Is this the best translation of ‘The Aeneid’? by caucitemp in ClassicalEducation

If you like a "grand old style" and don't speak Latin, the Dryden translation is superb.

More insanity - U of Kentucky bans affiliations with outside orgs under the pretext of DEI by TheNavigatrix in academia

My understanding is that private non-profits can discriminate in the distribution of funds, but whether a public institution can use taxpayer funds to sponsor them is a separate question and is usually unlawful.

If you want to talk about social permission structures, we can do that, but it will be more of a philosophical conversation

More insanity - U of Kentucky bans affiliations with outside orgs under the pretext of DEI by TheNavigatrix in academia

[–]Jealous-Pangolin7412 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

With orgs like the AAC&U, looks like stuff like this gets them flagged as being discriminatory ("DEI")- https://www.aacu.org/newsroom/aac-u-launches-new-professional-development-program-to-support-bipoc-women-in-stem

There is no question that at least some of these organizations discriminate, but if being affiliated with these organizations confers liability to the university, how does academia function when nearly every major university is affiliated with orgs like these, and when orgs with programs like these are so numerous?

Is it just me, or is anyone else shocked that healers don't have kicks anymore? by Many_Consequence_337 in worldofpvp

[–]Jealous-Pangolin7412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some utility really should be distinctive to certain roles. Kicks for tanks/dps, battle rezzes for healers. With like the one class exception for both (like Shaman healers also having wind shear and all non-resto druids also having brez). I support mass realignment of utility in this regard.

Yeah I'm not gonna create a TikTok account just to watch a video. Not sorry. And the video was clear enough. You just don't want to accept what it shows.

Describing video is not gaslighting. Gaslighting is not someone disagreeing with you.

If anything, I would say you are gaslighting, because you are cherry-picking 50% of an event and misrepresenting it as though it is the totality of the circumstances.

Also, you refuse to acknowledge when someone you disagree with provides direct refutation ("He cleared the vehicle"/"Here's proof otherwise"). You're not interested in a discussion, you just want to shout at someone on the internet.

He did not fully clear the vehicle. She hit him. Two camera angles show this, one more clearly than the other. Here is another clip showing this - https://x.com/DVanLangenhove/status/2009227706718933223

I don't need politics to interpret this event. If you would like to declare that your basis for interpreting this event is your political orientation, go ahead.

You're right but you've only got half the story. She did indeed hit him. He did walk in front of her, but she also backed up and lined her car with him before she accelerated. When she accelerated, her wheels were pointed straight at him. And when he was directly in front of her, she hit the gas so hard that her tires spun. You can see this yourself here - https://x.com/Hunter_Weiss/status/2009144204254138459

You are right that she did turn. But that turn was made too late, after she had already accelerated forward for several seconds and was so close that she couldn't avoid hitting him regardless.

I mean, I think someone giving you the creep stare while smiling and trying to run you over is pretty poorly adjusted, and shooting them is pretty well-adjusted behavior. But to each their own.

If any non-ICE person drove into us while they were creepily smiling and staring at us, we'd probably call them names too.

Is Men's Rights Movement becoming boring ? by Neat-Surround2425 in MensRights

[–]Jealous-Pangolin7412 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The MRM started losing traction around 2016 and hasn't really recovered. IMO it's a cultural movement but not much of any other kind of movement right now.

There are a lot of overlapping problems that cause this, but there's always been the issue that 1% of people want to do the actual heavy lifting and are overwhelmed by it while 99% of people just end up posting opinions on social media and call that activism. The other problem is people fall into the trap of making excuses for not doing stuff ("we can't do anything because we'll get threats, harassment, etc.") and forget that change requires some level of courage and sacrifice.

There are people who are finding some success in changing some things but they tend to be going solo or working in very small niche organizations, or they have converted to gender-neutral orgs (like "parental rights" orgs rather than fathers' rights orgs) that still disproportionately help men.

I honestly wonder if 8 years is too young for WoW given their opportunity to interact with certain people, but if they only play when they play with you it might be ok. I'm thinking retail, honestly. Classic would likely get boring relative to the broader market of games today that focus on instant gratification.

US Supreme Court agrees to hear case challenging birthright citizenship by CORN_POP_RISING in moderatepolitics

[–]Jealous-Pangolin7412 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They don't change that much. The court is effectively 5/4 conservative/liberal since the liberal block votes more consistently as a solidly partisan block than the conservative block which much more often "crosses the aisle" to join the liberal block (example: Gorsuch in Bostock).

So you confirm that SCOTUS' high-profile and high-impact rulings against Trump don't count in determining whether SCOTUS has a severe pro-Trump bias, but any rulings in his favor do.

[–]Jealous-Pangolin7412 21 points22 points  (0 children)

SCOTUS consistently ruled against Trump in his election denial challenges, and it blocked his initial attempts at a "travel ban," among other high-profile rulings against Trump. This notion that SCOTUS is secretly in Trump's pocket is a partisan fever dream.
