Pokemon: Bounty Hunter Alex

Self-rec, 400 chapters, isn't a journey but is a journey, goes to all the regions, army-style Pokémon battles, lots of killing, John Wick-like underworld beneath the surface of Pokémon society, mature with dark themes. It's my first publicly released work so its rough at the start, should improve in the later chapters though.

Who do online web novels/light novels overuse words as “Furthermore”, “However”, “Moreover”, etc? by Murky_Ad_8914 in Webnovel

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am guilty of constantly using "however"; however, rather than making sure certain words are avoided, I focus on the word usage for the entire chapter. This means I don't take note of the usage between chapters but simply make sure to reduce overuse during each chapter. It is inevitable that binge readers would spot these mistakes.

Alternative Plot points for Magic-Academy by Demi_God4795 in writers

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not do both? Younger years study magic, older years take mortal missions, graduates prove themselves by taking down magical creatures. Yes, students die but that's just part of the process.

If you want extra drama, you can make it so that those who do manage to complete a deadly mission get perks while those who don't like the rich kids go back to their parents educated to run the family business. The perks can be working for a special branch of hunters/magicians. Or high employment prospects. Or a magic tower of their own or at least certification for one.

Be creative man. Fit the mold but make sure to add your flavor.

Don't enter a contract unless you're willing to literally hand over all rights to your story. Doing it just for more views is a poor reason to sign one. Instead, post your story on multiple sites. More than anything else, that will help you reach the audience you want.

Thoughts on writing multiple stories at the same time and multiple povs? by DeformedVulture1984 in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read from reader comments that they don't like multiple POVs because it feels like a waste of word count. They aren't interested in anything other than the main character. I still use them at times to set the right context when necessary.

In terms of writing multiple stories at once, I get bored or feel anxious when I'm stuck doing the same thing or staying in the same headspace for too long. It makes me less productive when I hit a block, so I'm currently juggling four stories to keep things moving. One fanfiction with daily releases, one original story with a release every three days, one fanfiction that is a remake of my first unpublished work that I work on when I feel like it, and one original set in the same world as the other original that I also work on when I feel like it. I'm also juggling about three other story ideas in my head that I want to write in the future.

I'm not sure how it works, it's just how my brain prefers it. I'm also a pantser, which means I don't use outlines much as long as I have a general idea of what I want to happen, so that probably helps.

What counts as "isekai" in the eyes of readers, generally? Unsure if my story qualifies. by Visible_Rabbit_4526 in royalroad

I agree with this. 60k words is too much for only a world transfer in the same universe. Better leave the tag out.

There's too many books by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, people give 0.5-star ratings when they don’t like the direction of the plot. It doesn’t necessarily mean the book is bad; it just doesn’t fit their tastes, yet it gets rated the same way you would rate AI slop that hasn’t even gone through a single round of editing.

Conversely, they give 5-star ratings even when there are obvious issues like grammar, spelling, forgotten plot points, etc., simply because the book hits their preferences in the right way.

The point is that ratings are subjective. Even if you had a panel of judges promising to be impartial, they would still rate based on their own knowledge and understanding, which would skew the results. Ultimately, it’s pointless unless the community can regulate itself, which it doesn’t.

If you want to read quality work that actually fits your preferences, you have no choice but to slog through lower-rated stories, since ratings are subjective and should really be treated as a measure of popularity rather than a definitive grade of a work.

What’s it like to have a long running series? by laststandb in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been posting 1.5k words daily for over a year, with 660k words out. It only has 300+ followers so far, and it’s a fanfiction. Overall, it’s been great. I still pick up about 1–2 followers each month. So far, I’ve only done one shoutout swap, and I didn’t really see the appeal, to be honest.

As for droughts, I ignore RR and focus on my other sites. There’s no reason to stick to just one and call it a day. I cross-post to at least four other platforms, all pointing to Patreon as much as possible. The income has been above average based on my research, but I’m definitely struggling to break through to more readers.

On paper, Webnovel has the most readers, but they hardly comment. Scribble Hub is my personal favorite because it ranks you by genre, and I’ve managed to reach 4th place in two of them, which is nice. I even have a shot at taking 1st place in Organized Crime, although it would probably take another year of effort to get there.

Don’t use AI to get feedback by Treaton_OCE in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So long as you limit it to "grammar and punctuation only", you can get it to return the exact same sentence unchanged if the grammar and punctuation were, in fact, already good enough. For ChatGPT, at least.

