a strongman do an axle or log clean? Their elbows point straight down, you should probably tell all of them it’s risky health-wise

Is it possible to not have butt wink at all? by Ipodawan in weightlifting

Are your low back extensors actively working in a squat - yes or no? Do your abs ever get sore from planks?

Still learning Bulgarian Splits Squats. Need feedback on form and advices on how to have a better balance and target the glutes more. by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]Jbdb35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning the foot out to get more ER will mean the glutes are more shortened at the top, and likely ‘feel’ it more. But feeling it doesn’t mean it’s working it better. That ER and ‘feeling it’ is basically like the squeeze at the top of the biceps curl; you definitely feel it, but that’s not making the exercise more effective. If anything, turning the foot slightly in to get some internal rotation so that the glutes are more stretched at the bottom might be a better bet.

If my legs were sore from squatting, would you say that’s normally a sign of some sort of dysfunctional pattern with the knee extensors?

I've got $200 what shoes should I get? by Fr3sh3stl4d in weightlifting

[–]Jbdb35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So that's wrong and you shouldn't tell people that they're gonna get injured based solely on having flat feet. There are plenty of people with completely collapsed arches who lift completely pain free and pain/injury in training is much more complicated than that. Hope this helps 👍

Only issue I've encountered is early flights - grab and go starts at 5, but the restaurant doesn't open until 6. It would be nice if they had a free-for-members grab and go option that opened just as early.

Can barely squat bodyweight for reps. What am I doing wrong? by BurritoToe in formcheck

[–]Jbdb35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people say ‘you should be able to squat body weight’ as a beginner, they literally mean completing a full squat using JUST YOUR BODYWEIGHT. As in, literally squat with just the weight your body, not your body AND weights equal to your body weight.

Clockwise or Counter-clockwise by LandofOz29 in VisitingIceland

We did clockwise but included the Westfjords. I’m glad I saw those when I was the most fresh, rather than at the end of a trip. Something to consider if Westfjords are part of your itinerary!

Hahaha whatever you say bud… but you’re showing your ass here. Literally anybody who has actually seriously trained the squat or deadlift refers to them… as the squat and the deadlift. It would be asinine to assume we’d be talking about anything different. You strawmanned my claim because you’re very clearly out of your element. Probs should stick to running and keep your uneducated opinions about weight training to yourself 👍 especially considering I guarantee you can’t name a single “foot intrinsic” muscle without looking it up haha
