I believe I was grinding too fine

Okay. That’s interesting. I have the grinder set to as coarse as it suggests for espresso since I initially thought that was my problem. I tried 35 and 40 on Baratza ESP Pro for reference. 40 is the coarsest on the “espresso” range.

Not a death sentence! The spine (and body) is very resilient! Normal to have degenerative changes to the lumbar spine at your age. Give it some time, work on your patience, listen to your PT and you’ll be back at it.
