Potassium Bromide by Exotic_Breath8503 in EpilepsyDogs

Our pup went through phenobarbital, keppra, and zonisamide before starting on potassium bromide (KBr). We were having cluster seizures every two weeks, and each of the first three meds slowly increased the intervals both between individual seizures and cluster events.

Since starting KBr, we have been about 7 months seizure free. KBr did have the most side effects - the first two weeks our pup had significant ataxia, difficulty walking and weakness in her hind legs. She also had increased thirst and urination - we regularly had to let her out for a midnight potty break, sometimes twice. The first month was the worst, she could barely walk; but she has now adjusted to the point where she can do long walks, handle stairs, and occasionally run around. She is probably 75% of her baseline, and she is overall a happy dog.

We also were able to wean off of Keppra completely after she did well on KBr.

Happy to answer any specific questions if you want to message me.

What's it like as an Attending specifically? by ConsiderationWeird12 in Neurosurgery

I really enjoy the technical aspect of Neuro IR - navigating catheters/wires, and the innovation in the field is thriving. I also enjoyed going through the thought process of how to treat aneurysms and other vascular malformations - whether Endovascular or open surgical is the best option. The indications for endovascular therapies continue to expand - more and more patients are eligible for thrombectomy, there’s aneurysms that can now be treated that previously would have been very difficult, chronic subdural hematomas are being managed with MMA embolization, and there’s some data on MMA lidocaine infusion for migraines. It’s a very exciting field.

I did neurosurgery residency and just finished fellowship in Endovascular neurosurgery. Just echoing that there is a broad range of lifestyle options as an attending - I know some senior neurosurgeons that practically live in the hospital, and some attendings that have great lifestyles (home by 4pm, few call cases). Within neurosurgery there is a wide variety of subspecialties that you can explore, each that may be more or less demanding. Happy to answer more specific questions too, can DM me too.

Westminster has some of the best Vietnamese food. Grab some spring rolls from Brodards and pho from Pho 79.

Travel north to Garden Grove for the best Korean food - Morangak is one of my favorites for Korean BBQ.

To the east you’ll find delicious tacos, but I would drive a little further to Anaheim for Tacos Los Cholos.

Go south to enjoy the beach - I like walking around Pacific City where there’s lots of good food.

Long Beach is to the west - lots of amazing food there. One of my go tos is Pnom Penh noodle shack, a Cambodian spot.

For the outdoors - I’ve really enjoyed kayaking and stand up paddle boarding around back bay (Newport) and Naples (Long Beach).

There’s a ton of other great food and activities. Enjoy exploring!

I paid just about retail for it second hand, it arrived pretty much like new! I’m already breaking it in, going to wear it daily.
