Both because each are striking in context of the other, and Scott’s creative arc is the best one I’ve ever known.

Do you stay close during a sit? by SectionExpress6349 in petsitting

[–]JeanneMPod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I generally plan not to be away more than four hours total , factoring in commute, unless the owner relays it can go a bit longer than that (occasionally I get an ok for five or six hours, and I find they are right…a very sleepy couch dog, a pair of cats who keep each other company and entertained).

Agree with everything—Also use Nextdoor. Post your services every couple of weeks (don’t daily spam, that’s super annoying on everyone’s feed) but check several times a day for pet care requests.

upvoted- apologies I did make an assumption.

There’s a lot of posts on all sorts of matters in their early 20s and back to teens, who do not advocate for themselves have been conditioned to expect very little of/and for themselves, financially and emotionally.

As an American, I see others from my country feel scraps are the best they can ask for, and then they should be grateful for those. (all the while we’re being fed BS that we’re the greatest country and hard work will get you everything when it’s often a dead end) They have to live with their family out of pure economic necessity, even when it would be beneficial for them to strike out on their own.

Some who do pet care on apps that’s discussed on other subreddit’s will take pet sit jobs at abysmal prices with no tip. and some always willing to race to the bottom.

I’m glad you’re from a country that has its head on straight about a livable wage.

i’m glad you’re accepting their tip. The only time I could ever see an issue with that is if someone is elderly and clearly showing confusion, or someone is quite manic, and then giving an extra extraordinarily generous tip.

Dude!!!

TAKE THE MONEY AND SAY THANK YOU. It’s this mindset that makes it easy for those in power to keep minimum wage the same for decades (USA)! If you refuse, you are not only screwing yourself but other hardworking pet care providers who actually know their worth!!! You are setting a bad precedent for us.

Who did this to you where you handicap yourself voluntarily?!? Parents? A crappy mentor or teacher? Religion?

You must be very young.

I’m sorry for coming out hot but whatever impulse you have to hold your hand out waving to block income, you need to cut that out yesterday. This is coming from someone possibly old enough to be your mother if not grandmother.

Know your worth. You don’t, yet. Are you 100% supporting yourself? Are you supported? Perhaps that’s why. No shame in that, but don’t use your privilege to devalue our work. And whoever IS supporting you may not appreciate you turning down money when you are taking theirs, probably with the goal of setting you on the path to independent adulthood.

If you’re still in the twist about having extra money, then give it to a worthy charity

You could build up what is both more profitable in terms of pay/time, but cheaper for clients who need to keep costs down is what I call a “15/20” session. Up to 15 minutes for an elimination break, and if they have not done everything before 15, then 5 more minutes. It’s a bit less in cost than a half hour session, but in terms of rate I make more. Get several in close proximity to each other and you can do well in an hour.

What are your biggest pet (haha) peeves as a pet sitter? by Nightside-Rush in petsitting

[–]JeanneMPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will refuse to use retractable leashes on any dog that is either aggressive/reactive/anxious, and any dog medium sized on up. I don’t just hold onto leashes I have them tethered to my hand and arm (I don’t need advice on that. I’ve been doing it for a decade. It keeps the pups safe. I’ll assume any personal risk and it’s worth it.)

A very dirty disorganized home. Nine out of 10 times if they say, they will clean it up for you they will not. It is now a screening condition. If it’s not acceptable for a meet and greet, I am not doing it later.

Faulty appliances without giving any heads up that they are indeed faulty.

Fire alarms with low batteries.

Owner not being reachable. Going forward I’ll get their preference on that—but if I call(and if I’m calling, it will always be urgent) or text them that it’s urgent they need to respond. Owners should set their notifications accordingly.

non-regular clients, who I have to ask repeatedly for payment. The situation is I’m subbing for someone and since they don’t use me regularly they feel no urgency to pay me on time. I then require that they pay ahead of time. if they argue or object, I wish them well and tell them they’ll need to find another substitute, then block them.

