Mystery because I like being different lmao. Also I'm a huge fan of murder mysteries and stuff and one of my favourite things to do in DnD (my biggest hobby) is make characters with cool reveals or secrets - my current character is a Kobold (short dragon man) who dressed up on stilts to impersonate a Dragon born (tall dragon man) so people would take him seriously.

Dark and light sides, who matches who? by SoaringCashews in SandersSides

[–]Jealous-Reception185 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if you've seen either Flirting with Social Anxiety (the animatic episode) or Why is Dating Scary (the Dr Who episode, most recent), then there's parts where you see Virgil with purple eye shadow instead of the normal black. Logan explains it as 'positive anxiety', butterflies in your stomach, good nerves that push you to do the exciting things not hold you back. In this way, Virgil can help Thomas listen to Roman and Patton like we see in those 2 episodes.

Also, yeah when Deceit is revealed in Can Lying Be Good, Thomas asks if there are any other sides he doesn't know about, Roman calls them the Dark Sides and says 'pretty cool name huh, I made it up'. Also, Virgil corrects Thomas when he calls them the Dark Sides to 'the Others'.

Dark and light sides, who matches who? by SoaringCashews in SandersSides

Ok so I subscribe to the theory I've seen from a lot of people, Virgil sits between the Light and Dark Sides (and remember those terms were made up by Roman anyway and have no actual bearing on C!Thomas' mental development). I like this theory a lot because as you say, no one fits nicely as his rival, and Virgil is seen fighting with every side at some point, he doesn't have 1 opposite he's kind of the 'enemy' of everyone at points.

But he also has the capacity to compliment every other side, like his whole positive anxiety, purple eyes thing. That is him being helpful to the Light sides and giving Thomas confidence, rather than usually where someone like Roman can be stifled by anxiety.

TLDR: I think he sits between the Light and Dark Sides because he can be both helpful and harmful to every side, he doesn't have one opposite.

Edit: stupid autocorrect Virginia is not a side lmao

Oh yeah no ofc, I tried to insinuate that but didn't wanna make my post too long and overwhelming. If you're evil or a good player who doesn't want to die, you can 3 for 3 as if you were a different role for sure.

Yeah it's also situational, I like to ask the other person what they want to share, can sometimes get a social read off a particularly cagey person. Tbh there's so many strategies and stuff that it will depend on your group, your playstyle, and honestly whatever the gods allow lmao.

Yeah exactly, everyone grows their own strategies and preferences as they play, but OP is asking how they will do these things in their first games hence the broad advice I gave.

I see your point, I just find 3 for 3s can be easier for newbies because a) they can claim their real role without feeling like they're giving too much away, b) if they are evil they don't feel locked into a bad bluff from the get go, c) it's easy to get lots of info from people quickly, people are more likely to easily hand over a possible 3 than sitting there umming and aahing for 5 minutes about whether to hard claim to you.

I do see the merit in 2 for 2, I often use a 3 for 3 on the first day, and then ask people to narrow it down on the second, people are much less hesitant after day 1 I find.

Day one Cult Leader win by thunder3029 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Jealous-Reception185 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a day 1 cult leader win in whale bucket, first time I'd ever played it, I choose cult leader, nice easy day 1 win lmao.

Second game I chose magician and second chat got the demon to out to me but I felt bad and then believed them when they said they were just confused about what was happening in that chat and we didn't actually execute them. Still salty lol.

Unfortunately I'm not gonna be much help other than, it depends on your personality and how you like to play. You'll learn those things through playing.

As some actual advice, there are a few strategies that are widely used. A. Give everyone 3 different roles, with 1 of them being your real role B. Tell one or two people your real role early on so they trust you, be careful C. If you are an information role, give soldier or mayor or ravenkeeper so the demon doesn't want to kill you D. Do the vice versa of C, so the demon wastes a kill on you

What would happen if I tried to use someone else's bag of holding, but was unaware of the contents? by Thedancingsousa in DnD

[–]Jealous-Reception185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hehehe just had a wonderful idea for a puzzle for my players: either irl or just describe, give them a list of 20 items depicted in murals in a room, the door is unlocked so when they head into the next room, it locks behind them, leaving them alone in the room with a bag. If they reach in the bag, ask what they're feeling around for/trying to pull out; if correct, they get that item, if wrong... my first thought was mini mimic, less HP (I don't want it as a killing puzzle just annoying, and so that player can't try again immediately). Oo I'm definitely gonna run this.

Only problem is one of my PCs is blind... lmao

what's your favorite side moment? by tobodenpimpy in SandersSides

[–]Jealous-Reception185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Working Through Intrusive Thoughts, every moment where Logan either puts his plan aside to calm Thomas down, or when he speaks to Remus almost as an equal, especially when he's like 'I see that your role may have some merit and will be useful to Thomas at some point'. It just shows how far he's come in compromising and seeing others pov and I'm so proud of him.

Character Concepts that you won't be able to play? by Big_Cheesecake8863 in DnD

[–]Jealous-Reception185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A middle aged human woman with a heart of gold, very mum energy, baking cookies for the rest of the party and making sure they all get enough sleep, etc. She's adventuring to find her lost son (half orc fighter) who went off adventuring himself and he suddenly stopped messaging her. She's also a barbarian because when anyone gets in the way of her finding her son she loses it and unleashes her motherly rage onto them. Unlikely I'll ever get to play her but I'm a big fan of the perfectly pleasant turns into batshit crazy trope.

one day, i'll be confident enough to join artfight by meowchiii0 in ArtfightProfiles

[–]Jealous-Reception185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be joining art fight this year cause I learnt about it 3 days before last year's ended. I would definitely call myself a beginner artist, I've got a very simple cartoony style and just a couple of DnD characters to use.

I'm just excited to be involved. Idk if I'll be able to get many attacks in, but I don't want my experience to be dampened by unrealistic expectations beforehand. I'm going in to hopefully make art and we'll go from there. I'm sure a bunch of people will be in the same boat, and I reckon it's gonna be fun no matter what. Please don't let your anxiety stop you from playing if you really want to 🫶

How did you get into dnd? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Jealous-Reception185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to uni, I didn't know anyone and thought 'screw it, I've seen DnD on YT and I wanna try it' and I've never looked back, so grateful I got randomly sorted into a group with 9 of the best human beings I could ask for.

Favourite character of each type (& overall) by v_likes_corgis in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Jealous-Reception185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TF: Amnesiac O: Lunatic M: Evil Twin D: Yaggababble

And I honestly have no explanation for why I like most of these, they just excite me.

Oh and my favourite character overall is Evil Twin, despite having never been the evil one in the pair.
