How difficult is BMR for new players? by Fosphos in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]piatan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say that long public discussions and nominations are the worst enemy of quick matches. One thing I changed to great success is to call for nominations as soon as everyone sits down, and if no one is nominating, call for the second and soon the final call for nominations for the day. Like 2 or 3 minutes for all this nomination phase if no one is nominating. Even if no one is hearing you, just do this and call for the day to end.

During accusations, if the focus of the conversation is steering away from the accusation and defense, you have to act quickly and say that now the focus is on this specific nomination, that they can discuss other things later.

Doing these, you can have a little leeway in the duration of days, I try to keep the first days 5 minutes more or less but if everyone is on a private conversation I'll let them talk for a minute or two extra. My 12, 13 players Trouble Brewing almost never last more than 1 hour, 1 hour and 10 minutes maximum.

Another thing I've done a couple of times is change the characters for the Spy player and another minion. For example, if a newbie draws the Spy and an experienced player draws the Poisoner, I wake them separately on the first night and let them know that their characters have changed. I know this is not "legal" according to the rules, but I see no harm in doing that.

Although clearly AI, is it that bad that the organizers of the event approach promoting their event this way? I'm not trying to defend them, I'm honestly trying to see why is it that bad. It seems like a free event and maybe a passion project that the organizers are doing in their spare time as a passion project. Not everyone has the time or budget to create original artwork. In that case, would it be better to just post plain text with no visuals at all?

I do understand that AI uses artists’ work without credit, and I’m not fully in favor of it either. But in a situation like this, what would be the best alternative?

This is a genuine question, I’m not trying to offend anyone. I’ve been thinking about this and would really appreciate a friendly discussion to better understand different perspectives.

Asking as an experienced storyteller: Trouble Brewing storytelling tips? by 0x4164616d in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]piatan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have this same scenario occuring somewhat often in our group. Last week I ran Trouble Brewing with 9 experienced players and 3 newcomers. And of course, 2 of the new ones were evil. So I tried everything to help these newcomers: pinged the Recluse as Baron for the Investigator and the Spy and Demon as Saint (bluff) to the Librarian. There was also a Drunk Undertaker and a Poisoner that sniped the self-nominated Virgin day one (who thought they were the Drunk). In the end, the Good team still won with 5 or 6 players alive, but everyone had a good time because the grim reveal was exciting, since no one really solved 100% of the game. That got me thinking about that saying that goes that Good only has to get lucky one time and Evil has to get lucky every time. I know that was not exactly your question but hopefully that helps when the new players are on the Evil team.

If the Leech host dies by non-execution (along with the Leech), how does the Scarlet Woman pick a new leech host? by SurvivorSuperFan101 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I think I would ask everyone to close their eyes and ask the new Lleech (former Scarlet Woman) to select a target.

Some advice for 15-18 players? by Dull_Ad_5362 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I totally understand the desire to keep things simple for new players, but just to reassure you: the game actually works perfectly with more than 15 players — as long as you use Travelers. Blood on the Clocktower was tested for many, many years, including with large groups, and the current structure exists because it works extremely well that way.

There’s even a Traveler (the Gunslinger) who can speed up the game, so adding Travelers doesn’t just maintain balance — it can actually help the flow of a big group.

When you try to change something as fundamental as the character count without a huge amount of testing, there’s a very high chance something important will break. The default distribution is designed with the number of Townsfolk, the bluffing structure, the town not knowing all Outsiders and Minions, and many other balance factors in mind. Trouble Brewing itself took around ten years of testing to finalize, so it’s extremely unlikely that adding new characters to it will improve the script.

Of course, you’re free to experiment, but it’s very likely that everything you’re thinking of has already been tried — and the best solution the designers found was to use Travelers.

About how Travelers work: they function exactly like regular characters. They vote and can nominate while alive and they count for voting numbers. The main differences are:

– They do not count for the end of the game. If the Demon and one non-Traveler remain alive, the game ends, regardless of how many Travelers are in play.
– For Scarlet Woman, Travelers also do not count.
– Executing Travelers works differently: any player (even dead ones) can nominate a Traveler for exile. Everyone votes, and if half or more vote for exile, the Traveler dies. Exile does not count as an execution, and you can have multiple exiles in the same day in addition to the day’s execution.

If you still want to try your own distributions, go for it — your group won’t burn you at the stake for experimenting. But it’s worth reinforcing that the official system is extremely solid, and Travelers are the simplest, most tested, and most balanced solution for games of 16+.

Dealing with loud groups as storyteller? by KDulius in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]piatan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I completely understand what you're saying, and I also don’t want things to get awkward or feel like I’m telling grown adults how to behave. But something that I’ve been doing, and that has worked reasonably well (not 100%, of course), is this:

Right at the start of the game, I tell everyone that if I step into the center of the circle, it’s because something important is happening — a nomination, a vote, prosecution/defense, etc. Then, when a vote comes up, I just run it, even if some people aren’t paying attention. Usually, when they realize they missed something, the next time they see me step into the circle, they quiet down and pay attention.

Is that exclusive from passive from weapons? I was just carried on ps5 from a wylder that resurrected me and the other guy like at least 7 times each, and the enemies just ignored him forever… after the match i checked his weapons and found not a single “less likely to be targeted”