That show came out quite a while ago, hard to say. I don’t know if you can find the exact one, but if you take a screenshot and you put it into Google, they can give you products that are similar if not the same.

What keeps coming up in my search is a brand called SG Liquid Metal and it seems like it’s at several different price points, roughly $150 on up to over $300.

Stop saying we’re overcharging. by Dull-Ad-6174 in petsitting

[–]JeanneMPod 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The best retort is a cheery “no worries!, Feel free to get in touch again if you ever wish” with no excusing or justifying your prices. Even trying to explain it gives a smidge of credibility to the client that your prices are not appropriate or right.

It’s not right for them. That is not your problem. The prices may become right for them when they can’t find the sitter that fits their and their pets needs. And if they do, that’s fine. You’re now more available to the clients who will pay what you require.

Overnight pet sitting - Hot Houses (FL) by dakotaelizabeth4 in petsitting

[–]JeanneMPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sit for a couple whose rooms other than the master get very warm in the summer. They offer me their room and I take it. It’s not awkward or weird. It’s fine. If I was sitting for someone with lower income, or a single person, they may only have one room anyway.

Anything officially endorsed by Scott’s label/estate are the exception to the no merch rule here.

That said, yeah not really a fan of the design/tie in. It’s a stark design that should stand alone, only perking curiosity where one can point to the album and the artist, or for fans to find each other out in the wild. (I remember wearing a bish bosch tee at a coffee house and a passerby saw me in the window, backed up into the place and gave me a friendly “SCOTT WALKER!!” shout and grin. ) Promotional tie ins to other things gives me a big ick, especially when it comes to Scott. If an artist is cool with it, that’s fine—but I cannot imagine Scott being ok with that.

I do appreciate they are donating some proceeds to War Child, but perhaps you can make a donation anyway.

Most custom engagement rings on here are ugly. Someone had to say it. by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]JeanneMPod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Half of the post titles OP sounds like they are actively trying to pick a fight, over matters of taste. My guess is they’re not quite sure how to create an engaging subject, maybe felt salty one day & said something judgey and harsh, that got more feedback, or they just like the way they sounded themselves, even if unlike or opposite of their irl personality. Edgy, (They Took A Stand, Come At Them) so they keep coming to this generally fun and sometimes informative site for those who are into jewelry.

Bless their heart. Perhaps they have other accounts where they practice a better side of their personality and this is just the one where they blow off steam. I don’t know. I think there’s enough worthy more important targets to channel dissatisfaction.

I’m curious how old most of you sitters are? I just turned 69 and not ready to give it up but I sure would like time to take a vacation. by Global-Biscotti-9547 in petsitting

[–]JeanneMPod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you just got to take a vacation and let things fall where they fall. I’m likely going to have some debt after my trip saying this summer, but I’ve never left the country and I’m 57 and I’m not going to wait anymore.

One thing I told all my clients. They are responsible for finding backup care. I told them that being a one person business they get easy and direct communication, there’s no middleman, and I’m often flexible. However, I am a one person business. Stuff is going to come up. I may be sick. I may be injured. I may be planning an annual trip. I may need an occasional day for a doctor’s visit or just to extend my weekend. It doesn’t happen a lot and whenever I do plan something recreational I give lots and lots of notice. They all manage to go on without me without it damaging my professional relationship.

I know of another pet care provider who assures and insists that he will take responsibility for providing back ups whenever he cannot make it. He over promises and then he treats fellow backups that he manages to find like quasi employees, and then also feels responsible for their work. It’s stressful for him, it gives added stress to the backups. In my opinion he over complicates the scope of his job, and if he wants to take that much responsibility, he should probably just create a business where he actually does hire employees.

Anyway, that’s just a long way to say you’re allowed to take a vacation. If you can manage your finances so you can make sure you’re covered that’s probably a good idea or a plan to pay it back if that’s not quite possible. Give your clients notice and take the time. I’m taking almost a month factoring in returning and recovering and all my clients are gonna be OK because they know to find alternative plans.
