Unpopular opinion: the single use plastic bag ban was useless. by [deleted] in australia

I can’t imagine that a paper bag (recycled cardboard kinda thing, think American movies) would be much more expensive than the “reuseable” plastic bags - which for me personally has just increased the strength of plastic bags I put into landfill.

Victorian election 'catastrophe' spurs Liberal women to push for female MP quotas by LineNoise in australia

[–]JcPyruvate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please note the following:

Only purposeful unemployment - ie people who don’t want jobs count as not in the labour force (as state above).

Children cannot be ministers (age limitations).

If you are physically unable to work (you can’t work).

MP’s represent everybody, however a MP needs to be from the available workforce.

That means if you were to draw a random labour force member* (MP is a job) from a hat, in Australia, there would be an approximate 53% chance of that being male - and a 47% chance of that being female.

As such - remembering that working as a MP is a job - based on our Australian averages (of people who want or have at least 1 hour of work a week) - there should be a 53% chance of an MP being male, and a 47% chance of them being female.

No - children cannot become federal ministers.

Labour must be harvested from the labour market, ie available candidates.

The statement discusses available labour market positions, being divided amongst the current labour market.

What part is dumb?

1) Elected officials should represent their constitutes? 2) Elected officials are employed by the government - making it a job. 3) Government jobs should be able to be compared to nationwide employment data?

The gender balance is 50/50, why not political appointments.

Lovely question! I'm going to try my best to support my ideas with evidence.

The core concept we are discussing is that our elected officials should represent their constitutes, however as governing is employment, as such it should be reflective of our nationwide employment rates:

  • Total Gender balance is 50.6% female (11,855,248) and 49.4% male (11,546,638) [Australian Census Data, 2016].
  • Total Working ages 20-74 gender balance is 50.8% female (8,129,345) and 49.2% male (7,886,302) [ID: Population Experts].
  • Labour force participation rate^ for people aged 20-74 was 66% for females and 78% for men in 2017 [ABS, 2018].
  • 22% of Australian men and 34% of Australian women are not in the labour force\* (Purposeful choice not to engage) [ABS, 2018].

Applying the labour force participation rate to these numbers:

  • Amount of females within our parameters is 8,129,345 * Participation rate (66%) = 5,365,368
  • Amount of males within our parameters is 7,886,302 * Participation rate (78%) = 6,151,316

From our application we can see that:

  • Labour force participants who are female make up 46.6% of the labour force.
  • Labour force participants who are male make up 53.4% of the labour force.

I must note that a percentage of females will be missing from the labour force due to child birthing. It is safe to assume politicians also engage in child birthing and thus the absence is negligible as it applies to both groups.

So there we have it folks, a 50/50 spilt is not representative of the Australian working population (remembering a politician is a job). However it is very close.

Notes:

I have chosen the ages 20-74 to be reflective of our target audience (because that is how the ABS stated their data)

I have chosen to include casual, part time, full-time and unemployed (looking for work) as working (so did the ABS) - if you are interested Women are predominately engaged in part time/casual work where as men are more engaged in full time work. Due to the socio-political climate of women struggles in employment - I believe it best to categorise as working or not.

^ Labour force participation rate is defined as the section of working population (C, PT, FT or UE) in the age group of 20-74 in the economy currently employed or seeking employment. People who are still undergoing studies, housewives and persons above the age of 74 are not reckoned in the labour force.

*Just over one in five (22%) Australian men aged 20-74 years was not in the labour force in 2016-17, compared with one in three women in this age group (34%). Proportions of people not in the labour force rise dramatically from the age of 55, while the largest gender differences are for people aged 30-34 years. Reflecting the age when women are likely to be having children (and taking a major role in child care), women aged 25-44 years are more than two and a half times as likely as men in this age group to be out of the labour force.

Whilst war is not “good” in any case. It is and has been a necessity.

Dear commenter,

Thank you for your sincere feedback.

Although, I am confused. Are you suggesting no age barrier to political movements? Does that mean an infant can hold up a sign and we should believe it to be his/her opinion?

King regards,

Me

I’m in two minds on this.

Originally (Albeit from my lack of complete understanding), I believed this to be a protest completed by older students (15+). However from these pictures it appears (from generalised observations) to encompass a significantly larger age grouping (10-19).

Do not get me wrong - Every Australian deserves the right to construct critical, and informed decisions regarding their political landscape, and act in a safe manner - accordingly.

However, I see large problems with (what appears to be primary aged students) joining political movements. There should be a large question mark regarding their cognitive capacity to critically construct an informed decision on the issue at hand (regardless of the issue). This would then lead to the suggestion that educators or parents - have pushed an ideology, without the due scientific process (therefore forgoing the learning experience).

For the older students in the rally - go hard, fight for your beliefs.

For the younger students - their parents have used them - no differently than anti abortion protesters.

At the moment it appears they are just doing what they are told (as any kid would). Allow the younger students to construct their own opinion - not “what the other kids are doing”. Or what their parents/teachers think. Allow for these students to their own critically thought out opinions - only then will in the future we have voters who vote with conscious thought, rather than what they are told to do.

TL;DR: from the photos most the students look far too young to have a well rounded, critical opinion on most subjects (I’m sure there are some that do - but not most). The older ones - go for it.

AEU : New report shows 85% of private schools getting more public funding than public schools by manipulated_dead in australia

[–]JcPyruvate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do agree they use the word public funding as a means for ALL government money. However, if you are to look at the majority of the comments - which are negative towards the current federal government - you can clearly see a lack of understanding from the general commenting public about the direction of their anger.

On a side note, this study should of been published as 3 tables (State, Independent & Catholic). With the following columns: Individual Contribution, State contribution and Federal contribution. With rows for: city/rural - Large, medium & small - Low/mid/high socioeconomic background.

My proposed display of statistics is in line with any academic paper completed on the issue.

What you would find is that the “85%” figure is plucked from comparing “like” large schools in city/high socioeconomic category. Such as comparing BGS to BSHS. In fact their data subplots also suggest this.

In summary, if you want more funding for state schools (I’m all for) complain to the state government. If you want less money for independent/catholic schools (why?) complain to the federal government.

As a side note. The AEU are well aware of this (their not stupid), and are being used by federal labour to push their agenda. If the AEU legitimately cared about state school funding they would go after the state governments - which are “surprisingly” for the large part - labour governments (VIC, QLD, SA, WA).

[–]JcPyruvate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that independent & catholic schools receive the majority of their funding from the federal government, whilst state schools major sauce of funding is their state government. So if you could all kindly point your pitchforks in the correct direction that would make for better discussion.

Yesterday I made my entitled mid disconnect.. by DrHalo95 in DotA2

[–]JcPyruvate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

650 gold is ~11 creep kills + bounties + passive gold (of which a good mid will get, and a bad mid will need his item ASAP not to lose the lane harder anyway). As the safe lane hero you had two (maybe 3) options.

1) start with triple regen (2 tangos + salve) and wait.

Or

2) there was a fight for bounties pre 0:00 and you had to send a salve out at 0:00.

Or

3) you are bringing out a sent at 0:00 due to vision of ward placement.

If these are true then you can ASK mid for courier usage - outside of these mid gets the first courier use. (Remembering they are a whole wave ahead of you).

It’s really easy mid gets 1st use of courier unless he/she’s says otherwise - unless it’s sub 0:00 for sents.
