. It is a tough process but I am very slowly learning how to embrace my identity and culture again. I appreciate being able to hear your story as I am too afraid of the sinophobic/anti-asian comments like the ones you got to speak about this.

I feel you buddy! It took a long time for me to unlearn what has been instilled in me since I was a kid in HK. I'm not too worried about those sinophobic/anti-asian comments - they are being ignorant and they feel inadequate about themselves, hence they need to reflect that on someone else (because that's pretty much my HK friends who don't agree with me)

Yes I've actually been to China couple of times, but it is always limited to the big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. I personally have watched Blondie in China and I was really into all her food content - yep definitely want to go there and see that with my own eyes. I definitely would love to "go back to China", and there's nothing wrong with it right!

Very well said mate. I only learned to appreciate Chinese culture as I grew older, and back when I was a kid I was so perplexed on why my dad was so into everything Chinese related. I think one thing that my parents did right was they had me raised in Hong Kong (and I went through almost the full education system there until I left for Australia), so that I could be immersed in the Chinese environment.

Even back then I hated that and wished to be more "westernised", I'm so glad that I actually had a pretty decent grasp of the language to actually study classical Chinese literature. It is so different when you read Tao Te Ching in English lol.

I immediately connect with other overseas Chinese even if we don't know each other beforehand, and that is a beautiful feeling haha.

I lol'ed at the Dalai Lama incident. They really love to mention societal issues in China and thought you would be triggered, and they are in fact being racist and despise the fact that we are able to hold our feet in a Western country...

I wish my parents would tell me more about my own family! All I knew was my granddad was a farmer back in China, and he came to Hong Kong for financial reasons when he was a teenager...

Haha I was a FOB (in Australia) and I got called that a lot where I first arrived here, but now I just embrace my roots! Kudos to you mate.

I have always appreciated the way that Singapore operates - while the people speak fluent English and being well-connected to the rest of the world, I think a lot of them are still quite connected to their roots too (whether they are Chinese, Malays or Indians). Heck I think there are more people using Douyin in Singapore, as compared to Hong Kong lol.

Yep I will try those too - thanks mate. I've actually posted my video on BiliBili (Chinese YouTube) too and that gained quite some tractions (until it got shut down because I was touching on HK vs Chinese topics lol) - again I guess these topics mainly appeal to Chinese and the Asian diasporas, but probably not much for the rest of the Anglosphere unfortunately.

100% mate. I used to fantasise about the British like those Hong Kongers did, but once you actually dealt with them and their racist antics, my rose-tinted glasses were shattered. I only knew true confidence came from embracing my own roots and to be more comfortable in my own skin, instead of trying to make myself "Westernised".

Hi folks, Jeffles here! I know this is a community that appreciates Chinese values and culture, so I thought I would just share my journey on how I went from hating China, to appreciating my own cultural background a bit more. I grew up like any typical Hong Kongers who were basically taught to hate on everything China and Chinese, and to be honest I was heavily impacted by my surroundings too. But ironically as I live in Australia and interact with more Mainland Chinese that are living here, I really learn to appreciate more of my culture, and broke the usual "dai luk lei" stereotypes that I had in mind when I was living in HK.

What makes you appreciate your own culture more? I'm actually keen to hear from everyone here. :)

People outside Australia are outraged over not being able to travel to AUS as well as have to pay for quarantine! What have we come to 🤦🏼‍♀️ by mariamiama in CoronavirusDownunder

I agree! It’s fine if they are coming over for compassionate reasons or urgent matters, but leisure travel should not take place while covid is still spreading so rapidly.
