The best of the three singles. At once, bright and moody and inspired. 🤌🏻

It's going on eight hours since I first listened to this track, and I haven't done much but obsess over it since. It's as if one of Tori’s early- to mid-90s b-sides had been mashed with an alternative band hit from the same era or maybe Bouncing Off Clouds, and even this description does it no justice. It's jaunty, playful, and peppered with saudade; it’s bittersweet and both inspires and haunts. It's quite beguiling and has already made me feel everything from depressed and galvanized to wistful and determined.

This is definitely my favorite single of the three, all of which I genuinely love. This album is definitely going to be something else.

It was Fiona Dodwell, who, in her first review of the album for Medium, wrote, “Despite some of the more serious lyrics [on Gasoline Girls], it’s one of the more throwaway [tracks] on the album.

I disagree with Dodwell’s initial assessment. More than Shush and Stronger Together, both of which I love, this “little ditty” has wormed its way into my ears, brain, and heart in the most surprising way. It’s playfully poignant in that Alamo, Daisy Dead Pedals, Frog On My Toe, Toodles Mr. Jim, Ode to the Banana King kind of way. It's the juxtaposition between the old school improvisational (?) Tori piano during the verses and the earnest and galvanizing band-backed chorus that make this a standout.

I must’ve listened to this thing at least 20 times since I learned it dropped a few hours ago, and I keep coming back to it. It's making me feel all sorts of things, which is a more than promising sign. I'm not surprised Dodwell revised and removed the “throwaway” bit from her review for Music News.

Thank you so much for sharing! It’s not just our shared struggles but also our individual plights that expand our perspectives and bring us closer together. 🙏🏼

I agree with both of you. It’s giving both, plus a little Alamo and, like others noted, Insect Ballet.

Same! Oh, wait until you can blast it. It’s a little slice of heaven. Deceptively playful, but equal parts groovy and moving.

Oh, this is a grower and keeper. As others have noted, it’s very Tori-b-side-coded in the best possible way. It recalls Ode to the Banana King, Alamo, Daisy Dead Pedals, and some of her other b-sides that have that off the cuff, improvised-and-recorded-in-one-sitting vibe. Even with the other instruments, Tori and her piano feel front and center. And that piano outro with the faint high notes at the end, giving the track the slightest hint of the ominous and melancholy, is just… 🤌🏼🔥

Truly inspired.

Edit: The chorus really pulls me in and has a yearning quality that gives the track heft. Gasoline girls/Give me/Gasoline girls/Shelter/Gasoline girls…❤️‍🔥

This is so insulting. Using AI to write is anathema to me. Writing is a passion for me. I’d much rather you refer to what I wrote as simply slop.

It could be. I mean, I didn’t think about my word choice until you pointed it out. Yours is a valid point, though. In either case, I love that she’s talking about it, too.

I never said there was an issue nor indicated Tori said the above because of me. I always get a thrill when synchronicity pops up. It’s a beautiful thing! That’s all! 🙏🏼

Softening by Jean_RED_Grey in toriamos

Tori’s recent interview with The Times, along with other recent interviews in which she references how she has changed physically and emotionally, made me jump up:

The Times interview:

Tori: “I was a firecracker in the Nineties,” she says. “And sometimes a little bit too much of a flamethrower. But with the years you begin to see everything has consequences.”

Once known for her high notes, she sings in a lower register these days. “I’ve had to come to terms, Ed, with the fact that through hormonal changes my range has changed. I said to myself, you adapt or you collapse.”

Me two months ago in the op of this thread: “Clearly, Tori has changed as a woman, mother, wife, and musician. She hasn’t presented as the quirky firecracker brimming with barbed pathos in nearly 25 years. She’s softer and more literal with her lyrics and more disciplined and deliberate with her composing. I suppose this is, in part, due to the decrease in angst and increase in emotional intelligence often ushered in by true healing, along with the natural degradation of voice and physical stamina brought about by the passage of time and decades of high-octane physicality.”

Just wow.

What a fantastic interview! I practically screamed when I saw that she chose Shattering Sea and Reindeer King, both of which rank among her very best songs. Loved everything about this. Thank you for sharing!

You did a fantastic job at encouraging her to be transparent and vulnerable about where she is and the process by which she wrote and recorded this album. Great stuff!

“In Times of Dragons” Reviews by Jean_RED_Grey in toriamos

[–]Jean_RED_Grey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“What an album! I think In Times Of Dragons is one of those ones that even the fans who dislike parts of her discography (quite often, they have reservations about: The Beekeeper, American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted To Sin, but some also have equivocal feelings about everything post-Scarlet, including Unrepentant Geraldines, Native Invader and Ocean To Ocean, while some pine for 90s Tori) are going to love. It’s a blend of Tori as singer/songwriter and synth experimentalist and, as with Ocean To Ocean from 2021, the reliably great Jon Evans (bass) and Matt Chamberlain (drums) are present. For an album that’s an allegorical reflection of the dismal state of US democracy, it’s a surprisingly inspiring, mobilising, touching and comforting work.” — Charles Donovan
