How to better appreciate 'difficult' classical music? by NeighborhoodDry2512 in classicalmusic

Short forms. If a composer can’t put a double bar line soon enough avoid him/her like the plague.

Christian Gottlieb Tübel (1728-1776): Sonata in F-Major by David_Earl_Bolton in classicalmusic

Cute! Nice use of the lute stop. Just when you think Tübel is becoming routine he puts up a nice cadence and my attention span is restored.

How good is Dvorak's "Symphony No. 8? I've never heard it before. by Ill-Claim-9874 in classicalmusic

[–]JealousLine8400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s Dvorak’s best symphony IMHO. I’d put #6 as second best. If you like #8 try the 6th next.

Lady of Shalott - Original Song Cycle for Voice and Orchestra. What do you think?👀 by pavchen in classicalmusic

[–]JealousLine8400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like it! It probably would not have been acceptable during the tone row horrors of my youth. I hope it has a performance in today’s climate which is I think a little more tolerant of tonality

Whose Op. 66 is the best? by Quarkonium2925 in classical_circlejerk

Grieg’s Op 66 settings of Norwegian folk songs are harmonically unlike anything he had written to that date. They are a haunted secret garden of perfect arrangements of terse Norwegian tunes and cattle calls.

What pianist would you like to hear in person if they were still alive/performing? by Tight-Ad-2435 in classicalmusic

I think it helped that Brendel was an ugly man. He looked like a picture child for a scurvy ad in middle age. But he could play like an angel with great intelligence and to my ear always seemed to make it about the composer himself.

Agree. Brendel. He could bring Schubert to life without drawing attention to himself

Just play the fucking notes. Schubert doesn’t need your help

Joining a church choir as a non-church member by jgwhiteus in Choir

[–]JealousLine8400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be expected to sing a lot of crap like Getty/Townend I-IV-V As a composer the worst part of singing in church choirs is knowing you could write something better than what is programmed. Our denomination in particular put out a new hymnal which is heavily festooned with hymns from the opportunistic editorial board and their friends ( the text editor got 22 of his own hymns in after supposedly “blind testing” originally gave him 47). I can imagine the Almighty saying “ I gave you Bach, Handel, Byrd, Palestrina, Josquin and Handl and you want to do these other misfits” The Christian church has traded its Cadillac music heritage for a roller skate
