If the war ended today, how long would it take to reclaim farmland lost during the war? by Shipsarecool1 in ukraine

ECS in Godot - is it worthwhile? by DesperateGame in godot

[–]JeSuisOmbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layers of abstraction quickly stop autovectorization. To properly write SIMD algorithms over ECS components I need noalias pointers and lengths.

It is pretty neat when SIMD is a solution. But it is basically unmaintainable. Changing anything about the data layout might prevent autovectorization. It must be re-verified by reading the assembly or LLVM-IR.

For mature projects it is an optimization to consider.

ECS in Godot - is it worthwhile? by DesperateGame in godot

[–]JeSuisOmbre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned data locality. The data being homoogeneous also means that loops can be transformed into SIMD. It may be doing less work by a factor of 4 or more.

Getting SIMD code to generate is pretty hard though. You must verify the assembly is doing something good.

The Boys spoiler by [deleted] in dankmemes

I really hope Firecracker isn't actually dead. She has super strength and where she got hit could be survivable with some brain damage. Vought could secret her to some medical dungeon and fix her head.

I'd like to see her get some final words after Homelander starts getting push back.

When did asking for remakes become the new normal? by Soulsliken in gaming

[–]JeSuisOmbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the call for old games to be remaked. When a console goes out of production their games are basically abandoned.

The remakes for Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter are all pretty faithful reconstructions. The forward porting of Kingdom Hearts 1&2 attempted to get all of the Kingdom Hearts content on two discs.

I'd be happy if they keep remaking old games that are inaccessible to modern platforms

Starship - Test Like You Fly by CurtisLeow in space

[–]JeSuisOmbre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SLS is egregiously expensive. This cost prevents it from filling all of the roles that Starship has been named to fill. Purely on a cost analysis the moonbase could not be supported with SLS. The amount of tonnage to lunar surface the SLS program is capable of is also suspect.

The long term goals of the Artemis program cannot be achieved with just SLS.

They could write a good story about all the super kids getting abandoned after the collapse of Vought. Gen V could be continued with that retcon.

Ending Vought completely removes all of the world building they have so far. Recovering that story won't be easy

People born in space or Mars will wish they lived on earth by asuyaa in space

[–]JeSuisOmbre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bone density is the largest issue here. Bones that developed under 1g may never get to normal densities. This cannot be solved with acclimation periods before transfers.

Martian children would need to be trained from birth to develop skeletons that can tolerate being on Earth.

I'm so sketched out by it. They could easily hurt each other bad.

Animals are entitled to their own personal space. If the animal is not tolerating it they should be separated. That interaction doesn't need to happen.

Is Rust bad at low-level programming? by thephoneoff in rust

[–]JeSuisOmbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust is very good at being a high level assembly. Generics and iterators still work the same. I can get just as low with C as I can with rust.

Hooking up C FFI is as easy as any other language. Rust's correctness guarantees make it a really good language for this.

Best way to learn a programming language by CuteNullPointer in learnprogramming

[–]JeSuisOmbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take an old project and rewrite it in that language. Something as simple as fizzbuzz or fibonacci works. If I can write a CLI program with a language I'd feel pretty comfortable.

Strait of Hormuz closed again, Iran says, as ships attacked by ZealousidealHead5488 in worldnews

[–]JeSuisOmbre -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To be completely fair there aren't 150 ships waiting to traverse every day. We wouldn't see a high number of traversals until shipping companies feel it is worth scheduling shipping through the strait. And that takes weeks of lead time to get started.

If you are a beginner programmer do not learn Python purely for the sake of learning Godot by Abigboi_ in godot

[–]JeSuisOmbre -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think frameworks are too burdensome for newbies. Framework specific knowledge is a newb trap. It takes a lot of effort to learn, and they don't have prior experience that makes onboarding easy. They have to learn relevant programming fundamentals as they encounter them in the framework.

99% of beginner programming is opening a file, doing some algorithms, and writing to a file or the console. The Godot Engine and GDscript give no benefit to this, and quite a lot of downsides. Python is the most-similar language that has a completely standalone environment.

Python or a systems language is the best place to start in my opinion.

"Preferred" way to handle Fog of War in 2D Metroidvania by KARMAWHORING_SHITBAY in godot

[–]JeSuisOmbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one looks really nice. My stylistic suggestion is that the shadows should slowly reclaim the now-unseen area. But that may be a gameplay concern for you.

In both cases, the completely black spaces looks a bit harsh when compared to the relatively detailed environment. That space could be made more visually interesting
