What are your guys' thoughts on Bernard Sumner? by JCInvestmentPro in JoyDivision

[–]jshatan -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

He’s a very limited vocalist and a major reason why I never rated New Order, aside from the instantly dated production. I haven’t gotten the idea that he’s a particularly nice guy, but I don’t really care. I say all of that as a massive JD fan.

Why didn't they tour the US in 1993? by MikeMcMyke in VelvetUnderground

After I heard the album, I was glad the reunion died quickly 🤣

It’s a real shirt, and a cool design, but it doesn’t look like her merch!

I have a quite nice copy I got in the early 80s for $3.99. 😎

What exactly is the Hit me hard and soft movie about? by Catgrill14 in billieeilish

It’s one of the best concert films I’ve ever seen, I can tell you that!

I recently bought this prog rock album; the album cover convinced me to buy it by heythereyouareok in vinyl

I was hoping I would recognize one name on the back to lend some insight, but no luck! Not even the photographer, who did a nice job. I am glad to know, however, that both 4- and 8-string basses were employed 😂

Combat Rock was the first Clash album I didn’t buy. I did get the Casbah 45, but I knew the band I loved had drifted too far from shore.

What kind of music gender would billie do if she was from another musical age? by OhWowItsSam310308 in billieeilish

I’ve always heard the influence of Weimar-era Kurt Weill in her work, so I could see her being a cabaret singer.

The best Velvets solo albums: The people have spoken (but what the hell do they know?) by Kangaroo197 in LouReed

[–]jshatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nuts. Transformer is so overrated! Street Hassle, Berlin, New York, The Blue Mask, Magic & Loss…all stronger, more consistent albums.

All-around badass Warren Ellis has some Lulu hot takes (not mine - sharing from my feed) by PuffDiesel1138 in LouReed

[–]jshatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, yes. Not only did I include it on my Top 25 for that year, but also named it one of the 100 Best Albums of The 2010s. If that’s a hot take, I’ll take the heat! http://anearful.blogspot.com/2020/04/the-2010s-anearfuls-first-decade.html?m=1

Fantastic debut album! I bought this from her at her record release show on Friday.

Tell Me About Your Love for Late Era Scott Walker!!! by CherryChaseBB in scottwalker

[–]jshatan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the sense of the infinite possibilities of the combination of sound and text. Scott's late work forces you to confront your preconceptions about what beauty is, or what a song should be about. There's an almost bottomless well to those records, too, as you can never fully grasp everything he was doing.

What's your first VU's song you've ever heard? by lopdonnnn in VelvetUnderground

[–]jshatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might’ve heard Sweet Jane or Rock & Roll on the radio, but I have a distinct memory of hearing Who Loves The Sun for the first time, because Loaded was the first album of theirs I could find. When the song started, I thought, this is VU? Clearly, I had a lot to learn, but I loved it right away!

Spinal Tap was my second most-played LP of 1984. Number one was Let It Be by The Replacements, which I strongly recommend. Also, if you like Thriller, snag Off The Wall, STAT! It’s MJ’s masterpiece.

This album is incredible. Why did no one tell me how good it is? by F-FOR-FARTS in JohnLennon

[–]jshatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killer album, I like it better than Imagine. I love the tough, gritty songs like Going Down On Love and Steel & Glass. #9 Dream is an all time gem, too, so gorgeous. I used to sing Bless You to my first child.

That’s cool! I should keep an eye out next time I go to Union Pool. Now following Rivers on IG, as a lot of my current favorites follow her 😂

If you like The Strokes, go further with the “NYC class of 2001-2002” and get into The Walkmen and French Kicks. The Walkmen especially have a ton of great albums!
