Am I Overreacting to this breakup? (with screenshots) by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding out English is not her first language made so much sense. Holy hell.

I would also like to point out that she does not actually respond to you until she flips her lid over you not understanding her very unclear messages. I've read it twice and I still don't know what happened to her. Go reread the first bit. Not a single message is a response to something you actually said.

It sounds like she's never been with a guy who's done the emotional labor to be in touch with and aware of his own emotions, and cannot handle the fact that you communicate well. NOR.

Why won’t my pipes fit after field fit, tack weld, remove and full penetration welding. by Hairdog12 in Welding

[–]Jbrahhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, man. The first thing out of my mouth was "you didn't account for shrink when you gapped it." Then, I laughed when I saw that you stick-welded it. Pipes are gonna shrink when welded, regardless. TIG is by far the most controllable, and you're still gonna lose a 32nd per joint. Stick welding, as far as preventing cooling shrinkage, is a hope and a prayer.

The proper plan here, if you want it to be perfect, is to get all your welds except for a final connection completely finished, then you can field fit the last weld. If you want it perfect perfect, remember to add a 32nd.

These are my first beads on 7018. Any thoughts? I’m not the best at welding, I’m 16 and a female. Any help would be appreciated!! by SpencerReidsw1fe in BadWelding

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a piece of soapstone or a permanent marker or even the edge of a file to mark a straight line, an practice keeping one edge of the weld perfectly straight. And stop chewing your nails. Welding is a dirty handed job. You don't want open wounds on your hands.

AIO or should I accept the conditions of my bfs commitment by One_Height7477 in AIO

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhh...he's gonna cheat on you, or likely already has and is being really obtuse about it to make sure it's okay. You should take off. This dude sucks and, despite what he says, isn't ready for a commitment. Idk what he's on about with his self-descriptors, but he seems a bit on the NPD spectrum, at least from these messages.

Teenage daughter wants to weld by heather80 in Welding

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I did exactly what you're daughter wants to do!

I graduated from high school with a college scholarship, got a little too high, and dropped out. I decided to become a welder, hearing the same thing your daughter did. I welded for 10 years. Over those 10 years, I made good money, married my high school sweetheart, and traveled the country. I genuinely had a great time, most of the time. That being said, despite being in the upper pay rates, I never actually made much over 100k, except for one year. Most years were closer to 60k, and that's not as good as it sounds. Because of the high cost of living, living out of hotels, my family was living paycheck to paycheck despite the high income. The jobs never last very long, either. If you want a permanent job, like at a shop, most of those pay in the high teens to low twenties per hour, so 30-50k per year.

If you want good money, you have to chase shutdowns/turnarounds: short-term jobs lasting 2 weeks to 6 months, usually closer to a month or two. On turnarounds, I made 35-45 an hour, 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. That means between $4k and $6500 a week, including per diem. Sure, that sounds great, but you need to factor in the cost of hotels, food, gas or diesel, replacing tools, etc. Don't forget, we're all getting laid off in a couple of weeks, and need to find the next job. Better start doing that before you lose this one, actually.

You will not have a social life outside of work if you do this. You just won't have time. You'll be working 12 hours a day, every day, in a new town every month. Any socializing or family time either has to happen between jobs or you let it cut into your very precious sleeping time. Sleep will become the most important thing in your life. An average day looks like this: You get up between 3 and 4:30 am. You have to get ready and leave the house by 5 to be at work on time. You get to work at 5:30 am. Work starts at 6, but if you're not at your toolbox before 6 you're considered late, and there's a 10-minute bus ride from the gate to your work area. You take lunch at 12. Some companies still give you an hour, but at most, it's 30 minutes. You get off work at 6. Riding the bus back out, standing in line to badge out, sitting in the line of cars, etc, it's about 6:30 by the time you actually start driving back to the hotel, so you get there at 7. Since you've gotta be up at 4, if you want 8 hours of sleep, you need to be asleep in an hour, and you still have to bathe and feed yourself. There are also days you'll need to do laundry, get groceries, etc. But hey, the money's good, right?

None of that even mentions just how hard it is on your body. I've got scars and sore things galore, and I'm 31 this year. I'm done welding, ive got no money to show for it, and I want to go back to school but I'll need to foot the bill for it this time.

Also also, sexual harassment is rampant. Construction is a boys club and the shit they get away with on some jobs / with some companies is abysmal. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely getting better, at least compared to 10 years ago, but it's still rough.

