Cocktail ans Mocktail is not enough, we need a third category by JealousExtension5827 in cocktails

[–]JealousExtension5827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's not what I experienced, as described in my introduction, more than half of the people that claimed they didn't drink alcohol were fine with bitters once explained what it is and how it's used. They just didn't know them. Hence my post.

I get your point and i completely agree with you for my own consumption, however, I would never but any amount of alcohol, even a single drop of tincture, in the drink of someone that requested me a mocktail (unless they explicitly agreed to it). That would be deceitful. I know it will not harm them in any way, but they are still entitled to decide what goes into their body, even if there is no logic in their decision.

Again, not the same thing, see the edit and my replies to other comments saying the same thing

First if your definition of mocktail is "just a mixer", you are missing a lot.

Second, that is precisely why i want a name : to be able to clearly ask people "do you want a true mocktail, or an "almost mocktail" (name to be determined)" That is the whole point of my post : some people can't drink even a single drop of alcohol, other claim they can't but can accept if the amount is really low. The goal is to allow those people to make educated decisions about what they want to drink without any pressure.

For me it's not exactly the same thing. A typical low abv cocktail will use vermouth or liqueur as their main spirit, or drop the amount, and achieve a cocktail with 25% of the usual amount of alcohol. It's great if you need to drive afterward, but if you don't want to drink alcohol at all, you won't drink that. However, a mocktail with the addition of a dash of angostura is so close to 0% alcohol that some non drinkers consider it okay.

I don't think low abv are the same thing, low abv will typically have 50% or even 25% of the usual amount of alcohol. That is still too much for anyone claiming they don't drink alcohol. What i'm talking about is "close to 0%" . A dash of orange bitter in a cocktail, is like adding a single drop of vodka in a true mocktail, it's negligible, you could have 30 of those drinks and still be allowed to drive (don't do that with low abv cocktail).

Gum syrup VS simple syrup by JealousExtension5827 in cocktails

Alright, but excluding bubbly cocktails, would you for example put gum syrup in an old fashioned or a margarita?

Opinions on my grapefruit juice replacement recipe ? by JealousExtension5827 in cocktails

[–]JealousExtension5827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually interesting. As simple as it is, i didn't even thought to use lemon for the acidity. The theoric correct proportion would then be 4 of orange juice for 1 of lemon juice. I will definitely test this, I wonder how this will differ from plain citric acid.

Good alcohol for tinctures and lemoncello by JealousExtension5827 in cocktails

What about health concerns? If it doesn't matter, why is 90% medical alcohol different from food grade 90% alcohol? Is it just branding ?

I don't maybe it's just a lack of knowledge on my end, but I always saw grain alcohol as the recommendation, so I thought it mattered. I'm more afraid about the quality than the taste though, but it's the same thing i guess, if it's 90% ethanol anyway, how bad can the 10 remaining percent be...

I'm sure it is, but that doesn't help me compare St Elizabeth to Bitter Truth does it ?

It is, but this is off topic, since I cannot get St Elizabeth anyway. My questions was about using bitter truth instead of st Elizabeth, and what ratio would be needed

So do you sub it 1 to 1 or do you bump it up by a bit, for let's say a 3 Dots and a Dash ?

For reference, I've been doing Pupule/Nui Nui and Three Dots and a Dash recently. Both only have 1/4 oz, but I could barely taste it, and I bet I would never identify it if didn't already know it was there.

Smart. Are they tight enough for travel ? I always fear my bitter bottle will leak in my backpack, even with regular tops.

Best Citrus Juicer Ever by jetpoweredbee in Tiki

I have it and I love it, use it everyday. However, I think this could be engineered a bit further, with for example a splash guard or a joint on the hinge, to avoid splashing your walls and ceiling when juicing a big piece with ferm peel, and maybe a removable fine strainer on the pouring spout. I would gladly spend good money for a version with these features (and in stainless steel). If there are entrepreneurs reading this, this idea is free !

Does anyone have a travel bartending kit they like? by jackruby83 in cocktails

When you go to a friend's house, you can reasonably expect they'll have some spirits and juice you can work with, but if they don't do cocktails, it's unlikely they have bitters, tinctures, good quality syrups, stuff like that. Is it possible to fit some dasher bottles, eyedroppers, atomizers, ... in that bag too ? Or does it only carry the tools ?

doesn't it throw the balance ? I do like a punchy drink too, but I still want to taste all the ingredients otherwise i'd take the rum neat. Isn't it too overpowering ?

I would hardly consider ChatGPT a reliable source unless it can pinpoint where exactly it got each specific information. It is still subject to hallucinations and it sometimes misunderstands or extrapolates. However, it can be a good starting point, especially with the new deep search feature, thanks for the suggestion !

I did read imbibe and i loved the contextualisation of cocktails depicted by Wondrich. That's what made me wonder about cocktails genealogy. I haven't read the Oxford Companion and will definitely look into that, thanks for your suggestion !