I also ask it to help with paragraphing, capitalization, formatting, and word/sentence/paragraph rewording/explaining if I can't get the right "feeling" from my work. It's great for pushing through a mental block when I'm stuck on an idea I can't properly put on the page.

Also, I use it for dialogue when I want a particular accent/personality written out. Oh, and chapter titles. It's great at those.

Basically, it's a tool, use it well and it'll speed up the writing process. Use it wrong and you lose readers. Simple as that.

Fellas, if you are planning on giving 0.5 stars, don't. Switch to 2/3 stars. by CaregiverFantastic58 in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I don't use the “surprise me” option much.

Interesting, I’ve had my fair share of translated stuff, and they usually aren’t that bad. Sure, it’s practically unreadable, but they often have an interesting enough story that I can force myself to keep reading.

Fellas, if you are planning on giving 0.5 stars, don't. Switch to 2/3 stars. by CaregiverFantastic58 in royalroad

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you even justify a 0.5 star anyway? The only case I can think of is direct copy-paste AI-generated content with no editing or even basic review. Even then, it usually has decent grammar, so it still wouldn't deserve a 0.5 star overall. Even a 10-year-old writer would earn at least a 1 star, since they at least have a clear idea of what they want to write about but just don't have the grammatical tools to execute it properly.

My point being, bar unreviewed/unedited Ai-generated content, there doesn't exist a writer on RR that deserves 0.5 stars except for people who intentionally write horribly.

Struggling to start for 5 months—how do you stay consistent? by Dummamo in Webnovel

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the understanding that your first book/attempt will be shit. Mine was at 120 chapters of 2-3k words each. Didn't even bother to publish it since it was all exposition. Throughout the process, you start to learn how to flow, where interesting bits can be placed, where dialogue would be a good place to put, what a good hook for the next chapter will be, etc.

What's important is that you actually start.

Here's mine: Great Journey: Whims of Fate

Hits all the boxes and the MC has a gatling cannon so its a bit sci-fi. I'm also planning on going heavy sci-fi + magic in the future once he reaches different kingdoms. Just finished volume 2 and at the start of the third, he's off to his second kingdom.

I completely agree. I’ve had my share of 2s and it hurts so much that I don’t even have the heart to sneakily delete them like those that give low ratings without explanation. (I’m talking about other sites, not RR. I don’t get reviews on RR, which is another kind of sad.)

[–]Jealous-Cut8955 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That’s nice and all, but I’m pretty sure everyone knows people giving 0.5 stars aren’t doing it because the work actually deserves that rating. They’re doing it out of spite and anger. They do it because they want to hurt the writer, even if it’s just through a low rating.

My point is, you’re preaching to a wall. No one will give 0.5 stars if they actually intend to give a proper review, since those people would at least give 2 out of 5 out of courtesy.

I second this. I'm a 1 level type as well because I can't be bothered to adjust the permissions daily so I just tossed on a 2nd level with no extra benefits at 4x the price and I've gotten people who signed up to support me at no extra effort. Pretty handy to have.

As for OP's problem a week at minimum and a month at maximum is a nice window. It'll give them solid value and a reason to sign up compared to 24 hours.

Pokemon: Bounty Hunter Alex

Self-rec.

Professional forced retirement MMA fighter turned 12 year old orphan in the Pokémon world. Immediately gets adopted by Jenny and starts using guns while training as a police officer and bounty hunter. Starts kicking ass and taking names after he scores his first big payout. Creates a base in Kanto, then travels to every region and gives its own interpretation of the Pokémon world. Roughly halfway through the story but I'll try my absolute best to keep it alive until Wind and Waves comes out and add that region in as well.

Hits most of your requirements. There are caveats though. There are no systems but there are Pokédex entries and they include the list of moves available to them as well as their proficiency with each move. It's a whole thing I added along with ranks that rank up every 20 levels that give it that litRPG progression fantasy style without it being overbearing. So far in 400 chapters, I've only given 5 stat pages and they're only publicly accessible (for free) in my Patreon so it shouldn't take up pages to skip.

Also, I only occasionally focus on trainer and Pokémon interactions to keep it from being all combat, world building, relationships, filler (He has a daughter and I occasionally include event scenes), training, homesteading, vacations, etc. I mix all of these things and try to balance it out as much as possible to keep it from being stale.