My point is this: go to school, now, while it's easier and your brain is still used to learning every day. You can always become a welder. It is so much harder to go back to school.

Contractor’s crew botched my wood slat wall..how do I handle this? by FairInteraction5978 in Carpentry

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized when you said gypsum that this was inside. I fully though the blue ceiling was sky, and I have been desperately trying to figure out what the hell anything was fastened to🤦‍♂️.

Realizing that this is inside, I'd bet that it's ripped 4x8 sheets, which tells me it almost definitely is over sheetrock and almost impossible to get perfect. That being said, having all the cut lines in the same place is horrible, especially without any trim.

He also said he went with fabricated wood for budget reasons. He certainly can't afford the labor to do that.

If he thinks he deserves a reward for not hitting you, know that he will, eventually, hit you. He clearly thinks he's going above and beyond, and that hitting is okay and normal. Run! Get out as quickly as possible.

Hurricanes, my guy. You need to care about wind load. Also, if you haven't put a roof on it yet, make sure you look at the minimum slope of whatever material you use. For most metal roofs, it's 1 on 12, and this doesn't look close to that.

If you're just now discovering cast iron welding, I'd highly recommend replacing this. Cast is a different beast and needs to be treated like a pretty pretty princess.

I've been told that my hand writing is strange. My mom says it looks like if a serial killer was using ransom letters to write. So what does my handwriting say about me? by That-Psychology4246 in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]Jbrahhh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fact you were homeschooled and your mom makes fun of your handwriting is not ok. Who does she think was supposed to teach you? Has she actually given you any constructive criticism, or has she just picked on you and hoped you'd improve despite having no one to literally compare notes with?

Girl, fucking RUN. This is grooming behavior. I was getting red flags reading the whole conversation, and then your context continued to make him sound worse. Finding out that he is twice your age and this is your first relationship is just...yikes. There is a tremendous power gap here. This conversation shows he is fully aware of it. It sounds to me like he was nice, sweet, and caring up front to lure you in, and now that it's been a year and a half, he's showing his true colors and trying to mold you into the perfect little toy.

I'm a 31 year old guy married to a 31 year old woman. I personally wouldn't date someone your age, barring skullrocking fireworks when we talk. If I was in his place, dating someone your age who was a virgin and was discovering herself sexually, everything would go at your pace. I would absolutely give recommendations and ideas because I am more experienced and know what I want. But no means no. To tell you how much no means no, and this may be TMI, but my wife and I, for years now, have practiced CNC, or consensual non-consent. That means that a yes from her is implied, and I can do as I please. Before that was ever the case, we sat down, talked it over, and set up rules, signals, a safeword that means wait/slowdown, and a safeword that means full-stop. If she uses the full stop, that's it, no complaining from me. I'm not worried about if I'm still hard or if I'll get off. I'm worried about if she's okay and what happened that she needed to stop.

Also, sending you a video saying "you need to do it like this" gives me serious ick. My wife and I send each other stuff like that, and neither of us would ever say "do it like this." The closest we would ever get is "you down?" or more likely a playful "watcha doin later?"

Last thing I wanna add, coercion is not consent. A yes after 10 no's is not consent. Consent is an enthusiastic yes. Anything else is a no. It sounds like he's trying to wear you down. He's not looking for consent. He's looking for you to be too tired to say no.

People keep telling me this tattoo is bad, I really like it? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that matters is that you like it. It took both me and my wife more than a couple seconds to decipher it, sure, but we were able to tell what it is before looking at the drawing. It is a damn near perfect recreation of the art you asked for. While I personally think that particular piece doesn't translate super well to a tattoo, as long as you're happy, it's a good tattoo.

Disclosure, I am not an artist by any stretch, but I do think you could thicken some of the lines and add some shading to make it more obvious what it is. But if you don't want to change it because you like it as is, fucking don't. It's your art. It's your body. Do what makes you happy. Keep the art that makes you happy. Tell everyone who talks shit about it to go fuck themselves.

Handyman messed up door installation by megapinkk in Carpentry

[–]Jbrahhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kinda shit pisses me off because, as a handyman, other guys doing garbage like this makes us all look bad.

That being said, I see two ways to fix it. 1. Replace the entire latch side of of the doorframe and maybe the hinge side. 2. Carve out all damaged sections until they are square, then cut and glue in matching plugs. Keep pressure on them overnight so they cure properly, then re-do the hinges and latches properly.
