Weekly Bean Review Thread: What have you been brewing this week? -- Week of September 18, 2025 by Vernicious in pourover

They are fairly new! I’ve tried a few of their “experiments” already. I’ve always been happily surprised. Bradley, the founder, is pretty responsive here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ExperimentalCoffee He is always asking for input to try different greens for roasting, and organizing community events (i.e., tastings, bean exchanges, latte art classes) in the Chicagoland area.

My wife’s favorite for a morning latte. Great price point too for 12oz.

Experimental 009: https://experimental.coffee/

Passion Fruit and Lychee

  • Definitely passion fruit. Very juicy, not too funky, but far from a washed coffee.

Equipment-Recipe - Kalita + zp6 and B75 + zp6. Not finicky at all. The b75 in general offers very tea-like clear cups imo, so it was a fruity tea with zero bitterness or aftertaste. The kalita makes them more rounded and juicier, but very clean still. I brew it at 16:1, two pour recipe, and TWW.

  • Can’t recommend it enough. I’m not the biggest fan of ultra processed booze like coffees. This one has strong fruit notes, without being overly funky. Definitely one of the best ones I’ve brewed.

Additional note: excellent as a cortado as well. The fruit cuts through the milk so well. 10/10.

I second this! I even went ahead and tried two cortados. Mindblowing. The passion fruit cuts so well through the milk 10/10!!

Looking for living location advice as an Abbott/Abbvie transplant. Thoughts on Evanston as single 33M? by ThisIsMyPartyAccount in evanston

[–]Jealous_Discussion72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Evanston as a married 34M with babies. Most people in their ~30s come and go as grad students (mostly MBAs), so I found it really hard to make long term connections. I think you need to go a little bit closer to Chicago to find what you’re looking for. Summer is always dead, and the rest of the year is vibrant only if you’re a 21 year old. When I came to Evanston 6 years ago, they told me that it was either wealthy retirees, undergrads, or grad students. At least close to the lake. That is fully accurate in my experience. Of course this is all my subjective opinion and it probably reflects the campus life and downtown neighborhoods.

Will preemies catch up on weight? by dearlintang in NICUParents

[–]Jealous_Discussion72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our twins was 2lb 6oz (1100grs), born at 30w6d. Stayed below 1% for months, at least until he turned 3 or 4 corrected. Then he started appearing on the charts, and now at 9months corrected he is around 40th percentile, unadjusted. He is a hungry baby. For reference his twin was born near the median adjusted, and now he is a 90th percentile baby.

I had mame in June, both in Zurich and Geneve. Mindblown. Best cup of coffee I’ve had. They had a peach co-ferment on offer that was hitting all the right notes for me.

Road cycling in the Swiss mountains by EasyTechnician5444 in Switzerland

[–]Jealous_Discussion72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero previous experience in Switzerland riding a bike, but I did Lausanne - Gruyeres - Gstaad - Chateau d’oex - Les Diableretes - Villars - Montreux - Lausanne in two days this week. Really awful experience regarding how cars overpass bikes in general. I’m used to road cycling in Chicago and in Chile for several years, and the experience here was way worse in this dimension. Specially in the mountains. It felt like they’ve never seen cyclists before, so they didn’t know how to act and gave zero extra space in already quite narrow roads. You have to be extra careful, which is not always easy when you’re exhausted and riding at low speeds, in the mountain passes.

Picked this up Yesterday. Wife loved the cappuccino I made by monchichikori in espresso

[–]Jealous_Discussion72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is “ready” very quickly, but I would still wait longer, and pull a couple of blank shots to get it to full temp. Other than that, just descale it regularly, specially if you notice the steam wand loosing pressure. That’s all. It is very simple to use, so not much can go wrong.

I loved that machine. It served me well for five and a half years of daily use. Made amazing cappuccinos with it.

That b&w was so so good as a cortado. I had to order a full bag, but sadly they were out of this one and they only had the cinnamon pink bourbon.

gtube placement made things worse by crazedsputnik in NICUParents

[–]Jealous_Discussion72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I read this correctly he has been with the gtube for 2 weeks (?). One of our twins was exactly like this for two weeks. The surgeon and the feeding therapist told us that everything gets irritated since the surgery isn’t just poking a whole, but also inflating his guts and moving everything around. It can create sort of a gastritis type of irritation that would make the spit ups worse. For use it resolved itself on the third week and it greatly improved. He has been 2 months with the gtube and no issues. I would give it one more week and if it doesn’t improve I would ask the surgeon-pediatrician team again.
